Song Title: Hulk Orange Juice
Artist: Ghost Blood
Album: Now That's What I call Dad? Volume 2: In honor of Our Founding Dads.
"Hulk Orange Juice" is the newest single from the CT band, Ghost Blood, which premiered on Dad?! Collectives newest compilation, Now That's What I Call Dad? Volume 2: In Honor of Our Founding Dads.
First off, I really love "Hulk Orange Juice." The progress this band has made since The Stephen Johnson EP truly amazes me. In this track, Ghost Blood continues much on their evolutionary path that was first initated on their latest EP, Ohio Is Four Brothers. I like the route that Ghost Blood has chosen. Where most bands clean themselves up as they progress, Ghost Blood seems to get more raw and gritty.
From the start of "Hulk Orange Juice," the track is all ready all over the place. With it's constant changing of tempo, this track does not fail to excite. When "Hulk Orange Juice" finally finds itself at the end, the whole song just explodes with power. I also love how short this song plays out. Even if it only spans just over a minute, this track has a lot of diversity and also packs a hell of a punch. There's enough liveliness and musical precision on "Hulk Orange Juice" to keep the listener plenty satisfied.
I really can't wait to hear what else Ghost Blood is cooking up. I think "Hulk Orange Juice" might just be their best effort yet. In the meantime, you should definetely check out the rest of Dad?! Collective's compilation.

Ghost Blood is a lo-fi emo//punk band from Connecticut.
On this newly refined track, Ghost Blood shows off a much tougher side of themselves. The vocals this time around are a lot more powerful and angry. The instrumentation is as well, with much louder and faster paced rhythms that are both stout and gritty. “We all bought leather jackets,” says lead singer//guitarist Michael Steck about the bands new sound.
Now with an official bass-player added to their roster, Ghost Blood has really solidified their music and matured significantly as a band. It is clearly evident on “Slant” and the album in general. With their previous EP, The Stephen Johnson EP, there was a lot more uncertainty and ambiguity about where the band was going to go and how they wanted to play. I think the band has really found themselves on their latest effort.
Ultimately, I really like what Ghost Blood has done and I look forward to what they put out next (maybe a full-length? Hopefully.). If you’re digging this too you should try and catch them at one of their shows this summer.

Song Title: Little Dipper
Artist: Good Weak
Album: DADGAD
Good Weak is a post-punk band from Monroe, NY. It is a band that has essentially formed out of the ashes of a once great indie-punk group known as No Dice, Chicago.
This track starts off with such a fucking nice groove that is gradually assembled. It comes in with just bass and drums to start. The bassline to this track has this nice funky riff that grabs your attention, all with the drums bouncing around the track with a nice ghost note beat. Then, as the guitar kicks in it casually glides across the now more complete instrumental. The feeling of the track is also just so smooth. When I listen to this song I feel like I’m walking down the street and I’m the coolest guy on the block (Of course, I never am).
When this track ultimately picks up, the result is really unexpected. It breaks into this loud and bombastic blast of energy. At first it kind of turned me off from the song because I felt the track was almost schizophrenic in its nature. Initially, it seemed to me that the two sections of the song did not mesh well. The essence of the beginning was so casual it just didn't seem to fit the Chalk Talk-like intensity of the latter half of the song. However, after a couple more listens it REALLY started to grow on me. I began to fully appreciate the song, and even found it stuck in my head multiple times. The lyrics to this song honestly embed themselves into your brain.
I friekin’ love this song, and I hope they play a show soon. Take a few listens and see if you’re into it. And if you are, you really should check out their demo//ep//thing because there are other great tracks on there (SPOILER ALERT: if you download it, there’s an awesome hidden track). To make one final comment: TJ is better than you at drums.

Song Title: Never Go
Artist: QUARTERBACKS
Album: LOVESEAT
QUARTERBACKS is a lo-fi punk band hailing from New Paltz, New York.
I took a listen to these guys for the first time the other day after always hearing about them throughout the semester. They have played at my school a bunch of times this year, but for one reason or another, I always seemed to miss their shows. I definitely regret that now because I’ve learned to really enjoy listening to them.
At first, taking a listen to QUARTERBACKS it seemed as though there was nothing on the surface. However, after a few listens I began to be fully intrigued by their sound. The fast paced rhythms definitely qualified songs like this on their album as a “punk” song I suppose, but the rather simple//bland vocals, high pitched guitar melodies, and songwriting concerning love gave it an interesting spin. It almost sounds like if punk music was created in the 1950’s.
What ultimately kept drawing me back to this band was their ability to be incredibly charming. With lyrics of complicated romance, along with its short and catchy song structure, I couldn’t help but continue listening. It gives me the same feelings as when I listen to songs off of one of my all-time favorite albums, Catch 22’s Keasbey Nights (I.E. "Kristina She Don't Know I Exist," and "Supernothing").
In the end, my love for this song and others on the album is driven mostly by the fact that it sounds fun, to put it plainly. I am a firm advocate of music that simply just sounds fun, and these guys are doing just that. Make sure you blast this song and their album LOUD for the full effect.

"Airplane" // Dumb Talk
What a crazy weekend! Was happy to host Dumb Talk here at the homestead the past couple nights. They played an amazing show last night with some other members of the Dad Collective (Our Daily Fix, GNGSGNS), as well as RAPWHISTLE, Friendless Bummer, and my boiz SSWAMPZZ. A bunch of punks came out to the practice space and had a good time; it was a totally successful show. Be on the look out for more awesome releases, shows, etc from these guys! They're all about to shake some shit up.
