Ivy – 9
Isla – 9 Months
——————
Now that Harry was back from tour and your family of four had settled back into your Hampstead home, Ivy had gone back to school for the end of the winter term. She had a tutor on tour who worked closely with her UK school teacher so they could keep her at the same level, or higher, than her classmates.
Ivy had been so excited to go back to her friends and classes, especially since the last time she went to school was the last day before the summer holidays begun. As soon as they were back from tour in November, Ivy was itching to get back to school for the last few weeks before Christmas rolled around.
Isla had just turned 9 months, and she was ready for her midday nap. She was placed on Harry’s hip while he was sat in his home office, answering some emails and making a few phone calls while you were continuing to wrap some presents. Her curious hands occasionally finding his soft, brown hair. Or her wide eyes following the gleam of his rings.
You had finished the majority of the wrapping already, but Ivy was finishing school early today as it was their final day before Christmas. That meant you’d now only be able to wrap once she was tucked into bed.
You knocked gently at Harry’s office door, pushing open the door slowly. A small gasp leaving Harry’s lips “Who’s that little bug? Hm? S’that Mumma?” He whispers softly, bouncing Isla in his lap gently.
You grin at the sight before you, Isla wearing her little Winnie the Pooh dress and black tights. “Hi baby, have you been good for Daddy?” You coo happily, pressing a kiss to her cheek. Harry’s arm snaked tight around your waist as he pulls your hips close, your belly was at his head height and he pecked small kisses against your hip bone.
“Mmmm, she’s been talking my ear off all day haven’t you” He chuckles softly as Isla’s arms reach up to you.
“I bet! Was Daddy boring you with all of his work talk? Hm?” You giggle softly and take Isla, placing her on your hip.
“Hey!” Harry pouts, but you quickly lean down and press your lips against his to get rid of his frown “That boring work talk bought you that ring and this house” He mutters against your lips.
“Hmm, and this expensive ring and ginormous house is the reason I agreed to give you two kids...” You smirk, nipping his bottom lips with your teeth before pulling your lips away.
“Only two? I’ll give you another soon” He smirks as you roll your eyes gently.
“Anyway...Ivy finishes school in about half an hour. I know it’s a bit cold but the sun’s out so I wondered if the three of us could walk to pick her?” You bounce Isla in your arms gently. “Then maybe we can take a stroll into London and get some lunch?”
“I like that idea.” He smiles, brushing his thumb along Isla’s cheek. “You go and get your shoes and coat on, I’ll wrap this little bug up” He shuts off his computer and takes Isla, carrying her downstairs and wrapping her up warm before strapping her safely into the pushchair.
You pulled on your new trainers and your Gucci coat, finding your little grey bobble hat and pulling it over your head, covering your ears.
You drifted downstairs, seeing Harry as he was ricking the push chair back and forth. “I think the littlest love will be asleep before we get there” He chuckles softly, his coat wrapped tight around him and some sunglasses perched on his curly locks.
“I wouldn’t be surprised. Let’s go lovie” He leans over to peck your lips sweetly before heading out the door.
The two of you took a calm stroll to Ivy’s school, you were pushing Isla and Harry had his hand placed protectively on your lower back. As you wander into the school gates, a few of the other parents were already waiting around. The children all waiting on the inside of the classroom.
The two of you waited around, chatting to the other parents about general things and Christmas plans. The best thing about the school run, was the parents didn’t care how famous you were, they treated you as normal parents, which you were, and they were always polite when they saw either of you. They never judged for any of the circling headline rumours, they never judged you for being tired and arriving to school in joggers and a tank top to drop Ivy off, they always said hello, offered help with school runs when you had just had Isla, they congratulated your family achievements and they wished luck when you all left for tour as you so often did.
And you treated them all with the same respect and politeness. It was nice to feel like a normal parent twice a day, and be in a press free area, as they were banned from the school area due to safeguarding.
“Lilly, I can see your grandmother here, you can go and have a lovely Christmas. Jay, your Dad’s are here, have a lovely Christmas. Ivy, your Mummy, Daddy and Sister are here for you today. Have a lovely Christmas...” The teacher waves off. They never let the children leave the class until they could see their parent or guardian outside, and the teacher could watch them safely.
Ivy ran over with a wide grin, it wasn’t often that all three of you were here to pick her up, so she was elated to see you all. “Daddy! Mummy! Look at what I made!” She squeals happily, her backpack slipping off her shoulders and her arms full of all the craft and drawings they take home for Christmas, as well as some of their work from the term.
“Wow Vee, what’s all this?!” He grins, kneeling down and helping her with her bundle of work.
“I made a book, and a calendar and there’s a thingy to hang on the tree, and then a picture frame that we made. And that’s my fairy tale story that I wrote that went on the wall and there’s some pictures that I drew and we also made a snowman with paper plates” She rambles on as she lets her things spill into Harry’s arms.
“Hey baby, why don’t you put It all in the bottom of the push chair, and we’re going to find somewhere nice for lunch, so we can have a look properly when we find somewhere to eat okay?” You smile, stroking the ends of her hair. Her hair neatly tied in a half up-half down styles, with a red Christmassy bow on top. Ivy was always neat, clean and well presented for school.
