#DailyDevotion If We're Going To Make It, The LORD Is Going To Have To Get Us There
#DailyDevotion If We're Going To Make It, The LORD Is Going To Have To Get Us There Psalm 119 169Let my loud cry come before You, O LORD; give me understanding as You promised (dabar). 170Let my plea come before You; rescue me as You promised (imrah). 171My lips will pour out praise because You teach me Your laws (choq). 172My tongue will sing about Your word (imrah) because all Your commandments (mitsvah) are righteous. 173May Your hand be ready to help me because I have chosen the way You want me to live (piqqud). 174I long for You to save me, O LORD, and delight in Your teaching (teaching). 175Give me a new life, and I'll praise You, and help me by Your righteous action (mishpat). 176If I wander away like a lost sheep, search for Your servant because I never forget Your commandments (mitsvah). We can make statements like the psalmist in verse 169 because Jesus promised us the Father knows what we need before we ask Him. When he prays, "give me understanding as You promised," it makes me think perhaps Solomon wrote this, as the LORD promised to give him understanding when he asked for it. In verse 130 he had written, "Your word is a door that lets in light and helps the simple person understand." James writes in ch. 1, "5If you lack wisdom, ask God, Who gives to everyone with an open hand and doesn't scold, and He will give it to you." That the LORD would hear his plea is repeated in the next verse. His plea is not only for understanding but also for deliverance (most likely from enemies). Again we have in parallel fashion "dabar" and "imrah." The next two verses are also in pararrel fashion. "My lips pour out praise," and "My tongue will sing," set up the teaching of the LORD's law and commandments. It is praise-worthy the LORD would deign to teach us His ways and reveal to us His righteous commands. We are very blessed to receive His words. It is good to remind ourselves His commandments are righteous. They go against the way of the world which calls evil good and good evil. 173 and 174 are also in parallel fashion to one another. The first halves are seeking the LORD's help and salvation. The second halves give the reason for it. He has chosen the way of the LORD's piqqud and delights in all His teaching. Certainly, as those who have been given birth from above can now choose to live according to the way of the LORD. Why would we do anything else (we certainly fight against the flesh which strives against His ways and sometimes we do fail)? Our new circumcised hearts, circumcised not by human hands, delight in the LORD's word and ways. It wants to keep inviolate the teaching of the LORD Jesus Christ and to do it. If we are going to live a new life in the LORD, He's going to have to be the One who does it. Paul writes in Gal. 2, " 20I was crucified with Christ, and I don't live anymore, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in my body I live by believing in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me." In Phil. 2 he writes, "13...it is God Who continues to work in you, both to desire as well as to do what is pleasing to Him." We join the psalmist in asking the LORD to help us to praise Him with our lives to help us by His righteous actions. The last verse may seem contradictory. How can we have gone astray and have remembered His commandments? John reminds us in chapter 5 of his first epistle while all wrongdoing is sin, not all sin leads to death. As God's holy people who struggle against sin, Paul tells us about that struggle in chapter seven of Romans. In his heart and spirit he wants to do what is right but his flesh is sold as a slave to sin so he does what he hates. We do not become apostate from our daily sins, when we confess them and turn from them to Christ. They could lead to death if we excuse rather than confess them. So Peter, who out of fear, denies he knows Jesus, while going astray, has not become an apostate like Judas, who has rejected Jesus. Good Shepherd come and get us. LORD Jesus Christ, when we stray be our Good Shepherd and retrieve us. Live in and through us so we may live lives pleasing to You and the Father. In Your name we pray. Amen. Read the full article
#DailyDevotion The LORD Jesus Gives Us New Life Through His Judgment
#DailyDevotion The LORD Jesus Gives Us New Life Through His Judgment Psalm 119 153See what I suffer, and rescue me for I never forget Your teaching (torah). 154Take my side in this conflict and free me; give me a new life as You promised (imrah). 155The wicked are far from being saved because they don't study Your laws (mishpat). 156Your mercies are great, O LORD; according to Your justice (mishpat) give me a new life. 157Many pursue me and oppress me, but I don't turn away from the truths (edah) You wrote. 158I'm disgusted to see those who are unfaithful, because they haven't followed Your word (imrah). 