he remembers the day very well when he found out that he was going to be a dad. just as it was yesterday he remembers it. his ex, sarah, showed him the positive test as he sat on his couch. she was adamant about keeping the baby whether he wanted it or not.
his relationship with sarah was not toxic. it was just best that they parted ways. she wanted a partner who would stick around for the long haul, and nate was not that. he wasn't ready for a long term thing. but now he was stuck with her.
at first, nate was hesitant. nate didn't know if he was ready for fatherhood, but he was in this boat whether he liked it or not. he knew that no matter what he wasn't going to be an absent father, he's heard stories from friends about what it was like growing up without a dad and now that he was going to have a child, he wasn't going to let that happen. but still, he wasn't sure about how he was going to do as a dad.
he went to the doctor appointments, went baby item shopping, set up the cribs. he did all the right things. he kept a sonogram picture in his wallet to look at whenever he was nervous. he framed another one on his sink so that it would be one of the first things he looked at every day.
when he saw the first ever sonogram picture where it wasn't the outline of the baby, he got to see what his daughter looked like. and he got teary eyed, his child looked like him. even as a preborn little human, they looked alike.
and when he found out that he was having a girl, he swore that he was going to cry. there wasn't a big gender reveal party, it was just told to the both of them in the patients room. a girl. a girl that already looks like him. he drove sarah home and the whole way she was gleaming, hands on her belly as she was so excited to be a girl mom. nate didn't say much. he waited until he left sarah's house to scream cuss words and slam his steering wheel.
not out of anger. out of fear. fear of everything fatherhood had to offer. he kept thinking that he wasn't ready, that he wasn't meant to be a father. especially to a girl. he called his dad and vented to him, he called some close friends and seeked comfort. he wasn't ready to be a dad, but the due date was growing closer and closer. week by week his baby girl was growing and ready to come out. he was going to be a dad whether he was ready or not.
the day came- a calm spring morning was when nate got the call from sarah's mother (who wasn't ever too fond of nate but put up with him because he was the father of her grandchild). making the call to coach saying he was off duty for the day, it was time.
it was time and all his fear went away when he held her in his arms. when the nurses called him over to cut the cord, to wrap her in a blanket and hold her all the fear went away. he felt warmth wash over his body, a sense of calmness and peach flowing through his veins.
until this point they had been going back and forth between names. nate wasn't too picky, he just wanted something simple. something easy to spell and easy to say. nothing with an x or a gh in it was his only condition. but when she was here it was like the name was obvious: penelope. and sarah was okay with using nate's last name. she doesn't want to say it to his face, but she's still a little in love with him.
an arrangement was made that even though nate would have a room/nursery for penelope (that sarah decorated because she knew that the only decorating he would do is just a simple LED lights, a wooden chest with clothes, diapers, and other baby necessities, and maybe a mirror), she would be with sarah most of the time until she was at the toddler stage. but of course, nate would be there as much as possible, even spending the nights on occasion when sarah needed some extra help.
nate's entire perspective flips. where he was scared, now he was happy. where he was anxious, he was now full of love. nate grimaces when he thinks about how he was when sarah was pregnant with penelope. he hates that he was hesitant and held back, that he didn't think he was going to be a good father. and boy, he was dead wrong.
for the rest of the season and into their playoff stretch, nathan called her his lucky penny. even though they didn't get to the stanley cup, he still played lights out. he had at least a point in each game he played in. he had steals and blocks and hits. he played hard because now he had another reason to play.
he was playing for his lucky penny. and that's what she is to him. she's his good luck charm. and sure, maybe she inherited his hard headedness when she was just a few weeks old, and as soon as she learned to talk she was saying sassy things to both her mom and dad right from the get go. and even though she gives nate absolute hell, more so than sarah, he still wouldn't trade her for anything.

-thank you for reading! i hope you enjoyed it. as always feedback and comments, etc., are always appreciated! i'm kinda on the fence about this one, idk, i'm kinda just using these hc's for a blueprint honestly lol.
“It’s been 2 hours and she’s not answering her phone. Blair and Serena can you go by Y/n’s place and see if she is there and I’ll stay here in case she shows up”, Nate says while pacing back and forth. It is silent for a moment well as silent as it could be at a party that your girlfriend planned to announce your relationship to the public and he planned on proposing. Well, that was until you didn’t show up. Could you have found out and is that the reason you aren’t here. There were a million thoughts running through his mind and he didn’t hear anything until Serena said, “Of course Nate don’t worry it’s Y/n she can take care of herself, she would be the one person to successfully take over the world”.
And with that Serena and Blair left the party and got in a limo to go to Y/n’s penthouse. “So what do you think happened? She probably got so overwhelmed with work and forgot the party was today”, Blair told Serena.
“B, she’s our friend….”
“And I’m not saying that she isn’t S she just needs to learn how to have fun and let loose sometimes”, Blair interrupted Serena to say.
