Part 4 of the Maya Tries Only to Have it Shoved Back in Her Face Series but now let’s shift to people who actually listen and get better and relieve my stress and aren’t part of the problem!
DAHLIAH: Okay so she’s not a person. It’s Charlie and Marissa’s dog. A 10-year-old poodle mix that is super sweet and lively and stuck her nose where it didn’t belong and got bit by some kind of poisonous bug for her trouble.
Charlie was outside at the time and he heard her screaming. He tried to get hold of her to see what was wrong but she ran inside. Charlie and Marissa finally got hold of her, but they couldn’t find anything.
Charlie has had 2 dogs in his life including Dahliah, but Dahliah is the only one that he’s taken care of himself. His ex-wife took care of the last one. Marissa has never had a dog before.
So they called me because my mom and I have had SO MANY DOGS.
I told them to check her over for crunching of bones, sore spots, swelling, redness, etc. All the things you look for when you don’t know what happened. When she seemed okay, I told them to watch her and call me with anything else.
The next day we found out what happened when a cyst developed under her left arm. Marissa called me and switched to video chat so she could show me the cyst. I told her that’s what I thought it was and to start warm compresses to enc... and as I’m saying the word, the thing starts erupting.
Marissa and Kaylin both ran out of the room and Charlie grabbed the phone and started asking me what to do. He’s much better at handling injuries and gross stuff. I told him to let it ooze, don’t push it, and start warm wet compresses.
The thing oozed for 2 days. But it didn’t smell, it wasn’t infected, and discharge was chunky cyst material and blood. Which doesn’t sound good, but if you’re going to have a cyst-like thing on your body, you want it to be this kind.
I had her on a pain reliever, an antibiotic, and Benadryl every few hours to cover all the bases. I told them there was a chance she’d die because I didn’t know what had bitten her.
She was so sad and moped around and made them carry her everywhere which I thought was adorable, and so did they even though we were all worried about her.
Oh, and did I mention this happened days after the city was put on stay-at-home orders and only emergency vets were open? Yeah. And we can’t afford an emergency vet.
Anyway I had them do a 2-week course of antibiotics. By the end of the two weeks she was perking up, the skin was getting thicker and healthier, and so I told them to back off on the Benadryl and pain reliever.
She started playing and yipping happily again, and we were all SO relieved!
She’s back to her normal adorable self :D