159See how I love Your guiding principles (piqqud). In Your kindness, O LORD, give me a new life. 160Your whole word (dabar) is true, and all Your righteous decrees are everlasting. So there does seem to be a conflict going on with the psalmist. His enemies are causing him to suffer. He seeks to be rescued because he does not forget the LORD's teachings. He reminds the LORD to see what he is suffering and to rescue Him. He asks the LORD to plead his case and free him. He asks the LORD to be his redeemer. So Jesus is our Advocate before the father. He shuts the mouths of the wicked who accuse us. He puts forth His blood as our justification before the Father. These people causing him trouble and possibly seeking his life are far from being saved for they don't study the LORD's mishpat. If they did study them, believed them and practiced them, they wouldn't be causing this great grief. This rescue entails Him giving him a new life as the LORD has promised. This new life is repeated in verses 156, 159 as well as being referred to in the previous section. This new life is based on His promise, His justice, and His kindness. In the Old Testament this is often seen as the LORD given man a circumcised heart. For us, we see this as Jesus giving us His Holy Spirit and new birth from above. This eternal life is given us when we believe Jesus, who He is, what He has done for us, and what He has taught us. Indeed, it is a great kindness the LORD bestows His grace on us that we receive the gift of faith which justifies us and gives us eternal life, now and into eternity. The LORD's mercies are great. It is His name, His character revealed to us in Ex. 34:6. This is also demonstrated in His kindness. It's important that we see these because so often when we meditate or think about God's laws and His judgment against evil, we can only see ourselves condemned by our own behavior and thoughts. So when our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts. We look to his mercies and kindness in Christ Jesus and are renewed in faith and hope. Those who the psalmist are disgusted by are not the pagans. They don't know God's word. It is those who have heard and know the word of God and are unfaithful towards it. They have been given the precious teachings of our LORD and decide like Adam that they know better. They don't trust the LORD Jesus or believe Him. We, though, love all the LORD has revealed to us in both the Old and New Testaments. We love not only the red letters of the Gospels but every word of God whether through Jesus, the prophets, or His Apostles. It is the voice of the One who loves us, redeems us, saves us, and who wants to dwell with and in us as His holy temple. His word is from everlasting to everlasting. We can always depend upon it, trust it, and let it guide every aspect of our lives. Merciful and kind Father, continually reveal You will to us through all forms of Your word, that we might have new life and so we may rejoice in it. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. #DailyDevotion The Words Of The LORD Open His Ways To Us
#DailyDevotion The Words Of The LORD Open His Ways To Us Psalm 119 129The truths (edah) You wrote are wonderful; that's why I keep them. 130Your word (dabar) is a door that lets in light and helps the simple person understand. 131I open my mouth wide and pant. as I long for Your commandments (mitsvah). 132Turn to me and be merciful to me as is right (misphat) for those who love Your name. 133Make my steps firm by Your word (imrah), and don't let wrong have control over me. 134Free me from the oppression of men, and I will follow the way You want me to live (piqqud). 135Let Your face shine on Your servant, and teach me Your laws (choq). 136Tears stream down from my eyes because others don't follow Your teaching (torah). The first three verses here seem to form some sort of unit. We start off with the written truths i.e. the covenant stipulations. They are wonderful to the psalmist which is why he keeps them. Wonderful, this is the same word the LORD tells Sarah when she laughed, "Is anything too wonderful for the LORD?" As Christians, we have a New Covenant, Christ Jesus' body and blood given and shed for us for the forgiveness of sins. In this covenant the LORD calls us His People and He calls Himself our God. He forgives our sins and remembers them no more. He places His teachings in our hearts so no one need teach us, "Know the LORD!" Our part in this is to eat, drink and remember what the LORD has done for us. Wonderful indeed are His truths. His word is a door that lets in light to help the simple person understand, Jesus says in John 10, "7...I tell you the truth, I am the Door for the sheep... 9I am the Door. If anyone comes in through Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.10 ...I came so that they will have life and have it overflowing in them." Jesus is the Word of God and He is the Door of God. He is the Light of God who gives understanding even to the simple. If we trust Him and do what He teaches, anyone can gain understanding thereby from the Almighty. The light that comes from Him gives us eternal life. The psalmist longs for the LORD's commandments. His mouth is open wide and panting. I'm trying to envision this. The best I can come up with is you see a person who is drop dead gorgeous and your mouth just opens and you are locked in on them. So should we be when we read the will of our LORD for us in the Scriptures. The ESV translates vs. 132 as "as is your way.” Our translation has “as is right.” It's an interesting translation for mishpat. It is used as an attribute here. It's been used that way before. So the LORD's is misphat and that mishpat