An excited cry for Mummy and Daddy broke through the quietness of your peaceful morning.
Sitting up in bed, you wiped the sleep out of your eyes and switched the lamp on by your bedside, just in time for your two year old son to come running into the room. “Good morning Minyul,” you chimed softly.
Full of far too much energy for this time in the morning, Minyul reached the foot of your bed and started climbing up the covers, slowly crawling his way onto your lap. “Guess what Mummy?” he squealed, bouncing up and down like a bouncy ball. “Guess what, guess what, guess what!”
“What is it honey?” you asked in a quiet voice, conscious of your sleeping husband next to you who was rehearsing late last night. Your fingers reached up and brushed the dark messy strands of hair that had fallen over your son’s forehead.
He beamed a toothy grin that made your heart melt. “Mummy there’s white stuff falling from the sky,” he told you excitedly, jabbing his cute little fingers towards the window. “It’s everywhere!”
You laughed lightly, pinching your son’s soft chubby cheeks. “Really?” you exclaimed, lifting him up and climbing out of bed to carry Minyul on your hip. “Let’s have a look, shall we?” Your son cheered loudly, making you hush him softly as you carried him towards the window.
Lifting the shielding blinds, you gasped in wonder as you revealed the snowy landscape of your neighbourhood. “Oh wow,” you breathed, your lips parting a little.
“What is it Mummy?” Minyul asked, his expression a mirror of yours as he stared out the window in pure amazement. His soft brown eyes were wide with a twinkle of excitement within them, trying to take in the blanket of snow that was covered everything.
“It’s snow,” you explained, squeezing him close to your body.
It was only then that you realised Minyul had never seen snow before. His innocent curiosity had him transfixed on the white sheet that had engulfed his once familiar neighbourhood. He looked up at you with a huge smile, repeating the word ‘snow’ over and over again so it was ingrained in his memory. It made your heart skip with happiness, excited to share another milestone with your son.
“Did someone mention snow?” a sleepy voice asked.
You glanced over your shoulder, seeing your husband slowly sit up, hugging the covers close to his body. After four years of living together, three of which as husband and wife, you still loved waking up to his handsome face.
“DADDY!” Minyul cheered, wriggling for you to put him down so he could sprint back to your bed. “It’s snowing Daddy!” he squealed loudly, throwing himself on the bed and attempting to jump up.
Jongdae reached down and helped his son up onto the bed. “I heard little man,” he replied, fighting back a little yawn. “How about we have breakfast, get dressed and then go outside and play in the snow?” he suggested with a flash of a smile in your direction.
“Let’s go!” Minyul screamed, leaping into Jongdae’s arms and tackling him back into the pillows, before scampering off the bed and attempting to pull his father with him.
Seeing how reluctant your husband was to leave the comforts of your bed, you stepped in and saved his morning. “Why don’t you go and check on Bomi honey?” you offered to Minyul, watching his eyes widen at the mention of your caramel coloured dog who was no doubt waiting for him downstairs.
In an instant, your son had dropped Jongdae’s hand and was sprinting out of your bedroom completely, calling out for Bomi.
“Make sure you go down the stairs backwards,” Jongdae called out as an afterthought, falling back on the mattress and stretching his arms up above his head.
Wrapping yourself up in your dressing gown from the back of the door, you perched on the bed and smiled down at your husband. “Do you want me to give you an extra hour?” you offered, seeing how soft Jongdae looked wrapped up in the white sheets.
He shook his head, pulling himself upright and pushing his fingers up into his dark hair. “I’ll just take a little shower to wake up properly,” he replied in a low voice that made your heart flutter, fighting back a yawn.
“I’ll get started on the pancakes then,” you replied, leaning over to plant a small soft kiss on his awaiting lips. He tried to deepen the kiss, his hands trying to get ahold of you and tickle you into submission, but you reacted quickly and wriggled out of his grip. “Hurry up and shower babe,” you told him before heading downstairs to make sure your son wasn’t creating too much chaos.

After demolishing a stack of chocolate chip pancakes, your little family wrapped themselves up in multiple layers and staggered into thick boots to brave the outdoors. Minyul was like a firecracker as soon as he saw the white snow, racing as fast as his little legs would take him with Bomi bouncing at his heels. You and Jongdae followed slowly hand in hand, relishing in the crunch of the snow under your boots.
“Be careful,” you warned your son, noticing that he was treading deeper.
“Mummy, it’s really cold,” Minyul screamed excitedly, jumping up and down on the spot and digging his hands into the dusty snow.
