Permaculture is so good
💚agreed. everything about it reminds me of how much i want my work every day to involve my whole body, acting and engaging in contact with the natural, physical world.

Humans have pretty much the opposite of a killer instinct which is illustrated by how we tend to adopt other animals of various species as companions
yes. i agree. this among many other pieces of evidence suggest a much stronger inclination toward compassion, empathy and the survival need for togetherness and social contact... with far less evidence suggesting tendencies toward competition or aggression.

that sounds like all of evolution tbh
to me too - yes i think so...
so..... I popped off facetiously about Animal Crossings New Horizons the another day ^^^^
which was admittedly obnoxious and uncalled for but it led to a really nice interaction with @daftari
who articulated what so many folks love about animal crossing so well - and with their permission I wanted to share with you all
I question everything but also very much welcome a good question and answer-back interaction 🖤💚🖤
daftari replied to your post: the chickens are fond of reconnoitering the coop....
oh, nice save! i hope your hen is okay
me too! -- she seems to be... no marks on her. several seem to have lost some feathers in the ordeal but they are all resting quiet now.... fingers crossed.

things i like about this museum: they keep old crafts & techniques alive as part of the living museum; the living museum has "actors" of all ages living & working in the towns during daylight hours (my youngest was a kid there for a few years); the museum organises visits for people with dementia, who often liven up & remember songs, favourite meals & stories from their personal pasts when they get to move in preserved environments of childhood/youth
very cool... making the truth of time’s spiraling tangible, available to attend with all the senses... so much (goodness) to think about here

Oh! You’ve got a coop! Awesome!
I know right!! The best part is... WE BUILT IT ALL OURSELVES. truly, it is almost all Lydia - she is a miracle with tools and her hands. I’m just a willing assistant. she has planned and purchased and hauled and unloaded and cut every single piece and personally put in every screw in that coop so far. she has two gorgeous pieces of dark brown corrugated roof tin for the roof to go on yet and of course, tons of paint and trim. she is away in TN at permaculture design school until Sunday but expect updates as the coop gets ongoing upgrades into the winter. (we have insulation and interior paneling and light and a switch and a grate to go over the radiant heater... fun stuffs!!!

so big already! if you get an aggressive rooster (one that will chase the hens) get rid of it. we had a crazy little white one that stressed the hens out so much & that's not what a rooster is meant to do
They are definitely growing - visibly - every single day. And their appetites correspond! The plan was not to keep any roosters... but alas, there definitely seems to be 2 for sure so far - one we like (Winnie) and don’t so much like the other who is a bit of a bully (Fran). Both of those are Wyandottes (brown feathered). The ones I’m really keeping my fingers crossed about are the light sussex... I really like them a lot - their personalities and their looks... I hope they are not both roosters. Please, everybody (all together now) keep your fingers crossed for us.
daftari replied to your post: “also… i still think doris is a rooster. maybe the only rooster. ”:
if there are predators in your area, keep the rooster. he will be lookout, he doesn’t need to eat anywhere near as much as the hens & he will share any prize tidbits he finds

no such thing as a quiet Rooster. Most of the noise is about warning the hens when there is the perception of danger. ( any thing that moves )
input {extremely treasured, reliable, and always welcome} in favor of keep a rooster... if i’m right about doris -- i can total see what you are saying. he’s constantly keeping an eye out!
also, the most consistent advice/input i keep getting about the chickens is this - almost word-for-word : “Everything will try to eat your chickens.”
so fingers crossed for a relatively? quiet rooster with a gentle spirit and seven hens