is to be turning and being merciful to those who love His name. Of course if you hate His name, then you won't be able to see that. It will appear to you He is turning away or towards you in anger. But it is His will to turn to you and be merciful to you. We want the LORD's word to make our steps firm so we do not let evil rule over us. If we serve sin, it will be our master. In modern parlance, one addiction leads to the next and worse and worse levels of those addictions (sins). Jesus' word can free us from those addictions and keep us from going back to them if we continue in His promises, who He is to us and what He has done for us. In similar fashion, we are freed from the oppression of men when the life of the LORD is most important to us. It doesn't mean they won't make life difficult, but we don't have to do as they say. The LORD's face is gracious to us as He teaches us how to live our lives under Him. It should sadden us when we see others don't follow His teachings, particularly those who were raised in them. Our prayer should be for their return to His rest. Heavenly Father, grant that we may always have Your light. May we in our love for You see Your gracious turning to us with mercy. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Read the full article
#DailyDevotion Only The LORD's Promises Keep & Strengthen Us
#DailyDevotion Only The LORD's Promises Keep & Strengthen Us Psalm 119 113I hate two-faced people, but I love Your teaching (torah). 114You are my Hiding Place and my Shield —I wait for Your promise (dabar). 115Go away from me, wicked men – I want to do what my God orders (mitsvah). 116Help me as You promised (imrah) so that I may live, and don't let me be disappointed in my hope. 117Strengthen me so I may be saved, and I will always respect Your laws (choq). 118You reject all who leave Your laws (edah) to go wrong with a lie they deceive themselves. 119You get rid of all the wicked on earth like dross, but I love the truths (edah) You wrote. 120My flesh shudders in fear of You; I stand in awe of Your judgments (misphat). Two-face, some translations are half-hearted or double-minded. Such are people who say they worship the LORD but they really put their trust in other things or people for every good. Hate is a pretty strong word. Are we supposed to hate? St. Paul tells us to stay away from people who call themselves Christians but who live unrepentant lives. We can't avoid unbelievers though without leaving the world. (1 Cor. 5:11ff, Rom. 16:17) We on the other hand should love the LORD's teaching. We see His teachings in the Gospels and the letters of the Apostles. The LORD Jesus Christ is our Hiding Place and Shield. We turn to Him from protection against all evil thoughts and actions. We are called to wait for His promise. Peter tells us in his second epistle, "4Thus He has given us His precious and very great promises, so that after you have escaped the corruption that lust brought into the world, you might by these promises share in the divine nature." Bad company corrupts good character so it is right for the psalmist to expel wicked men from his midst. It's tough enough dealing with our own flesh in wanting to do what God had commanded us. We don't need to hang around false Christians who tempt us into do evil. A promise we can look to is from Isaiah 45, "22Turn to Me to be saved, all you most distant parts of the world, because I am God, and there is no other." We need to remind the LORD of His promises not because He forgets but because we do. Sometimes it seems long in coming but He will and does fulfill all His promises. His petition to be strengthened so he may be saved reminds us that we need to continually be strengthened by the LORD to remain faithful and be saved. He has given baptism, the Supper, absolution and the preaching and teaching of His Word to keep His promise of preserving us in the faith unto life everlasting. By His strengthening we keep all that He tells us. Verses 118 and 119 should be terrifying to those who pick and choose what parts of God's Word they are going to keep and not keep. True, many of the particulars of the Mosaic Law are no longer in force. They were for Israel as a nation state. Jesus has fulfilled it all for us. Yet, there remains in the New Testament His moral law which we keep by the Gospel. We should not dismiss the holiness Jesus has called us to through His holy apostles. We should not be like those who abuse God's grace in Christ Jesus in order to sin. They will not remain with the LORD. He will get rid of them all in the Lake of Fire on the Last Day. We love all truths the LORD has given us through the apostles and prophets. Our flesh should indeed shudder at the LORD's commands. It never keeps them. It will be purified by fire and a new glorified body will be given us at the resurrection. We indeed should stand in awe of all the LORD has given us. In them we find the power, wisdom, might, grace, mercy and peace of the LORD our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Merciful Father, grant us Your grace through Word and Sacrament to uphold all You have given us so we may shun those who reject Your teaching but call themselves Your people and live according to Your will. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Read the full article
