In any normal situation, turning to find Rose Tyler would bring a bright smile to the Doctor’s face, a happy jump to his hearts. But this jump had nothing happy about it as his eyes set on the object she held so gingerly in her hands. Lead fell down his stomach.
He didn’t realise he’d gotten up and abandoned whatever he’d been doing before until he stood a breath away from Rose, as he didn’t realise his hands had started sweating cold until he’d taken the round mirror and its circle-decorated edges from her hands. In a rush, he pushed it into a pocket, any pocket, so neither of them could see it anymore---as if haste would help them forget it, as if it could undo the very moment, as if it could hide back the avalanche of memories; uncalled, unneeded, unsettling.
“Don’t ever touch this, ever again.” His hands gestured along his low voice to stress how absolute his command was, but even if his eyes bore straight into Rose’s, his mind was already somewhere else, somewhere far, far away, and long, long gone.
