Dear Dad, Happy Father's Day. Jenny, Erik and I have spent the last 21 years without you on this special day. Suddenly gone from this Earth at the young age of 60. Still not fair. You were the funniest, wittiest most loving father any three kids could have ever wished for. I miss our talks. When I was stressed, down,in trouble or excited about something, you were the one I called. I could tell you anything. You taught me to laugh at myself, to be humble and to be a "winner" not a "loser" in life. I look back at all the funny things like when I lost a game of HORSE on the basket court I had to go to the liquor store to buy you some Asahi or another kind of exotic beer. I was 12. Haha. I could go on forever, Dad. My candle is lit and my heart is full knowing that you occupy a very precious spot within it, always. Today I'm not sad. I am grateful God gave me to you to raise. I know so many great fathers and I wish them the best day on behalf of David Hietter. When I thought of the first few months of my newborn being here, I pictured shit and doctor visits as my main sources of frustration & concern. But honestly, the hardest part has been with my significant other.
I could tell you the backstory but then it would be apparent as I'm typing that I'm just being a whiny asshole. So here's the best advice I have for new dads that are as chill as me: Surrender.
Yes, I know the S word is a bad word but I don't give a fuck. I'm declaring today that I will no longer talk back. If she says "jump", I say "how high". If she says "screw me now big boy", I say "how long." If she says..... You get it.
Why have I suddenly declared this? Because it prevents baby mama drama. Plus, they generally just love that shit. (No brainer huh?) They love to see the tough guy doing the dishes. They love seeing us walking in with a dish full of heuvos rancheros. Times have changed my friend. Unless you want to be that guy on Facebook airing out your baby mamas dirty laundry, grab a white v-neck and surrender. Do it. You'll feel better. Build a hiding spot under a rock and disappear for 20 minutes here and there. But if you hear her yelling out "Babe, will you get me some coffee?", you say "Yes Dear, how much?"
