Delta Anon here with another little question, as recently my area got hit with a big ass rainstorm and it got me thinking as usual.
Do we think Beta would have a phobia of rain/thunder?
I looked it up and from pretty much everywhere I've seen, the Philippines get hit with typhoons very badly, with two deadly typhoons ("Yolanda/Haiyan" and "Pablo/Bopha") somehow lining up with the actual Undertale plotline of 20XX, along with other typhoons that either fell out of line with the 20XX plotline, or were less damaging than the two I already mentioned.
Anyways, I bring this up to say that depending on when Beta was alive during all this, he could have possibly lived through one of these typhoons or have been young enough to hear the horror stories they left behind. He may have grown up being taught to fear the water he and his friends or siblings swam in.
And depending on his parent's jobs, he could have also possibly learned how to perform life-saving measures in case of drowning or going under the water for too long, whether it be for a typhoons or to protect other kids in the bodies of water they swam in.
(Personally, I like to think his mom might have been a nurse, or at least he had a few aunties who were nurses, so they would've been able to teach him some things. Along with Color being interested in medical things as well, Beta would probably request lessons from him - and it might even help him remember those bits of his past.)
And actually now that I think about it this could make a lot more sense in regards to his backstory. What if the way he found out about Mt. Ebbot was him seeking shelter under one of its smaller caves - one that would be more towards the forest ground rather than up in the mountain - during a heavy spout of rain?
I'd imagine he ended up in that position due to him playing in or near the woods (if he was allowed to), but due to the heavy rain it wasn't safe to head back to his home. So he sought shelter in whatever dry area he could find that looked safe, stable, and without an animal already living in it. And once he found shelter in one of Mt. Ebbot's caves, he's been fascinated ever since. Which would of course give detail as to why he wanted to prove himself by climbing it fully, and thus falling into the Underground.
And if he had siblings, maybe he dragged them into the cave with him. I can imagine Beta being a very good older brother, but also a younger brother as well (maybe he was the middle child? Idk). So if his siblings and him were out playing, he most likely would have brought them to the cave with him. And they got to see his curiosity and fascination with the cave spark.
(Seperate little headcanon here - I think that there are multiple Mt. Ebbots around the world that connects the Monsters all Underground. If it was a war between Humans and Monsters, then surely it would have been world-wide. The Monsters would have had to seek shelter somewhere. It would make sense if there would be multiple Mt. Ebbots to connect them all to one place, one shared Underground, no?)
Of course, once he fell into Mt. Ebbot later on, he would probably be very wary of Waterfall. Does it act the same way the typhoons at home did? Is it capable of creating a typhoon in the first place? What would happen if it was, where would he hide?
But now that he's with Delta in the Omega Timeline, depending on how much he remembers, do we think it would still affect him? Cause it could be a fully subconcious thing, even if he doesn't remember why he fears the sound of rain.
Assuming the Omega Timeline has non-dangerous weather (but weather nonetheless), the minute he hears rain or thunder, his fight-or-flight kicks in full gear. He doesn't know why he starts having flashbacks and panic attacks during storms, or why he remembers calling out certain names of people he no longer recognizes, or why he craves to find safety in dark, dry places during them.
It might impact how he functions as Delta, too - if they're on a mission somewhere protecting someone and rain starts up, their first instinct might be to grab whoever they're protecting and hide with them somewhere safe, including teammates.
Or if they're in a fight and a storm is brewing, they might get a sudden urge to run from the rain, unsure if it'd be safe to risk continuing the fight - which could also inspire an idea to leave the enemy to the storm and hope the rain takes care of the problem for them.
(And since he already doesn't like fireworks, depending on the reasoning, I can see him honestly disliking the storms more than the fireworks. The loud noises rival each other, but the potential trauma from typhoons would make the storms arguably worse.)
Anyways, now that he's with Delta, Color, and Epic, I can see their first interaction with a storm in the Omega Timeline (again, if it has weather) definetly exposing that fear.
The first time he probably experienced a rain storm was when he was alone with Delta, I'd assume. Depending on when it happened, it either threw Sans entirely or he could've had a bit of time to understand some of Beta's fears and how to help (if he had learned a bit about Beta's past prior to this).
Regardless, it still probably startled and confused Sans/Delta why Beta all the sudden started having flashbacks when he heard the thunder roll and the rain start. Beta would probably run to a safe place (and drag Sans with him), away from windows but padded to protect himself from debris - such as under the bed or inside a closet/cabinet. It took quite a while during and after the storm to convince Beta it was safe.
Along with that, the first time it happened with Color and Epic, it might've unfortunately happened outside. They were on an outing, and before they knew it, they got caught in the rain. Now, obviously, Delta doesn't feel comfortable showing any signs of fear outside of his home (hell, he doesnt even like showing it there), so I think the panic would be more internal. Especially if Beta was really freaking out about it, and Sans is trying to calm him down so he doesn't show too much panic (he knows his kid doesn't like seeming scared in front of anyone, even their friends).
But if the storm was really getting bad, I can see their friends starting to recognize their nervous tics - pacing, fidgeting, constantly checking outside and/or the weather app, scanning for exits and safe places to hide. Maybe even trying to drag Color and Epic with them to safety inside a store or library.