She nods happily and helps Harry to put all of her work carefully and safely at the bottom of Isla’s pushchair before flinging her arms around Harry’s neck, almost causing Harry to fall. He grins widely and wraps his arms around her tightly while you rocked the buggy.
“Hi bug” He whispers, doing up the buttons on her coat. “Daddy get a kiss?” He grins, tickling her side as Ivy erupts into giggles, her little lips pressing a kiss to her Dad’s before she hugs onto your legs.
“Did you have a good day today baby?” You ask, twirling her ringlets around your fingers as she leans into the push chair and presses a kiss to her sleeping sister’s head.
“Yeah, and we got sweeties!” She grins while linking her hand with Harry’s tightly, the four of you now heading out of the school gates and taking a short walk to the nearest tube station. The trains were quiet as it was mid-day, and most adults hadn’t yet finished work for Christmas.
Isla was stirring in her pushchair as the tube began to move. Ivy quickly jumps in front to see her sleepy sister “Hi Isla” Ivy grins happily, playing with Isla’s tiny hand. Isla’s fingers wrapped tightly around Vee’s finger as she whimpered sadly.
“We’re just on an underground train. You don’t need to be scared” Ivy reassures her.
“Vee, can you give her the dummy please darling? I think she might be a bit hungry” You say softly. She nods and do as she’s asked, placing the dummy between Isla’s lips and making sure the other end was clipped to her coat.
“What do you want for lunch bug?” Harry takes Ivy’s hand tightly as he helps her off the tube, also lifting the front of the pushchair for you to get the buggy and yourself off the tube.
She thinks intensely for a second as you exit the station, wandering back through the streets towards Covent Garden. “Can we go to Paul’s?” She squeals happily. Paul’s was one of the popular bakery cafés in Covent Garden and they often went as a treat for Ivy.
“Sure thing baby” He smiles, leading the way. The chill, crisp air was giving you all rosy cheeks and red noses, but the warmth of the café and the delicious scent of bread and pastries was comforting.
“Ah! My favourite Styles’ crew!” The owner greets happily.
“Paul!!” Ivy squeals and jumps in front of him as they high five each other.
“Ivy!” He grins. “Shouldn’t you be at school Misses?” He teases, leading your family of four to a cosy table at the back, away from the cold draft of the front door and enough room for the pushchair.
“No! I finished school today” She giggles. “So Mummy, Daddy and Isla came to pick me up” She climbs up onto her chair beside Harry as you sat opposite her, unstrapping Isla and taking her warm coat off, sitting her in the high chair beside you. You placed a few toys in front of her before taking your coat off. Harry helped Ivy with hers and then reached down to get all of Ivy’s school work.
Paul placed three menus on the table for you all “Can I take a drinks order?” He offers kindly.
“Three hot chocolates please” You smile, thanking him as he lets you all look through the menus.
“Daddy can I have a jacket potato please?” She asks, climbing up into his lap as he wraps his arms around her, glancing through the menu. Isla was babbling to herself, squeezing at one of her soft play books, biting it gently.
“Sure darling, or...you could have a toastie and a cake afterwards” He whispers with a grin.
“Harry! She won’t eat her dinner later if she has cake now” You shake your head with a chuckle. “Silly man” You mutter.
Ivy’s eyes glistened against the warm glow of lights strung above their heads at the mention of cake. “Daddy I’ll have a toastie!” She grins.
“How about you baby?” Harry asks gently, reaching his hand over and intertwining his fingers with yours. His thumb running over your wedding ring with a smile.
“Mmmm I kind of fancy a jacket potato now” You huff softly, indecisive at the menu choice.
“I remember that’s all you ate for lunch for weeks after you’d had Ivy” He chuckles, playing with Ivy’s hair like her loved to do, her curls sitting perfectly upon her shoulders.
“I know! We were both so busy after we’d had her, I barely had time for anything else” You chuckled sweetly. Paul came over with three warm hot chocolates, topped with cream and marshmallows. Ivy grinned happily as she posed cutely for a photo before diving right in.
“Woah!” Harry frowns. “Careful little one, it’s hot” He frowns. “Let me take a sip to make sure it’s you won't burn your tongue” He mutters.
“Daddy no! You’re drinking my hot chocolate” She whines, a pout forming at her lips and her arms crossing over her chest.
Harry took the tiniest sip, to be on the safe side. Paul had always made sure to put extra milk in a child’s hot drink to cool It down quicker, but Harry didn’t want to take the risk. “Yummy, okay you’re fine” He slides it in front of her as she dives in to the cream and marshmallows.
“Slowly baby, you’ll give yourself a tummy ache” You chuckle at her excitement. “If she gets a sugar rush then you’re putting her to bed later” You warn Harry with a warm smile, Isla reaching over and tangling her fingers into your hair. You gently untangle her fingers and tickle her belly gently, a wide, toothless grin appearing on her face.