You laughed into your thick scarf. “Snow is usually very cold!” you explained, peeling your gloves off and pulling your phone out of your pocket to take some photos.
Jongdae swooped down and lifted Minyul high above his head, making your little puppy yap loudly at his feet. “How about we build a snowman?” he suggested, setting Minyul back on two wobbly feet.
“A big snowman,” your son gasped, stretching his arms out to their fullest length.
The two of them slowly started their snowman, creating a small ball of snow that they rolled your small garden to make it better. Minyul was very helpful and pushed the ball around with his father’s help. Bomi however was no help at all and kept chasing the ball like it was something to play with.
“Bomi!” you tried calling out to her, ducking inside quickly to get a tennis ball for her to play with. “Bomi, what’s this?” The ball immediately grabbed her attention and she left Jongdae and Minyul to their snowman creation, deciding that you throwing a ball into deep snow and having her retrieve it was a lot more fun.
With a lot of rolling in the snow, the snowman slowly formed. Once the first ball was as tall as Minyul, they started on the head. Jongdae made another little ball and told his son to roll it around for a few minutes before joining you and Bomi.
“Did you take enough photos?” he asked, wrapping his arms around your waist from behind and placing his chin on your shoulder.
You laughed sarcastically, throwing Bomi’s ball far and then taking your phone out of your pocket. Positioning it in front of you both, you switched the camera forward facing and smiled. “Just one more to take,” you murmured, angling your phone to get the best photo.
You counted down and pressed the button, taking a cute picture of you and your husband.
Jongdae kissed your cheek and loosened his grip on your waist. “Your turn now,” he spoke softly in your ear, taking your phone out of your hand and turning the cameras direction on you.
“Stop it Jongdae,” you resisted, holding out your hands to try and block his view. It was cold and you didn’t want any pictures of you with a nose as red as Rudolph’s.
But your husband didn’t give up, running around you in the snow persistently. “Come on babe, just one photo,” he insisted in his cute whiny voice.
“I don’t want to,” you countered in your own whine. To get your point across, you crouched down and threw a handful of snow at your husband.
The flurry of snow hit him straight in the face, causing his expression to grow dark and serious. “I can’t believe you just did that,” he muttered scornfully in disbelief.
“What are you going to do about it?” you teased, biting your bottom lip as you rose to your feet.
A twinkle appeared in the depths of Jongdae’s soft eyes, a devilish one that was always followed by trouble. “It’s on!” he declared, stowing your phone in his pocket and then bending down to collect scoopfuls of snow.
Immediately you recognised the danger and ran for cover behind the car. “Oh no you don’t,” you squealed, trudging clumsily through the snow to hide. “I’m already freezing cold!”
You heard Jongdae’s evil laugh from the other side of his car. “You’re the one that declared war!” he yelled at you. There was a crunching sound from the compact of snow under feet, and then your husband appeared around the edge of the car, poised with a snowball in his hand. Before you could react, he had hurdled the ball in your direction, hitting you smack in the chest.
“You’re going to get it now!” you replied, launching snow from the top of the car at him before running for cover.
The battle that ensued was a cold one, filled with half-finished snowballs and lots of running. All the squealing caught Minyul’s attention, so you swooped him up in your arms and used him as a shield. “Honey, you need to protect me from Daddy,” you pleaded with him, running to the far end of the garden and setting him down so you could start making snowballs.”
“That’s not fair! It’s two against one,” Jongdae whined with a pout.
“Not true; you have Bomi,” you replied, stretching your arm back to toss a snowball at him. Your aim was off though, skimming his thigh.
He frowned at you for a moment. Bomi wasn’t much of a team player, unless it concerned her tennis ball.
However the battle continued, snow flying everywhere with everyone being smacked with balls of snow. No snowflake was left unthrown. In the end though, there was no winner. Everyone was just cold. Even Bomi was shivering a little, her caramel fur dusted white.
As Jongdae’s snowball hit the back of your head, snow trickled underneath your coat and down your spine, you squealed from the cold and held your hands up in surrender. “Truce!” you called out.
“Just when I was beginning to win!” Jongdae pouted.
You smirked, stepping up to him and fluffing the snow out of his dark strands of hair. “We can continue it later, minus the snow,” you whispered, reaching up on your tiptoes to capture his cold, but soft lips.
However the kiss was interrupted by Minyul. Your son slapped his small palm against your leg persistently, whining for attention.
