I feel like I’m getting to a happy place with the Dadirri’s design. I like the way I’m doing the horns now.
Mood board I made for a original fantasy race I created, called the Dadirri; they live in the western parts of Middonmira, in the misty rain forest mountains and marshlands. They are quiet, magical and mysterious people.
The only images that belong to me here are my drawings, I don’t take any credit for the others, this was purely made for fun. The lyrics in the bottom right are from a song by Of Monsters And Men called Crystals :)

“Among some of the Australian Aboriginal peoples, there is a state of being known as dadirri, which translates into English as “deep listening”. Hank notes that through deep listening, we are able to connect to the spiritual mosaic of Nature from which we are inseparable.” -Awakening to the Spirit World
Congratulations to Indigenous elder, artist and educator Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann AM for being named the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year. Apart from her artwork, and work in education, she is perhaps best known for her reflections on dadirri – “inner, deep listening and quiet, still awa

“In discussing what it means to see humans as one small part of a broader cosmos populated by diverse beings and diverse ways of being, including animals, wind, dirt, sunsets, songs and troop carriers, we argue for a way of knowing/doing which recognises that: ‘things can only come into “being” through an ongoing process of be(com)ing together. They are never static, fixed, complete, but are continually emerging in an entangled togetherness.”
Lisa Waller, Indigenous Research Methodologies and Listening the Dadirri Way
+ “There is a quiet light that shines in every heart. It draws no attention to itself though it is always secretly there. It is what illuminates our minds to see beauty, our desire to seek possibility and our hearts to love life. Without this subtle quickening our days would be empty and wearisome, and no horizon would ever awaken our longing. Our passion for life is quietly sustained from somewhere in us that is wedded to the energy and excitement of life. This shy inner light is what enables us to recognize and receive our very presence here as blessing. We enter the world as strangers who all at once become heirs to a harvest of memory, spirit, and dream that has long preceded us and will now enfold, nourish, and sustain us.” ~ John O’Donohue
Into the Stillness | Dadirri
Over the past few days I attended the annual Marist Schools Australia (MSA) Assistant Principals’ Conference in Mittagong, NSW. The conference was an opportunity to gather with other leaders in Marist secondary schools from across the country to unpack our collective understanding of Marist Pedagogy.
The conference fostered the provision for deep listening, contemplation and numerous moments to enter into a space of divine stillness.
The Indigenous people of Australia have a depth of spirituality that can enrich non-indigenous spirits in so many ways. One of these spiritual gifts is Dadirri, the practice of deep listening and rooted in the construct of respect, for self, place (earth) and the other.
Dadirri means inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness and waiting. It is a 'tuning in' experience with the specific aim to come to a deeper understanding of the beauty of nature and the power of healing. Dadirri recognises the inner spirit that calls us to place of reflection and contemplation of the wonders of all God's creation.
Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann (pictured) belongs to the Ngangikurungkurr tribe in the Northern Territory, a word that can be broken into three parts: ngangi means sound, kuri means water, and kurr means deep. So the name of her people means “Deep Water Sounds” or “Sounds of the Deep”. Miriam-Rose says her people have “passed on dadirri for over forty thousand years”. It is most likely the world’s oldest contemplative practice. Deep listening has given Aboriginal people their spirituality, law and belonging.
For me Dadirri is an invitation to attune to the current of our own deep spring and deep listening. It is at the centre of all human flourishing.
When do you create opportunities to catch yourself in the profoundness of stillness?
“In living our spirituality we find our thirst quenched at the streams of living water. In turn we become ‘living water’ for others.” ~ Water from the Rock (n.14)
I invite you all to reflect on the ‘deep water sounds’ in your own life, those aspects of your life that make you feel vulnerable and thirsting for something anew.
Although none of us are special, we are however marvellously unique. We all need to remember our story is one of awe and wonder, of divine light. We all have an ongoing relationship involved within all the elements and life of self, place and the other. An unbroken flow of divine goodness sustains the existence of the universe in us all.
This African proverb best sums up my experience over the past few days, which resonates deeply inside of me as a Catholic ~ “Motho ke motho ka batho - A person is a person through other people” or “We are because I am. I am because we are.” This proverb encapsulates the deep spiritual aspiration of humanism, or Ubuntu - the concern for the collective well-being of self, place and the other. I am firm believer that character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you. It is the divine revelation of the truth of who I am and continue to aspire to be.
I will leave you with this prayer of encounter. I encourage you to reflect upon your divine light and to recite this prayer when you find yourself in the profoundness of stillness:
May we go forth into today and tomorrow
with open eyes to the spark
of the Divine presence around us
in the people we meet and
the places we go.
