Oh man...writing this chapter was cathartic as fuck. As many of you know I lost a close friend back in June and I channeled that trauma into Eowyn's trauma. Did I cry while writing this? Yes. Are you going to cry while reading? Also yes.
Summary: A flashback chapter that gives us some insight into Eowyn's trauma. Warnings: loss of a friend, loss of a brother in arms, loss, death, mild gore, grief, trauma, language

Fall 1985
"GO GO GO GO GO" shouts Eowyn as she directs her squad into the underdark on their latest recon mission. "Avoid the vine tentacle things. Touch it and you're dead, and remember the first rule." "Take cover or die" her squad answers. "Let's go boys" Eowyn calls as she jumps from the plane. She pulls her chute and as she descends she feels weightless. Ever since she was small she wanted to fly. She remembers when she and her cousin Sarah played fairies and she tried to fly off of the swingset and broke her wrist. The squad hits the ground and begins to scout. "Don't step on the vines!" she shouts as Sheffield almost walks right over one. He checks himself and realigns as they continue to scout through the desolate wasteland. "Look for survivors, and any evidence on this place. We know the bare minimum so any intel will benefit." she orders. She and Sheffield go left while Larson and Howell go right.
Eowyn and Sheffield approach a house, a house that seems familiar to her. The duo carefully approaches the house to investigate the mysterious glow seeping from the windows and cracks under the doors. Meticulously avoiding the vines they quickly learned were part of a hive mind, Eowyn and Sheffield slowly make their way to the front door and push it open. âJesus fuck thatâs bright what is that?!â Sheffield exclaims. âI have no idea. Goggles on.â She responds. They creep into the desolate living space, observing a home that is demolished yet frozen in time. âThis doesnât seem real.â Eowyn mutters. As Eowyn carefully moves throughout the home she spots a photograph on a table. She recognizes the girl in the photo as someone she knew from her childhood. "Barb.." Eowyn sighs. She had heard of her friend's passing shortly after it occurred, shame fills her as she remembers not even going to the funeral.
"Hey boss, we might have something over here." Sheffield calls over the coms. Eowyn makes her way over to him, watching her step as she meets him at his location. "What have you got Shef?" she asks. Sheffield just points up to a glowing mass anchored between the ceiling and the wall. Eowyn clicks on a body camera so she can capture the image for analysis. "Tread carefully for sample collection." she states. "Gotcha." Sheffield replies. He carefully opens his pack to pull out the tubes and gently swabs the glowing mass to collect the gloopy substance that coats it. "Watch yourself Shef." Eowyn says, noticing as he swabs the mass begins to pulse ever so slightly. She holds her breath as he puts away his equipment, and once he's clear, she calls over the coms, "Alright boys, we've got some good intel. Let's get out of here and head home." Eowyn and Sheffield make their way back to the plane to meet up with Larson and Howell.
The small squad loads up their equipment and themselves into the jet; however, Eowyn is still very much on edge. She feels a slight rumble beneath her feet as she begins to climb up into the jet. "Howell, start her up. We've got to go." she orders. Howell begins to raise the jet slightly as Eowyn and Sheffield grab hold of the ropes to climb their way up. The earth below them rumbles again and the house they had just investigated begins to glow even brighter. "Howell, can you get us out any faster? I don't like the look of what's below me!" she yells. Sheffield has made it to the landing and reaches to help Eowyn up. The rumbling grows louder, the glowing brighter, and suddenly the house the team had just occupied erupts with a cacophony of roars and vine like appendages break their way through the roof. "HOP!" Sheffield yells. "Shit shit shit shit. Not today not today!" Eowyn mutters to herself. Sheffield reaches for the rope Eowyn is dangling from as she swings to carefully avoid the tentacles.
Sheffield finally reaches her and pulls her up into the jet, screaming as he lifts her. Eowyn lands on her back and Sheffield on top of her. "Thanks Shef. I wasn't sure I was gonna make it!" she says. Sheffield is quiet as he rolls off of her and that's when Eowyn notices the blood. "Shef! You're injured! Howell, get us out of here fast. Larson get me the med kit." she orders. "No no no no no, Shef you're gonna be fine okay look at me. Keep your eyes on me huh? Let me see." She cuts open his shirt to examine the wound. "It's pretty bad huh Hop?" he chuckles sadly. "Shef, no! You're gonna be fine. You're okay." she whispers frantically. "Larson where's the fucking med kit?!" "Hop, it's too bad. He went right through me." Sheffield says. They both look down at the wound, and sure enough he's been run through. "No no no no no. Sheffield you can't die on me. Not today, remember?" she says as tears begin to fill her eyes.