Jongdae laughed against your lips, pulling back and looking down at your feet. “Let’s finish this snowman and then warm up inside,” he suggested, squeezing your waist quickly before letting go and taking Minyul’s little hand.
Together they waded through the snow back to their abandoned snowman and lifted its head that Minyul had rolled, onto the body. While Jongdae pulled his scarf off to wrap around the snowman, your son turned to look at you. “Mummy, we need a carrot for his nose,” he told you cutely.
“Yes sir,” you answered with a little salute before you trudged your way back inside to get what Minyul wanted.
Back outside, your boys had collected a few rocks from the garden to for eyes and a small smile. “Ah the finishing touch,” Jongdae exclaimed as you passed him the carrot. “Would you like to do the honours buddy?” he asked, hoisting his son up so he was tall enough to put the carrot in place.
“We did it!” Minyul squealed, clapping his little hands as Jongdae put him back on the snowy ground.
You beamed down at him with pride. “It’s the best looking snowman I’ve ever seen!” you cheered enthusiastically, standing back to get a good view.
Jongdae shared your smile and then checked his pockets in search of something. “I think it’s time for a family photo with our new member,” he suggested, pulling out your phone. You frowned at him, but immediately softened when he flashed his perfect smile.
“Come on Minyul, let’s take a photo with Daddy and the snowman.” You lifted him up into the air and fitting him on your hip, carefully walking through the snow to get behind the snowman.
Crouching down in front of the snowman, Jongdae lifted your phone up, making sure to fit you all in. “Say cheese!”
“Wait!” Minyul shouted suddenly. “What about Bomi?”
All three of you called out Bomi’s name, searching the white blanket for a glimpse of her golden caramel fur. After a few shouts, she appeared, scurrying out from underneath Jongdae’s car covered in snow with her precious tennis ball in her mouth. She bounded over to Jongdae and dropped her ball in front of him. Before she had the chance to run away, he grabbed her around her middle and held her on his lap with difficulty.
“Ok let’s all look at the phone so we can take this photo and then go inside for hot chocolate before we start to lose our toes,” you insisted, the freezing temperature starting to chill your bones and make your teeth chatter.
Jongdae laughed and angled your phone so you all fitted in the photo. “Three, two, one!”
And the photo was taken.
“Alright now everyone inside so we can warm up,” you declared, hurrying back to the house as fast as your frozen legs could take you.
As soon as you got back into the house, you all headed upstairs to get changed out of your frozen clothes and into some warm pyjamas. While you helped Minyul into his favourite Mickey Mouse pyjamas, Jongdae helped Bomi warm up with a heated towel, before you all converged on your bed for movie time.
“You guys pick the film, I’ll get some warm snacks,” you told him, making your way downstairs to make some hot chocolate for the three of you, plus a small plates of Jongdae’s favourite cookies. With a tray full of yummy treats, you climbed the stairs to see what film had been chosen.
“The Incredibles!” Minyul announced excitedly as soon as you walked into your bedroom. Since having your son, the only films you watched now were animated films, but this one was one of your favourites before you had Minyul.
Jongdae pulled back the covers and allowed you to climb in next to him. “It was this or Alvin and the Chipmunks,” he whispered in your ear as you passed him a hot chocolate and snuggled up against his side.
“Good choice,” you murmured back, giving him a short kiss.
The movie quickly started, drawing everyone’s attention to the large TV attached to the wall. You carefully passed Minyul his hot chocolate and then rested your head on your husband’s upper arm, beckoning Bomi up onto your lap so some well deserved strokes. Your spare hand found Jongdae’s under the covers, fingers interlaced with his thumb brushing small patterns on the back of your hand. Even without looking at him, you could tell he was smiling.
About halfway through the movie, you saw Minyul’s head drop against his father’s chest. Leaning forward, you peered down at him and smiled, seeing his soft face relaxed with sleep. You brushed the dark hair off his forehead and looked back at Jongdae. “Out like a light,” you whispered with a smile, lying back gently.
As the final battle began on the TV, you felt Jongdae’s hand go slack in yours. A little peek at his face confirmed what you were thinking. Your husband, sleeping soundly with traces of a smile still on his lips.
“Oh my boys!” you sighed wistfully, pulling your sheets up so they covered all four of you and left your little family all warm and cosy. It was the perfect snow day.
Between the amazing moodboard I came across and the Great British Blizzard that surrounded us in snow for three days, I was totally inspired for this little piece of pure fluff! Also, I might be revisiting this cute little family with some more one-shots (although not any time soon). I hope you all like this!
