Meet Daemon! Shroo's flesh >:)
Some quick and dirty Blondeyes daemon sketches on their plane for funsies. Daemons are animal companions from Philip Pullman 's His Dark Materials trilogy. I'll try and include some of the lore while I write about reasons for daemon choices. Angel Eyes' daemon is Sentenza, and she is a desert-dwelling rattlesnake, of course. Daemons are supposed to be kept close by, and parting from your daemon is results in excruciating emotional agony -- but within the HDM lore, benign witches go through an isolation process where they separate from their daemon ( often a long journey without the daemon through some kind of wasteland like a desert) such that the daemon can go for long distances and be their eyes elsewhere. I headcanon that Sentenza and Angel Eyes have been separated this way, mostly because of their mutual curiosity about the process and the utility of it. They spend most of their time together, especially since Sentenza is not a flying daemon so it's harder for her to go for long distances. But it's useful for spying purposes, and occasionally to unsettle people (in-universe someone without a daemon is either a zombie or a witch whose daemon is afar-- either ways tends to set people on edge). Naeviera is Blondie's coyote daemon, I have canine headcanons for all of TMWNN's daemons. Blondie seems the most hardened and impassive of the three, so he gets a wild coyote. Naviera is a smart and shrewd companion for him, and she's very good at finding a path in harsh spaces. He calls her "Navy", which is a bit of a joke between them regarding his gun (a Navy Colt) In universe it's consider extremely intimate and faux pas to touch someone else's daemon, though daemon - daemons interactions are standard. Personally, I've always assumed that intimate lovers often touch the other's daemon, or people with poor boundaries. I feel like Blondeyes are both :P Possibly when Angel feels like he needs space from their relationship, Sentenza stays with Blondie. It makes it easier for them to find each other later, since though daemons don't know exactly where their other half is, they do have a bit of an internal compass as to where they are. Navy and Sentenza outwardly like each other more than Blondie and Angel do (sometimes daemon interactions reveal a lot more about human interactions). Anyways feel free to hmu with questions or comments about the lore, or about Blondeyes specifically. My next fic bit is gonna involve Cudlip/Ben in an AU where daemons exist so I thought this was a good way to introduce the concept :)

today we will be sharing the lore of daemons, shifters, and werecreatures! first up, daemons!
The origins of daemons are clouded in mystery. They display a high creative capacity and are known for their free form thoughts and ideas, but live a relatively regular ‘human’ life span. Daemons run the risk of being branded as ‘mad’ or ‘insane’ due to their tendency for their strange and high levels of eccentricity. Daemons are a link between humans and creatures due to their extra chromosome: 23 pairs +1 (where vampires and wix have 24). Unlike vampires, daemons do not have any particular scent that is detectable to witches. Some witches, however, report that the gaze of a daemon is unsettling, and feels like a kiss or being nudged by an unseen force.
Daemons are searchers, always longing to find their own kind. They live in their vibrant imaginations and appear quirky to outsiders. They find rules boring and unnecessary and are often on the experimental edge of culture. When it comes to interests, they can focus more intensely than anyone and are sometimes gifted with prophetic visions of the future. They walk a very fine line between madness and genius. Many daemons possess glimmerings of supernatural power. Although they cannot enchant objects as witches do, some report precognitive visions of the future and the ability to read the minds of others; these daemons are known as the "moonkissed". Though these readings and visions, like daemons themselves, are not always reliable.
Naturally gifted and unpredictable, daemons tend to exhibit their traits at puberty in one of two ways: extraordinary mental and/or creative abilities or madness. Teenage daemons are at great risk of harm from drug abuse, homelessness, and aggressive mental health treatments. And because they are often born to perfectly ordinary families, they can be unwelcome in their biological families, marginalized and misunderstood. In those rare cares where they are born to understanding families who nurture their tremendous gifts, daemons can be unusually stable and competent, and go on to accomplish remarkable things.
So I've been thinking about when/how daemons evolved.
And my working theory at the moment is that they started to develop around the time either homo ergaster or erectus did, maybe as wisps that followed them around, which would have helped with the development of language/culture, but they didn’t get any sort of solid form until hiedelbergensis, it wasn’t until neanderthals that they took the shape of actual animals, and only with homo sapiens do they actually settle. If that makes sense.
And maybe some of the anthropologists of Lyra’s world use this fact to assert that Neanderthals were less evolved/civilized than humans.
What do you think?