When the limo pulled up to Y/n’s house Serena said, “Well whatever it is we are about to find out now”. As they were walking into the lobby they bumped into Y/n’s assistant Liz. Liz who always looked so youthful looked like she aged about a couple of years today. Now why Y/n could be a total bitch or as some called a monster Liz looked horrified and Liz could usually handle anything that Y/n threw at her so what was actually going on.
“Thank the heavens you guys are here”, Liz said full of relief.
“Where is Y/n and why isn’t she answering her phone? And don’t spin some crap about she didn’t see it because she always has her phone on her and there should be well over 200 missed calls and messages from all of us”, Blair shouted.
“She threw her phone and it’s broken”, Liz responded.
“Broken, what the actual hell is wrong with she wouldn’t just throw her phone her life is in that thing”, Serena told Liz.
“She is really not ok just please follow me and once you see it you will understand,” Liz said and they all started walking towards the elevator. Once they got on the elevator there was an eerie silence and Blair and Serena were both thinking of all the possibilities of what they would be walking in on but their thoughts couldn’t be further from the truth. The elevator finally reached Y/n’s floor and they got out and followed Liz. She led them to y/n’s bathroom which was weird. As they got closer they heard y/n’s voice yelling, “Liz did you finally get what I fucking asked for?”. “No but I think I got something better”, Liz responded as she opened the door and Serena and Blair couldn’t believe their eyes.
Y/n was alive she looked crazy but she was alive and in the middle of hundreds of positive pregnancy tests. Now they knew why you couldn’t be reached.
“Oh sweetie look at you Blair call Nate now”, Serena said as she came to hug you whilst stepping on the pregnancy test. You still couldn’t believe that they were here or that you were pregnant. Somehow Serena got you to your couch and could vaguely hear Blair on the phone “Get here now. End the party or just leave it. I really don’t care just get here NOW,” Blair yelled at the phone.
Next thing you knew Blair was in your face snapping and saying “can you hear me?”.
“Yes I am pregnant not deaf or blind Blair and I am still me,” you retorted.
“Well, you didn’t look like you in that bathroom floor 5 minutes ago” Blair snarked back.
“Fuck off”, you yelled.
“Hey y/n we are just trying to make sure you are ok.” Serena jumped in the conversation.
“Of course I am not ok. I am fucking pregnant this was not in my plan at all” you were yelling. Until you heard a familiar voice say “You’re pregnant”. You knew it waws Nate before you even turned around. All you could think was this is not how you wanted him to find out. Then all of a sudden you heard “Well I think this is my cue to go you have a good night Y/n” Liz said as she finally left after the long day.
“Nate this is not how I wanted you to find out. For once in my life, I don’t know what to say.”
“Y/n I love you and whatever decision you make I’ll be with you 100% of the way”.
“Decision? You think I have a decision? You think I have a choice? I can see headlines now Y/n L/n couldn’t even raise her own child but thinks she can run the country. This was supposed to be my year but how can I run for president or go on campaign trails with a baby?”
“Y/n you do realize you aren’t 35 right? Is anyone else hearing this or is it just me?”, Chuck blurted in. You didn’t even realize that he was here and you had to assume he came in with Nate. You’ve known you were pregnant for less than a day and you are already off of your game. You didn’t know who was in your house and you didn’t have any responses.
“I know that Charles and right now that is the least of my problems. You all know my plan governor then president but how is that supposed to happen with a child?”
“That’s your plan what about our plan? Chuck, Blair, and Serena, you guys can see yourselves out y/n and I need to talk alone”, Nate said with a seriousness in his voice.
So, they all left leaving Nate and you alone, and you had no idea what was going to come out of his mouth. You sat there waiting for words to come out of his mouth but they didn’t. He was just
typing away on his phone. “Pack a bag and let’s go” were the next words out of his mouth. You could tell that there was no use with arguing with him and the next two hours were a blur you were packing a bag and on his private plane and you had no idea where it was going.
to be continued…..
a/n this story will be moving pretty quickly the next chapter will probably pick up here and then fast forward 3 months later. also, let me know if you want to be in the tag list

can i ask for a breakdown of the kids and their personality because im lowkey lost.
yes! i would love to! under the cut are just the main ones that we talk about the most.
milo makar: sweetest boy anyone could ever imagine. is cale's twin, has the rosy cheeks, blue eyes, light ginger hair. fluxuates between momma's boy and daddy's boy, loves both equally. he is best friends with penelope mackinnon and her bold (to put it lightly) rubs off on him eventually. milo does end up turning into chaos but not in a bad way. he is a chatterbox, he will walk up to any stranger and just start a conversation. milo loves baseball and anything to do about it. yeah, it's cool that his dad plays hockey but it would be even cooler if he played baseball. just fyi. milo all in all is just a good, solid kid. he can make friends with anyone but isn't gonna ditch penny behind. milo does get in trouble at school sometimes, but it's never anything too serious. cale makes sure of that.