"Hey, Win listen to me." Sheffield starts. Tears fall as he uses the nickname reserved for outside of missions. "You're going to do great things. You're going to live, destroy this hellhole and then you're going to be happy. You hear me?! Please be happy for me. You're my little sister, Hop. You always will be. I love you kid, you hear me? I love you." Eowyn can't control the flow of tears as Sheffield cries with her. "I love you too Shef. You're my big brother. I'm sorry, this is all my fault." she mumbles. "Hop this isn't your fault. We knew the risks going into this, okay? This is not your fault." he says as he reaches for her head and gently pulls it down toward him. "Look me in the eyes Win and say it." Eowyn reluctantly opens her eyes and sees the light of Sheffield's dimming by the second. "ItsâŠit's not my fault." "Good, now c'mere" he says as he pulls her to his chest. Eowyn is now sobbing as he starts to sing.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free"
With his last breath, Sheffield says "Fly high, blackbird." And Eowyn shatters as they cross through the portal back to base. Medics rush to them as they land and her father has to pry her away from Sheffield's body. He just holds her and she clings to him sobbing, her tears leaving lines down her grime covered face. Eli holds her tight and presses a kiss to the top of her head, thinking to himself that this is the last thing he wanted his daughter to have to deal with.
Three days later, Eowyn is building a pyre so they can burn Sheffield's body. Her father tries to talk her out of it but knowing his daughter she won't relent. As Sheffield's body is placed on the pyre and the pyre lit, Eowyn stands and stares into the flames. Her father stands behind her and places a hand on her shoulder. Her stare hardens when she says "That place has taken too much from us and those we care about. I say we nuke the son of a bitch."

Fortunate Son blasted from the stereo of the 67 Kaiser that rolled into Hawkins, Indiana. Eowyn was on a mission, given her orders from her father she needed to gather a few people to assist. Driving carefully around the ravines that split the once quiet town she knows the route very well. Sheâs headed to a remote cabin that once held many happy memoriesâŠuntil her father had to up and move them to DC with his promotion. She was 15 when they left Indiana and now at 20, sheâs the youngest fighter pilot the Coalition has ever seen.
The music fades as she pulls into the gravel driveway of the cabin where she learned how to shoot a rifle, an unfamiliar bus sitting in the spot where her uncleâs Bronco usually sat parked. Eowyn shuts off the vehicle, grabs her go bag and makes her way to the deck only to be greeted by a very unfamiliar voice âWhoa dudette, state your name and your purpose here at this lovely forest abode.â âThe nameâs Hopper, Lieutenant Eowyn Hopper. Iâm here to discuss theâŠuhâŠsituation at hand.â She introduces herself formally hoping it provides a bit of leverage so the hippie in front of her will let her in. She stands up straight trying to make her 5â1â frame a bit more imposing to the man who stands at least one foot taller than herself. âWait..Hopper?â a more familiar voice crescendos as they walk towards the door. âWinnie? Is that you? Shit man I havenât seen you since I was in 7th grade.â âTimes change Steven. We all have a role to play, I just happened to get mine a bit earlier than expected.â Eowyn cringes slightly at the use of her old nickname. She and Steve grew up on the same block. Turns out when your dad works for a secret government agency, you get to live in the nice part of town. Steve turns to the unfamiliar man in the doorway, âArgyle this is Eowyn Hopper. Sheâs Chiefâs niece. Man will he be glad to see you. Come on in.â
Eowyn enters the room and heads turn towards her. Soon she is crushed under the familiar yet unfamiliar weight of one of her Uncle Jim's bear hugs. âWinnie, youâre here. Whereâs your dad? Is he okay? What about your mom?â âSheâs finally set down and released from her uncleâs embrace and answers âHeâs fine. Momâs fine. Iâve been sent here on orders.â âOrders?â a young voice questions. âYou must be Henderson.â She smiles when he nods his head. âI have orders to bring you all with me to the base.â A woman the same age as her mother stands âWait what base? You work for the government?â Another voice echoes the sentiment âWe donât trust the government here.â âBauman shut your cake hole for two seconds.â Eowyn snaps. She takes a deep breath, composes herself and continues âItâs not necessarily the government per se. I meanâŠitâs sort of a part of the government but more underground. They know we exist but they also know they canât touch us because weâre the best and we know their secrets.â âWait are you asking us to join the coalition?â Chief asks.
âMore like youâve all been selected based on your skills and abilities.â Eowyn replies. The balding bearded man stands up âI told you they were watching us. I knew it!â Jim looks to Eowyn as if he is asking her to explain. âLike I said, weâre not necessarily the government but we do know their secrets. However, we know a bit more than they do and we simply choose not to disclose that information to them. The Coalition isnât simply American based. Weâre international. We handle things that traditional militaries canât. Things that canât be explained but can be covered up by a decent story and some crazy tabloids.â She explains.