“So let’s look at your school work then Vee!” Harry smiles, spreading it all on the table in front of you.
“Let me read you my book!” Ivy reaches over the table, taking it quickly. It was an exercise book that she had decorated on the front and back covers, with photographs and Harry Styles merch stickers.
“Go on baby” Harry beams proudly, his arms tight around her as she leans back into his chest, beginning to read her book.
“This book is all about what I did this year.” She begins, reading slowly and carefully. She had always been well spoken and never had a fear of speaking in front of others. It was an end of year project that every class did, the teachers thought it would be a good time to reflect on what they have done this year and things they have enjoyed. It was also nice to hear what Ivy would take from their travels and how she really felt about it.
“This year was the best year ever. In March, my Mummy and Daddy gave me a baby sister called Isla and she has green eyes and blonde hair. My Mummy says she has mine and my Daddy’s eyes.”
You look up to Harry with a loving smile and nod silently in agreement.
“In April I turned 9, and we had a really fun party in my garden. All my friends from my class came. So did my auntie Gemma, my Nana’s and Grandad’s, my favourite uncles, and some of Mummy and Daddy’s other friends. I got lots of presents and we danced and played in the garden all day.
I had a pretty unicorn cake and there were sweets inside it too. Isla was scared when a balloon popped but I promised to look after her.
In Summer, we went to see Nana in Cheshire where my Daddy used to live and she took me bowling and out for dinner. I really enjoyed this because I don’t get to see my Nana much.”
“My Daddy loves to sing, and he has been singing since he was little. Last year he made an album and lots of people really liked it. In September, me, Mummy, Daddy and Isla went on a plane to America so that my Daddy could do some of his tour. Sometimes we stayed in different hotels, but sometimes we had to stay on the big bus.
We were really happy and had lots of fun. I was allowed to watch the show most nights. Sometimes with Mummy, but usually with my Uncle Jeff. The crowd was noisy and cried sometimes, but Daddy sang lots of songs for them and would dance on the stage.
My favourite place we visited was New York because Mummy took me to see Wicked on Broadway and when Daddy did a show on the big stage, he let me go and dance with him”
Harry chuckled quietly with soft tears in his eyes, resting his chin on her shoulder as she reads, without a mistake or stutter.
“I love going to work with Mummy and Daddy because we go to fun places and Daddy is a great singer. Lots of people crowd around him, but his security friends make sure he is safe. He wears lots of outfits on stage and his friend Harry gets me and Mummy and Isla outfits to match.
Me and Daddy paint each other's nails and sometimes Mummy lets us paint hers too, but she likes the people in the shop better.” She giggles softly at that last sentence as you give her a playful scowl, making her giggle even more.
“Mummy and Daddy are my best friends, and so is Isla. Daddy said that we are going to Europe next year for the next part of the tour and I’m really excited.
I like to see new places and I know I’m very lucky that I can go and see them. I hope I get to dance with my Daddy on stage again because that was the best day ever, and I hope that next time Mummy and Isla can watch Daddy’s shows with me in the crowd.
I can’t wait for Christmas and I have been telling Isla all about Santa Clause and that he puts presents in our stockings on Christmas Eve. All our family are coming round and I can’t wait to go and see my uncles Niall, Liam and Louis and their families for New Year's Eve.
I have asked for a guitar for Christmas because I want to be just like Daddy when I am older and write songs for lots of people. Mummy cooks the best dinner and I can’t wait to play with Isla and share my new toys with her.”
She smiles as she finished, clearly feeling very proud of herself, as she should.
You and Harry give her a happy and small applause. “That was amazing baby. I’m so proud of you” You lean over to kiss her sweetly.
“Love you Mummy” she giggles sweetly.
“I love you most my little Vee” You whisper and sit back down.
“Did you like it Daddy?” Ivy turns around.
“Best thing I’ve ever heard” He grins, discreetly wiping the faint wetness in his eyes. “You’ve been so good for us this year. Especially with your baby sister and going on tour too.” He whispers, her arms cuddling round his neck and her cheek resting on his shoulder. He pressed sweet kisses to her nose and cheek as she giggled sweetly.
“Daddy your hair tickles” She squeals, her little cheeks turning red.
“Oh no...well I suppose I’ll just have to...tickle your belly too” He grins, ticking her sides, belly and under her arms.
She let out a loud squeal, her happiness filling the empty café and her squeals making Isla giggle too. She seemed to calm down once her food arrived. Happily filling herself up on Toastie and cake.
“You know what Vee, how would you like to go and see Winter Wonderland today hm? I think you’ve been good enough”
Her eyes lit up as you pulled her coat on, buttoning it back up and pulling her matching bobble hat over her head. She’s been asking to go since you came back from tour but you just hadn’t had the time.
“Yes please Mummy!” She giggles.
Harry paid at the counter and the four of you said your goodbyes to Paul. Harry pushed Isla and you held Ivy’s hand tightly. A gentle and calm flurry of snowflakes sprinkled all around, with the decorations and lights lining the streets.
Happiness. That was what Christmas was all about. That was all that mattered.
