Rookfest - Day 1 Introducing Dalgar Thorne

I don't know how much time I'll have this week (I didn't initially plan to participate), but I'll try to do what I can for @rookfest!

I've updated Dalgar's character sheet and there's more detailed stuff under the cut:

Name: Dalgar Thorne

Alias: Rook

Gender: man, he/him

Age: 28

Place of Birth: The Anderfels, his parents' modest farm near a small village (his father is from the Hossberg alienage, returning there after Dalgar went off with the Wardens)

Spoken Languages: Anders, Trade, a passable amount of Orlesian and Rivaini (his adoptive parents' languages, plus the language of the Chantry, I imagine), he could order a drink in Tevene or Antivan, can use plenty of Dwarven swear words, and he's definitely fluent in Dwarven sign language... he grew up with Wardens, so I imagine he's spent time around people from all over.

Sexual Orientation: bi/pan

Occupation: Grey Warden

Favorites

Color: Green, violet 🍀🪻 (and I associate him with gold🌾)

Entertainment: gets excited for the theater! the set designs! the special effects! the costumes! (he'd want to touch all of it/learn how it all works) he will also choose telling stories in a group over singularly reading a book (reading frustrates him).

Pastime: Learning card tricks, drawing, lockpicking, being outdoors

Food: Anything sweet 🍰

Drink: Again, anything as long as it's sweet; if something like frappuccinos exist in Thedas, he'd be obsessed (assume any modern AU version of him is only ever drinking his coffee in frappuccino form)

Books: if he is reading, he likes reading about places he's never been and a good mystery novel—he tends not to finish them, though...

Have They…

Passed University: "...I guess." —Casilda Thorne, the woman who basically homeschooled him in magic.

Had Sex: yes

Had Sex in Public: if places like storage rooms and behind the stables counts, then yes—almost exclusively, lol (not a lot of privacy in his day to day)

Gotten Tattoos: none

Gotten Piercings: none

Gotten Scars: plenty, the most prominent being the burns he sustained in a fire as a small child

Had a Broken Heart: in the romantic sense, I don't think so; but generally? Yes, a few people in his life have really left him high and dry and it hurts probably more than he's really acknowledged.

Been in Love: I think he's a little bit in love with all of his friends.

Are They…

A cuddler: Bigtime. Platonic or romantic, prepare to get hugged (unless you'd really rather not).

Scared easily: Not really, but he does get scared. He's pretty honest about it when he's feeling that way, too.

Jealous easily: Nah. He might get a little envious of others from time to time, but he feels like that's a "him" problem and deals with it accordingly.

Trustworthy: Almost always. He's not, like... cunning, but he can lie and cheat in a pinch and has no qualms about breaking promises if it's life-or-death. Very much straddling the line between Chaotic and Neutral Good.

Family

Siblings: He has two half-sisters and a half-brother in Hossberg; he doesn't know they exist, though he might discover them at some point and get to know them (he'd find this so nerve-wracking at first, but he'd love to be an older brother)

Parents: Dalgar's mother died when he was too young to really remember her; his father struggled to keep contact after Dalgar left with Wardens Casilda Thorne and Olivier, choosing to return to the familiar in Hossberg and remarry, leaving his son to the Grey Wardens. Luckily, Dalgar was more or less adopted by Casilda and Olivier, who came to love him dearly.

Children: Loves kids, would love to have kids. Will he? Not sure that's in the cards (we'll see).

Pets: Dalgar is a big animal guy, so he was always really fond of the cats and the horses at the Warden fort where he grew up, and he was always sneaking treats for them. If he'd been a Warden before the Fourth Blight, he would have done anything for the chance to bond with a griffin (he's taking any excuse to visit them in Arlathan post-Veilguard).

I've got some more stuff in the tank, maybe, and I've save some screenshots I like for posts later in the week. I've missed my boy.

WIP "i actually have something?!" Wednesday

Thanks for the tag @mythals-whore c: I've been really enjoying modern aus lately, so it was cool getting to see a bit of one of yours. And there's just something about putting these characters in more mundane settings and situations that we've probably been in that's been really satisfying to me.

I'm not sure who to tag at this point, so I'll just leave this open to anyone who has something to share <3

I've been working on the next chapter of my fic Lights in the Shadow:

"Why… ask about graves, then?" Dalgar asked.

Sybil shrugged a boney shoulder. "You said it yourself: we need to be careful of the Veil when we camp." She chuckled at his sheepish face. "The whole way from Vol Dorma it was ghost story after ghost story—you people are morbid fuckers out here."

Dalgar blushed and rubbed at his nose to hide it. "Well, death is…"

"No, no, I like it," she said, openly laughing now. Ahead of them, Conrad glanced back but flushed bright red and hid his face when Sibyl gave him a sharp little wave. She sobered up fast. "And you had it right: Death is. It's the only constant; we are all the same to Death, even if the living don't treat their dead the same."

