No tricks. No filters. Just amazing settings and amazing lighting! This is a Carob tree. They are all over Cyprus and used to be known as 'the black gold' if the island. Legend has it that they were the main source of food for St. John the Baptist and to this day they are sometimes called St. John’s Bread. In early times the carob was a popular food both for man and beast. The small dark brown pods inside are identical in weight and were used by merchants in olden times to weigh gold. The word “carat” is actually derived from the Greek word (Kεράτιον), which was used to refer to the carob pod. They grow in soil no food for anything else and provide good shade but apparently not for humans. It is said that sleeping under a carob tree will give you bad dreams! The locals don't use them too much anymore and they are often collected for the local donkey sanctuary as donkeys LOVE them! They do still make carob honey, koulourakia (little sweet rolls smothered in the honey) and even chocolate substitute!! This is something the rest of the world are now also cottoning on to. Its also used in pharmaceuticals and is around 6 euro per kg meaning is actually more in the price range of nuts. #carobtree #carob #carobhoney #carobchocolate #cyprusheritage #cyprushistory #thingstodoincyprus #souskiouvillage #lovecyprus (at Souskiou) https://www.instagram.com/p/COql24xltIa/?igshid=1r662fw7095ep
