UBC start an evolution - Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health to Advance Cures for Brain Disorders

Philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian was one of those people affected by a brain disorder. He suffered a stroke, and although he fully recovered, was deeply affected by the experience. His ensuing $15 million donation to UBC's Faculty of Medicine will go directly toward the study of brain health. "The brain has been referred to as the last frontier of medicine," said Mowafaghian. "I hope that my gift will enable doctors and researchers to reach that frontier." Slated to open in 2013, the Centre for Brain Health will integrate brain research and patient care. "It will be the British Columbia headquarters for serious brain disease," says Dr. Cynader. "It will be a facility that brings together researchers, neurologists, psychiatrists and patients, who will come here for world-class help."

Dr. Max Cynader is Director of the Brain Research Centre, and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at Vancouver Coastal Health and The University of British Columbia (UBC).  In addition, he holds the Canada Research Chair in Brain Development at UBC and is Professor of Ophthalmology.  He is also a Member of the Order of Canada (CM), Member of the Order of British Columbia (OBC), Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada (FRSC), Fellow of The Canadian Academy for Health Sciences (FCAHS), and a Principal Investigator in Canada’s Network of Excellence in Stroke.

Dr. Cynader was born in Berlin, Germany in 1947 and obtained his B.Sc. at McGill University in 1967, and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972.  Following postdoctoral training at the Max Planck Institute, Dr. Cynader held positions at Dalhousie University in Halifax, and in 1979 was awarded the E.W.R. Steacie Fellowship of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council as one of Canada’s outstanding young scientists.  He attained the rank of Professor of Psychology in 1981 and Professor of Physiology in 1984, and held the position of Killam Research Professor from 1984 to 1988.  On arriving at UBC in 1988, Dr. Cynader headed the Ophthalmology Research Group at UBC until 1998, at which time he was appointed Founding Director of the Brain Research Centre.

In 1987, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2008, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.[6] In 2007, he was made a member of the Order of British Columbia.[7] In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.[8]

Dr. Max Cynader, Director of the Brain Research Centre at UBC and VCHRI and Prof. of UBCs Faculty of Medicine is one of five UBC members to receive the Order of Canada this year. He is honoured for his contributions to the field of biomedical research and for increasing the accessibility of treatments on the public market. The Order of Canada is the highest honour awarded to Canadian citizens for a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

UBC scientist studies how brain can recover
