For our victims, their motherhood is the very backbone of our refusal to be vegan, for without their motherhood, the countless billions whom we bring into the world every year for the sole purpose of using and slaughtering, would never exist. However the motherhood of our victims is not the same as that which we celebrate today. It is a motherhood forced upon the innocent by our repeated violation of their defenceless bodies. It is a travesty of motherhood, where our contemptuous exploitation of their reproduction actually depends upon their being forcibly separated from their infants. And being sentient individuals who feel as we do, this separation inflicts such anguish, a misery that we ourselves hope never to experience. Despite our elaborate pretences that we 'love animals', the truth is that our species revels in violence and domination and our consumer demand for their flesh, their breast milk and their eggs perpetuates nightmares beyond the worst that we are capable of imagining. Every use we make of the bodies and the lives of individuals of other species – whatever their species - is a deliberate choice to harm them. On the day that we finally let the truth shine onto the hidden horrors that are being done in our name, we can decide to stop being part of it. All it takes is the will to say, 'enough'.
