My dearest son,
You, my firstborn, have brought us more joy than you could ever truly know. You are my world. Your first smile was unexpected and yet, it could not have come at a more needed time.
Your mom and I were both completely exhausted–physically, mentally, and emotionally. It had been a particularly overwhelming day. We couldn’t get you to sleep. Your mom refused to leave you, she loved knowing the last thing you saw before falling asleep was our faces. She wanted you to know we would always be there for you and that you were loved even in your dreams. Silent tears slid out of her tired eyes as she attempted to soothe you. And just when it was becoming too much, you smiled.
The way your whole face lit up as you smiled up at your mom was something I was not prepared for... nor was she. Even though her tears flowed more fully, I had never seen her so happy. That smile, and the memory of it, continues to warm every part of me in a way I never could have anticipated. You gave us the greatest gift when we least expected it.
My beautiful girl,
You are the light of my life. Your smile illuminates a room. It may have taken you longer than Vincent to get there, but when you did, it was perfect.
Your mom and I were playing peek-a-boo with you and your brother. (If you can imagine that! It was never something I ever foresaw myself partaking in so freely. However, for you and your brother, there was and is nothing I wouldn’t do.) I don’t know how long we were playing, but one of the times, when I removed my hands from my eyes, you were smiling–your first real smile. It was reflected in your beautiful eyes. The more your mom and I smiled and fussed over you, the more both you and Vincent smiled. It was truly a remarkable moment, one we shall never forget.
Bogart heard all the noise and celebration and came running to see. When he put his head on my lap between you and me, you smiled and smiled. You have hardly stopped smiling since. You are a ray of sunshine on every cloudy day.
You and your brother have taught me so much in these precious first weeks already. I find my heart filled to a capacity I did not know existed.