Almost against his will, he thought of Casilda. If Death simply was then grief was the empty shadow It cast and all of Dalgar's sorrow, resentment, and anger—all the things they never said—rushed to fill that void. That grim day hung over him like the darkening clouds above, threatening to snow; he had helped build the pyre, as he had many times before. He had stood vigil with Mother Clara and a few other Wardens, singing the Canticle of Trials into the wind until all that was left was hot ash and bone. It had been the same funeral as always, but the sun dawned on a world that was new and frightening. Tears froze in his lashes. Despite the thin air and brisk winds, something settled over Dalgar like a heavy quilt and he felt at ease.

Dalgar sniffled a little and cleared his throat, intending to turn back to Sybil like nothing had happened just then, but he was surprised to see her staring at him, grey eyes wide and bloodshot. He fought to keep his smile up.

"You look like you've seen a ghost, Sybil," he said, awkwardly adjusting his pack; she just frowned, not hiding how she studied him, but whatever she saw either left her satisfied or utterly disinterested, because she waved him off and fixed her face into bland expression.

"Ghosts aren't real," she replied. "Weather just got weird for a minute."

He hummed and admitted, "I hadn't noticed."

After swearing himself to the Grey Wardens as a child, twenty two-year-old Dalgar Thorne is finally allowed to take The Joining. He and two other recent Warden recruits head out into the Wandering Hills under the guidance of Senior Warden Olivier du Lac; there they will bring down their first darkspawn and prepare their vials of darkspawn blood for the ritual, shrouded in secrecy. At least, it’s a secret from most recruits. Dalgar has known the hard truths of The Joining for years, and he is more than willing to make that sacrifice to secure his place among the Grey Wardens. But his fellow Warden recruits may not agree. Once their small party is deep in the wilderness, the two other recruits—a young human named Conrad and Sybil, an elven graverobber—reveal that they each have very different plans.

Boy this quiz really pointed out that Dalgar's greatest fear is also his worst impulse when he's angry and afraid!

And it's spot on, lol.

Dalgar's never been great at confrontation (his parental figures were loving but didn't model great behavior in this way, haha) and he will do anything to avoid an argument, including run away. To clarify, he's fine with other people's problems and can help people work through them without too much issue--he only avoids his own.

To my BG3 people: Deet's result would 100% be the same, lol.

I actually did this just for fun the other day and made the joke to my friends that this looks like a floral duvet from the 90s (...also that this was the color palette for my room when I was a small child ^^''').

I do love gentle greens and pinks like this—though I mostly wear blue, black, and neutrals and my home is mostly...warm earth tones.

Deet Silvermoon and Dalgar Thorne technically began as the same character, but Rook's writing took Dalgar in a very different direction, personality-wise.

Coming up with "real" dates of birth for them was kind of funny; they're both born on Nightal 20/20 Haring, but Dalgar is a few years younger than Deet and then there was the question of birthplace... so the mountains where Deet was born became Appalachia and the Anderfels became Colorado ^^'''

I haven't been writing much recently (though I really ought to) so... here's the beginning of the next planned chapter for my Lights in the Shadow fic. I'd like to finish this one. It may not seem like much, but the fic's going somewhere interesting, I think?

current start of chapter 3:

The sun had set below the far ridge and the sliver of sky still visible between the gathering clouds was illuminated in a brilliant golden hue. The towering hills on the western horizon cast a deep purple shadow that felt as though it leached the warmth from their very bones. Olivier and their trio of recruits had left that field of death behind perhaps an hour ago, though Dalgar was still keeping an eye out for Felandaris twisting below the usual scrub that clung to the soil and stone up here. The air thinned as they climbed higher into the Wandering Hills.

Everyone’s strength was beginning to flag. Dalgar, used to the elevation of the Anderfels, was only just holding steady with the ache in his legs and feet; Conrad and Olivier appeared much the same. Sybil, on the other hand, was struggling—stopping every now and then to observe the landscape or the clusters of lichen-encrusted cairns that sometimes lay half-hidden a ways off the trail—all the while trying not to look like she was catching her breath.

She was taking one of those rests, now, arms wrapped around her reedy body and pulling her cloak tight around her. She studied a group of four stone cairns in the distance. Three of them had been toppled by time and the elements, but the one that remained standing was a squat structure about the height of a young child and made of carefully stacked flat stones, likely hewn from the Hills themselves. The stones closest to the sky were worn smooth and the stones close to the earth boasted impressively shaggy lichen-beards of rusty red.

“Are those graves?” she asked Dalgar, who was lingering nearby so as not to leave her behind. She didn’t take her eyes off the cairns.

“No, probably marking something else.” he replied.

Sybil only frowned.

“Something wrong?” he asked.

“No,” she said, not bothering to look at him. “It’s cold.”

“Let’s keep moving then.” Dalgar gestured up the trail with a gloved hand. She merely nodded and they hurried to catch up to the others. Only Conrad had looked back over his should as they approached, but he didn’t say anything. “Olivier said we’d be making camp, soon,” Dalgar reassured her.

To Dalgar’s surprise, she allowed him to keep pace with her as they walked. Days—probably weeks, if you count her journey from Vol Dorma to Kasselwatch—of hard travel had left Sybil’s face drawn. The shadows around her eyes, contrasting starkly against her pallid skin, gave her a bit of a ghoulish appearance in the growing twilight. Dalgar could guess that she wasn’t from the Anderfels.

He had a feeling that she wasn’t from Vol Dorma, either.
