If you havnt heard, theres a GENERAL ELECTION due to occur THIS MONTH on the 29th, you must be regestered to vote prior to the 12th (as far as i know) in order to vote. As we have seen in the US, letting growing far right movements fester without pushback doesnt end up well for the people of that country, but also as we have seen in france and the UK, we dont need to act as if the right wing is unbeatable when it is. Due to this, and to get rid of this horrible government and shut the door in the faces of any government that might shift even further right, VOTE LEFT AND TRANSFER LEFT! And check the register! Also sharing this post would be useful too! Theres a guide below from the Locals and EU election, but still relevant now!

...increasingly impossible to defend. On Thursday, the Dáil debated the Sanctions against the State of Israel Bill 20251, and there will be a vote of TDs on the Bill next Wednesday, 20 May. My Bill is the first time a proposal of full economic sanctions on the state of Israel itself has come before the Dáil, proposing to prohibit all trade, investment, financial dealings and state-linked economic activity with the entire Israeli regime. Previous sanctions bills proposed in the Dáil have focused on trade and investment in the occupied territories. For the past two and a half years, the world has watched the Israeli state inflict a genocidal massacre in Gaza, slaughtering more than 70,000 people, most of whom are women and children, and displacing almost the entire population of more than two million people. The Israeli military has destroyed 90% of housing in Gaza and devastated most of the civilian infrastructure, schools, colleges, hospitals, water and power plants, creating an almost indescribable humanitarian catastrophe. Israeli political and military leaders have openly incited the horror visited on Gaza, a fact that contributed to the decision of the International Court of Justice to rule, as early as January 2024, that there was a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza.

politics guy!! would you be able to explain what the hell happened in the Dáil today?

I've been stuck in bed with flu, binge-watching Criminal Minds all day and I somehow missed the entire thing

Of course! Also W criminal minds. I had to attend a debate yesterday, so I’m not massively read up on the whole thing, but there’s what I understand:

a group of independent TDs took part in government formation, and about four of these TDs were not given junior ministerial roles. As a result, they want to continue sitting on the opposition bench, and to facilitate this, formed a technical group that would grant them opposition speaking rights.

supporting the independent TDs are:

-The Independent TDs and Reigonal Independant Group

-Fianna Fáil

-Fine Gael

Against the independent TDs are:

-a United opposition including

~Ivana Bacik (LAB)

~Richard Boyd Barrett (PBP)

~Mary Lou McDonald (SHINN)

~Cían ‘O Callaghan, assumably speaking on behalf of party leader Holly Cairns, who I believe is on maternity leave. (SocDem)

Those in abstention of opinion are:

-Verona Murphy

-Peadar Tobín (ew)

-Myself

Due to the unrest at the Independents attempt to maintain valuable opposition speaking time despite supporting the government the Dáil had to be suspended multiple times, and was unable to elect Micheal Martin as Taoiseach as previously planned due to the interference.

I personally have no opinion in the matter. On one hand, regardless of whether an independent td supports the government, they should be allocated the typical amount of speaking time as long as they are not IN the government. I adored the given of the 32nd Dáil, however I do not believe that tarnishes my identity as a Labour or SocDems supporter. On the other hand, they participated in, and influenced government formation talks, and…sort of…are in the government, just without a position. Opposition speaking time is very precious and allows those who are not in government to criticise, oppose and question it…if they don’t have any intention to criticise them, then what’s the point?

Make of it what you will! Martin will probably be elected today.
