Like many engineers, Mal had a habit of getting lost in his work from time to time. It was probably unfortunate that the apocalypse hadn’t stopped that habit. With zombies running around, being easily distracted by a project went from being a mild inconvenience to being downright dangerous, and though he tried to keep his head on straight, it was far easier said than done. Attempting to rework their generator to have greater fuel efficiency was an easy task in theory, but Mal found himself lost in his own head all the same. He mumbled quietly as he worked, talking out his thoughts in order to put them straight.
He didn’t hear anyone approaching until they were close, a branch breaking under their foot. Tensing, he reached for his screwdriver, gripping it tightly and preparing to use it as a weapon if need be. Fortunately, it wasn’t necessary. Recognizing Reese, he relaxed instantly, putting the tool down and sitting up. He wiped his hands against his jeans as he stood, offering her a smile. “Afternoon,” he greeted with a nod. “Nice day for the end of the world and all, isn’t it? What are you up to?”
