Sophia Tate met and fell in love with David Adkins when she was a medical student at Columbia. They were originally partners, practicing procedures on a couple of dummies. The two of them fell in love, and though there was drama in their lives, they loved one another through it all. Then, a year after they got together, Sophia found out she had cancer - stage IV Melanoma. David was by her side through it all, even despite the bad prognosis and the frequent hallucinations, and even agreed to marry her at the church her parents (and by that, she meant her mother and her step-father). When she made a miraculous recovery and left him, she left him heartbroken. What David didn’t know is that Sophia was really Emilee Tate in disguise, and she simply did not want to be married to a man she did not know, so the two divorced and Emilee, as Sophia, moved back to Charlotte. Little did she know that her father would bring him back to Charlotte to be an assassin, and the two of them ran into one another again when she visited her father in his office.