penelope mackinnon: there are not enough words to describe this child. she is a lot. she's dramatic, she's the kid who cries to get what she wants and she uses it to her advantage. she looks like her mom (mom, who's name is sarah, had penny with nate but they were never really a serious couple. they decided co parenting was the best option), but has nate's eyes. and good lord is that his biggest weakness. but back to the point- she is a bubbly kid, always laughing and has a smile on her face. but if she doesn't like something (a person, a place, a food, etc.) she will let dad/mom/nanny naomi know about it. which she also gets in trouble for at school for simply telling other kids "i don't like you, you (insert reason here)". she's intense, she intimidates even nate's teammates sometimes. but once you have penny's approval, you have it for life pretty much. she wasn't ever one for sports, she's tried a few things but never really found her fit in any of them. but she is her dad's #1 fan for sure. nobody supports nathan like his lucky penny <3. to end, penny most definitely is an attention seeker. if she doesn't have all the attention she will get it. she loves her dad more than anything, but she hates going to his games bc "hockey is no fun". penny is the popular girl in school in every grade she's in. even though she has her little "posse", milo will always be her best friend.
gemma patrick: ugh, what a sweet girl. looks just like dad. the light brown hair, the blue eyes- everything looks wise she has. but even though she looks like nolan (even in the sonogram pictures mom was like "she looks like you nolie"), she grows to be like mom. chatterbox- once she says her first word (which was daddy), she never stops talking. very talkative child, she's always asking questions and always pointing things out. she's kinda shy at first but once she comes out of her shell it's hard to push her back in it. oh and when i say just like mom i mean it. gemma is a material gorl. she wants to dress up like mommy, be pretty like mommy. she wats to do everything like mommy. but do not be mistaken, she is a daddy's girl through and through. she might act like mom, but he's her #1 at heart. he calls her his mini princess. but she keeps to herself most of the time as she grows up, taking on some of her dad's traits that way. if she does play sports it's track/cross country. she reads all the time. any time nolan finds her she's got her nose in a book. oh and at family reunions, gemma and penny do not vibe at all (it was cannon that princess is nate's cousin a while back). just bc they're cousins doesn't mean they have to vibe. gemma is more humble, penny is...not. but yeah, gemma is nolan's pride and joy.
nelly crosby: 1/2 of the crosby girls, nelly is the more reserved of the twins. she's attached to sidney at all times. the crosby girls are the stereotypical twins, opposites. but the girls are sid's carbon copy. they have his curly hair, his dark brown eyes, slightly olive toned skin, even his half crooked smile. but nelly, absolute doll. she's polite, she always asks if mom or dad wants help with what they are doing. even if mom is just folding laundry or working from home, she always offers to help. nelly is a homebody honestly. where nora plays two or three different sports, nelly is back home reading a book or watching shows. nelly, when she grows up ofc, loves to have just deep talks with sidney. she just walks into his study, or wherever he's at and just plops down and asks a deep question that she know's he will have an answer to. oh yeah, did i mention she's a daddy's girl?
nora crosby: ah yes, the other 1/2 of the crosby girls. the wilder one. where nelly is introverted, nora is an extrovert. she's also the one who starts little petty fights (most of the time, not saying nelly is perfect). but nora is always putting herself out there. she spends most of her time playing outside when she gets home from school, just running around the yard or shooting hoops in the driveway. she plays just about every sport she can until she can only do two at a time. but nora, is also a daddy's girl at heart. when she's little, more often than not after dinner she's the first to leave the table after they finish cleaning up to go play outside. when she's done, she comes back in and crashes on the couch on sidney's lap. nora, like milo, will talk to anyone about anything. she's a bit of a chatterbox but she wont go on and on. both of the girls love spending time with each other though, normally where you find one you can find the other. they're each others best friends, and sidney loves it.
dad!nate Mother’s Day insta post plz i beg you 🥰🥰🥰🥰
mackinnon29: happy mothers day to sarah, thanks for giving me the best kid in the world, and for co parenting with me. happy mother’s day to naomi too, for being my lucky penny’s bonus mom. all three of you deserve the world ❤️
sarah: thank you nate ❤️ she has the best dad
naomi: aw 💕 love both of you so much
josty17: go sarah! go naomi! rockstar moms!
6erikjohnson: my favorite kid has some cool moms
calemakar_ replied: you told my kid he was your favorite this morning 🤨
6erikjohnson replied: okay and? he was my favorite at 9 am this morning, penny is my favorite now
Okay but Nate giving Penny a gift for Valentine’s Day and it’s nothing crazy but her reaction is so over the top it makes him so happy and he can’t stop smiling
He just gets her like one of those small box of chocolates with the cartoons on it, and she’s over the moon. Bonus if he gets her a little stuffed animal too
no because Penny LOVES Valentines day like shes obsessed !!! She loves making all her cards for her friends and the whole time Nate is sitting there helping her glue stuff with glitter all over his face and the biggest annoyed expression while she's all "daddy this is so fun, I wish every day was valentines day" and he's all "Don't say that P, daddy's tired" lol
He gets asked the next day “hey…nate…got som pink glitter on you” and he’s just “i dont wanna talk about it”
nathan, oh, what he would do for his precious little penny. though he never thought of himself co-parenting when he did have kids, he wouldn't have his life any other way. he can't imagine what he would do without his lucky penny.
