Taiwan's contact tracing app to be required in some places

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) is promoting the adoption of its contact tracing app due to the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant and stated that it will require its use in "certain venues" in the future..The app, which is titled the Taiwan Social Distancing App (臺灣社交距離), it uses Bluetooth technology to sense whether a user has come within two meters of a confirmed COVID-19 case for more than two minutes over the past 14 days.

CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said that as COVID cases have increased significantly, the center has gradually simplified its epidemiological investigations through the use of technology and that replacing the real-name registration system with the Taiwan Social Distancing App is an "important direction.".

Chen said that use of the app will be vigorously promoted and in the future, it will be required to enter "certain venues." Chen said that the goal will be that at least half of Taiwan's population adopt the app.

Chen said that as the characteristics of the virus change, it will be more efficient to strengthen scientific and technological epidemic prevention methods rather than ad hoc adjustments and notifications by health departments. He said that the app is currently used by more than six million people and if 12 million people adopt it, the possible contacts will be much more likely to be notified as soon as a user is diagnosed.

Taiwan consider home quarantine for mild cases if daily COVID count exceeds 1,500 😮 The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Tuesday (April 5) stated that if daily COVID cases surpass 1,500 in Taiwan, the center will consider allowing people with mild symptoms to quarantine at home. During a press conference, CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) reported 216 local infections and 65 imported ones. Tuesday marked the fifth consecutive day that Taiwan had reported over 100 cases, with even mild and asymptomatic cases currently required to undergo isolation in a quarantine facility. Chen said there are 10,000 beds in quarantine facilities for those who have been diagnosed and that half are currently occupied. Given that the current quarantine period is 10 days, these beds will not be filled unless there is an average of 1,000 cases per day. He added that local epidemic prevention hotels have continued to increase in number and are being transformed into "enhanced epidemic prevention hotels," eventually raising the domestic capacity for mild or asymptomatic COVID patients to more than 15,000. Chen predicted that the combined number of beds in quarantine centers and epidemic prevention hotels should be adequate unless the daily case count exceeds 1,500, in which case the CECC may begin to allow mild and asymptomatic cases to quarantine at home.
