Notes: There are probable influences from fandom and whatnot in this story. Written for Dagcup Week @dagcupweek, the prompt for July 1/Day 5: “Dragons”. The title is directly lifted from the Riders of Berk episode of the same name. This is set in Race to the Edge, post-season 4.

 Hiccup and Dagur watched Toothless play with Sleuther and Shattermaster. There were various local Terrible Terrors nearby. Dagur had his arm around Hiccup’s shoulders.

 It was a sunny day with a light breeze, a nice day overall.

 Hiccup chuckled at a silly jump Toothless had made and exclaimed his name.

 Dagur nudged him.

 “Hmm?” Hiccup asked.

 “You know, I’ve never heard the story,” Dagur said.

 “Of?” Hiccup prompted.

 “Why you named him that,” Dagur said. “I mean, I’ve seen his teeth. They’re right there. He can be pretty scary with them. Are you being ironic or something?”

 Hiccup laughed.

 “So, when I was a young lad of fifteen,” Hiccup said. “And I shot him down, I went to the crash site to find him, considered… killing him. And I couldn’t. Obviously.”

 Hiccup took a breath, glanced at Toothless having fun, and smiled.

 “So, I set the good boy free. He yelled at me,” Hiccup said.

 “Yelled?” Dagur asked.

 “Roared in my face,” Hiccup replied.

 “Anyways, totally didn’t faint at all,” Hiccup lied. He winked at Dagur.

 Dagur chuckled.

 “Soon afterwards, I had a question gnawing at me. Why didn’t he kill me? Because Gobber had said in training that they always go for the kill,” Hiccup said. “So, anyways, I find him in the Cove, where he’s kinda stuck on account of the fact I shot him down. So, I go and feed him a fish.”

 Hiccup chuckled when he saw Toothless’s ear flaps perk up at the word ‘fish’.

 Hiccup gestured to Toothless to come over, which he did.

 “So, I have the fish in my hand, Toothless has his mouth open for it, and he’s all gummy,” Hiccup said.

 Toothless opened his mouth to illustrate the lack of teeth.

 “And I noted that! I made a ‘Toothless’ comment and then just as I was like, ‘I could have sworn you had teeth’, I didn’t even get to finish the sentence, because…” Hiccup gestured at Toothless.

 Toothless’s teeth popped back up from his gums.

 “He did that, and took the fish.”

 “So, it is kind of an ironic name,” Dagur noted.

 “I’m nothing if not incredibly sarcastic,” Hiccup said. Hiccup caressed Toothless’s face with his hand for a moment and then pulled his hand away.

 Toothless then looked at Dagur and made an encouraging coo at Dagur.

 “Dagur, please give Toothless the pats he so deserves. He’s such a good boy, and an excellent judge of character,” Hiccup said.

 “I’d be a fool not to listen to him, right?” Dagur said, to Toothless.

 Toothless cooed in response.

 As Dagur patted Toothless on the head with his free hand, Hiccup smiled fondly.

 “You know, Toothless letting you ride him to save me was such a big deal to me,” Hiccup said, softly.

 Dagur stayed quiet, continuing to pet the dragon, but eyes focused on Hiccup.

 “It was one of the things that had me unsure how I felt about the whole thing,” Hiccup said. “If my dragon was willing to trust you, despite everything, and I trust Toothless profoundly, by the transitive property, I should be willing to trust you.”

 He looked over at Dagur and smiled at him.

 “And here I am, sitting next to you, with your arm around me, and my dragon is making you pet him constantly,” Hiccup said.

 Hiccup then tenderly kissed Dagur on the cheek.
