An elf I drew after my last D&D session. In the world we’re playing in elves are basically thought to be extinct, so encountering one who said she was at war with the stars was very interesting.

This was one of my first attempts at playing with more lighting

Spellfilchers

Since I mentioned them in my tags regarding this post here, @beebookmagic was curious about spellfilchers. Go wild with these funky mage/thieves!

I'll only be including things that I managed to find through my digging rather than any of my own guesses on how things operate within Toril and in-universe implications, but there's some fascinating stuff with spellfilchers. My sources, as well as page numbers, will be included as I mention them.

Spellfilchers are an elf-exclusive AD&D class from The Complete Book of Elves (pages 87-88) that's a mix of mage and rogue. They specialize in detecting magic, disarming magical traps, and theft, so their big niche is in heists and wizard-based dungeons (so places like Undermountain).

Spellfilchers seek out the magical secrets and treasures of non-elf mages (primarily wizards) and purloin them for the service and betterment of elvenkind. Understandably, non-elf mages inherently distrust any spellfilchers, should their profession be exposed. Elven mages hold no such distrust since they are among the benefactors of a spellfilcher's activities.

Due to the nature of their work, spellfilchers are diligent in disguising themselves to the point of ridding themselves of any identifying quirks, such as with their habits or appearance. This serves to not only prevent detection but also protect them from any mages who found their magics stolen by a spellfilcher and whatever revenge the irate mage seeks to inflict. Mages, however, are not the only ones seeking spellfilchers. Thief guilds also wish to recruit spellfilchers among their ranks, and, if they cannot recruit, then the thief guilds are more than happy to obtain a spellfilcher's secrets and stolen goods in other ways.

No person can simply decide to become a spellfilcher like other classes such as wizards or fighters. Instead, there is an entire process for selecting and training an individual for this path. A spellfilcher guild will test elven infants for magical sensitivity and, with the parents' permission, will take the infant to raise and train them to their lifelong role. From there on, the guild's rules must be followed strictly, for each member's loyalty is to the guild and its aims (with the understanding that the guild seeks the betterment of elves). While a spellfilcher can go off on adventures, they can only do so with the permission of the guildmaster.

(One factoid from The Elves of Evermeet, page 110, is that spellfilchers are very uncommon within Evermeet itself, as their activities keep them on Faerun. Can't steal from non-elf mages when you're on an island populated by only elves, I guess.)

One thing of note is that spellfilcher traditions are not exclusive to elves who live above ground--drow of the Underdark also have their own spellfilchers.

While I couldn't find any confirmation of spellfilchers in other locales (not that they don't exist but rather that they simply aren't mentioned), the Tower of the Masked Mage, a temple to Vhaeraun, acts in place of a guild for the drow spellfilchers within Sshamath. (Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark, pages 92-93 under "Temples".) Here, Vhaeraun acts as a divine patron to spellfilchers, more akin to a muse than how a god would be typically to a cleric. Presumably, the spellfilcher's role within the Tower of the Masked Mage is to bring magical secrets, techniques, items, and other such material to be studied and utilized by the various mages within the temple, all with the goal of furthering Vhaeraun's goals (which would be the betterment of drow through the destruction of Lolth's church).

(Something of note is that divine patronage is unique to drow spellfilchers, as there are no stated patrons to their surface cousins among the Seldarine. We can make a few guesses on who would be all for robbing those filthy humans of their magic, but there's nothing stated in the text.)
