Dads - Februray 18th, 20th, & 22nd

If I’m seeing a show and I’ve never heard of the opener before, I often choose to refrain from listening to their music prior to the show. I prefer to experience them for the first time in a live setting. I feel like it gives a better first impression. 

So I saw three Reggie and the Full Effect shows. No big deal. I also got to witness performances from two other amazing bands, each of those nights. One of these bands was Dads. And no, they aren’t really Dads. 

Dads is a two piece band from New Jersey. They are made up of Scott Scharinger (guitar/vocals) and John Bradley (drums/vocals). Don’t let them fool you with the fact that there’s only two of them, these guys are loud and passionate. They play what is essentially classified as indie and “emo” music, short for emotional but as many of us know, has retained the connotation of being… well, what emo is. Unapologetically heavy on the beats and melodic tunes coupled with heartfelt lyrics, Dads blew me away the moment they began to play. 

It’s difficult to not be captivated by the show these two put on. The performance itself packs a huge punch. Bradley absolutely loses himself in his drum kit, while Scharinger rocks out on his own with his guitar. Pictured above is a picture I snapped of Scharinger’s pedals, because holy moly, there are a lot. There are so many intensely cool and different sounds coming out of that guitar and he controls all of them with ease. 

In addition to being amazing musicians, they’re also lovely gentlemen. I spoke to John after the New York and New Jersey shows and he thanked me for coming out, even gave me a few stickers and pins. By the way - their merch is cool as fuck. I’m the proud owner of a beanie that says “NOPE” on it, and I don’t think I’ve ever loved an accessory more than I do this one.

The Reggie tour may be over, but Dads is self proclaimed to be “on tour forever” and sure to be hitting the road again soon. Keep up with them on Twitter, Facebook, and their Tumblr. He can be seen advocating with organizations such as Resolve and Invisible Children on behalf of the child soldiers being used by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in central and east Africa as well as Humility Now to help raise awareness about the homeless right here in the United States. His concerts feature a combination of music, storytelling, media and visual art, all aimed at empowering youth to create positive, lasting change and build community. In 2010, Koji released 4 records, each a unique effort. Seaside Sessions was a raw demo tape that came together in one day with producer Gabe Liberti at Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn.