Obviously, as we all know, they would clock that shit immediately. They'd recognize that Beta is taking some control, but they'd also see that something clearly isn't right. I'd imagine they let Delta lead them to wherever they feel necessary to go - they know better than to try to stop him from protecting them. But once they make sure Delta has relaxed a bit, they ask him about it.
He'd deny it, naturally. What are you talking about, seeming nervous? Who would fear a little bit of rain and thunder? (Why would they admit to it in public?)
Yeah, that facade lasts until the lights start flickering. And if the storm is bad enough, maybe the lights go out completely for a few minutes.
But don't worry! Everyone nearby can see. Because unfortunately, that scared Delta/Beta so badly that they're glowing now. Lights suddenly going out during a bad storm is never a good sign.
Of course, Color and Epic would take them somewhere more private immediately for questioning and comfort. By this point, Beta's mostly taken over and the kid is definetly having a panic attack - Sans, however, is trying to regain control to help calm him down. Which only makes the outward panic worse, especially if they're both talking out loud to each other, trying to reassure themselves of reality whilst having no fucking clue what's going on anymore.
I feel like during this kind of moment, Color and Epic would back off a bit and let them sort it out. They'd be there to provide comfort, of course - if a loud roll of thunder passes by and Beta suddenly reaches out ("I'm not scared, I'm just- trying to protect you!") or if Sans is trying to ask for something to soothe the kid ("Hey, listen, we need to breathe right now. There's a blanket in that corner, it's soft, do you want a blanket?"), they would help. And if Zorox was there with them, then obviously he'd do his job in comforting and grounding them in reality.
I'd imagine it'd take quite a while to get them to calm down. Maybe the lights have come back on by this point, and Beta relaxes a bit when they do. He might take lights coming back on as a sign of safety - surviving the storm.
They'd probably go home after that, once the rain stopped. They'd probably focus on calming them down the rest of the day, especially Beta.
(And sorry if I yapped too much, this one got me excited to think and write about it 😅)
One thing I learned while doing brief research into the Philippines and Filipino culture (and i still plan to do more, definitely), is that multi generational homes are not uncommon, even if that often means an overcrowded home environment.
So even if Beta had been the oldest of his siblings, or the baby of his siblings, he could still very well have the experience of a “middle child” because he, his siblings, and his parents could share a very close living space if not a connected big house with their cousins, including Beta’s grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.
I also definitely do think Beta has nurses, doctors, and people in the medical profession in his family—especially his mom. In the same vein, I also wouldn’t be surprised if other members of his family were involved in their local church/religious community, such as nuns, priests, preachers, etc.
I also really like the idea that Color having a very clear and passionate interest in the medical field could also be one reason why Beta was drawn to him—but also, i wouldn’t be surprised if the kid subconsciously always expected Color to leave and go far distances eventually, as his mother did in his life.
(And would also explain why he felt so intensely about Color eventually moving out of the apartment he shared with Beta and Delta, because Beta is subconsciously reacting to previous abandonment trauma and dealing with emotional flashbacks. The body keeps the score and all.)
With the context of how the weather is in the Philippines, and the two previous big typhoons matching up, I do think it’d be reasonable for a child to both know how to avoid, survive, and recognize the signs of an approaching or developing typhoon.
Especially if Beta was caught in one while alive, or perhaps his family faced a loss—either someone Beta knew personally, or just someone who passed before Beta was born but he grew up constantly hearing about this loss family member. And the grief and trauma of family loss, if not the loss of a home and community, shaped the family environment the child was born into.
I really like the way you tied in Beta’s adventurous nature and the reality of typhoons into how he first discovered a Mt. Ebbott and how it developed into his later fascination and desire to prove himself but climbing and exploring the whole thing.
Especially the thing about multiple Mt. Ebbotts (even if the mountains may be given their own different names in the UltraTale/Vitaltale AU depending on where they’re situated, and what types of people, cultures, civilizations build, rise, and fall around them.)
Also I think it’d be interesting that—if we go with the idea that the orange/bravery soul was locked in the jar for many years to the point it kinda loss or came out of it with absolutely no memory or sense of identity or self at first, only to eventually run into situations, people, names, aus, that bring up confusing emotions or murky, muddy flashes of memory where the child can’t make out clear details or map out a timeline of their life before the jar— that a part of Beta’s character will be at first starting to recognize that there is a self at all outside of bravery.
Then there will be both an arc of trying to build a self, while also recovering and discovering a self that is distinctly “before.” There can be murky details of the past to build a baseline for this character, but also the present and the future are unclear—so there’s plenty of opportunities to write and explore the bravery soul down many different paths.
If the bravery soul starts to develop a differentiated sense of self from Sans, or not. If the soul wants to uncover the past so badly, or if it’s attempting to live in the now while the past keeps intruding on its new life, its second chance.
If the soul may even want to reject regaining a sense of self separate from bravery or Delta at all, between itself and Sans, perhaps because it feels easier, safer, or maybe just what it likes best. That it’s okay with just being Delta, or the bravery soul, and not exploring who the child was before or trying to figure out who he is now.