Suddenly a small female voice joins the conversation, âis it anything like Papa and the rainbow room?â âYou must be JaneâŠer..Eleven?â Eowyn asks unsure of what to call the young girl. âYou can call me El.â She replies. âEl, this is nothing like that. In fact weâve been trying to stop him for years. At least, stop him from experimenting with children.â Eowyn explains, shivering at the thought of someone doing anything like that to an innocent child. Eleven looks at her curiously and then sits down as if giving Eowyn permission to continue. "I'm a little bit like you in the sense that I was trained to fight because I have natural capabilities that make me good at combat. When dad kept getting promotions in the Corps, they kept an eye on him and what he could do. That's when he got the call from Stinson and was asked to form an elite unit in order to bring Brenner down as well as handle some other things. This collection of fighters, engineers, technical analysts, and others is known simply as The Coalition of Ordered Governments, we call it the COG." Eowyn looks up at the adults in the room after finishing her story seeing Murray Bauman's eyes wide. "What Bauman? You think we didn't know you knew we existed? You're pretty high up on our list of potential operatives." Eowyn states. Hopper chuckles and looks to his niece, "So is your dad still ya know?" "Are you kidding? That man will literally challenge death to a poker game and win." she answers. "So are you guys in? If so, we need to load up and haul out. I've got to make a quick pit stop first on orders from someone back at base but we can head out in the morning." She asks. El looks at her adoptive father, then to the girl who is apparently her cousin, "I'm in." she declares. "Damnit Jim, you've got a little me on your hands don't you?" Eowyn asks. "Unfortunately." he grumbles with a slight smile at the memories of her childhood antics. "Alright then, gather the squad, prepare for departure at 0600." Eowyn orders. She heads out the cabin and to her jeep when she stops and suddenly says "I know you're behind me Harrington. What do you want?" "This is where you went?" he asks. "Yep. And now you get to join the crew. It's good to see you Harry Harrington." she responds. He grumbles at the old nickname from their childhoods. "Trust me, I have a feeling it's going to be worth it by coming to base." she answers, climbing into her jeep. She turns the key in the ignition and shifts into gear before peeling out of the driveway as Battery by Metallica plays on her mixtape.
Damage, Inc. Chapter 2: We Are The Ones Who Will Never Be Broken
Summary: Shared secrets. Found family. Kept promises.
Warnings: character death-ish. Grief. Parent loss. Language.
Wayne Munson sits on his sofa contemplating his life. He's dealt with a lot in his 40 some odd years of life. Never did he think he'd have to bury his nephew. Hell he didn't even have a body to bury. Just an empty coffin and a headstone. "I'm sorry Caroline. I couldn't keep him safe." Wayne says to the open air. He then hears a car coming up the driveway, preparing to have to go out and yell at some kids who have decided his home is their latest target for vandalism. He's surprised when he sees a 67 Kaiser pulling in front of his home; he's even more surprised when he sees a 5'1" blonde girl jump out of the jeep.
"Hello sir, are you Wayne?" she asks. "That would be correct. Wayne Munson, what can I do for you?" he responds. "Son of a bitch. My dad will shit a brick." she says gaining a bit of excitement in her voice. "Who's your dad?" he asks. "Eli Hopper." she answers. "General Eli Hopper." "So you're Winnie?" Wayne manages a bit of a smile at the girl who is the age his nephew would have been had he survived the catastrophe. "That I am. Lieutenant Eowyn Hopper, at your service" she offers a salute to the man despite having a higher rank. "You served with my pops and uncle right?" she asks. "That I did." he answers. "Well, how would you feel about lacing up your boots one more time?" she asks. "Listen kid, I had to bury an empty coffin because my nephew's body couldn't be found. The only fighting I'll be doing is to clear his name." he answers.
Eowyn tries to hide her true intentions behind coming here when she answers, "I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." "That was his favorite line from Two Towers" he answers. "You know something don't you." "Perhaps I do." she answers. "Kid it's been two years since he died. Nothing you say can hurt me anymore than I already am" he answers. "He is the man who tamed the shieldmaiden of the north. He is my Faramir." she responds, "he is alive, well, and wants to see you. That is why I am here. We leave at 0600."
She salutes the older man and goes to turn before she suddenly is wrapped in an embrace. "Thank you." Eowyn hugs him back and says "It's nothing. Now he can annoy someone else for a change and I can go and take a relaxing bubble bath." They share a laugh and Eowyn continues "When we found him, and he told me his name the first thing out of my mouth was literally 'MunsonâŠ.like Corporal Wayne Munson?' and when he said you were his uncle I knew we had to find you. Dad's been trying to locate you for a while but wasn't really able to with his work for the coalition. Eddie doesn't know that I'm bringing you back with me, but he sent me here to let you know he's alive and I quote 'somehow landed the most badass chick on the planet and he hopes you're proud'" she explains, "knowing your background and experience though, I think you might be a perfect asset to our latest squadron of the coalition." "I'll pack up and meet you at Jim's cabin." Wayne says. "Five bucks Eddie shits himself when he sees you" Eowyn says. "I can't bet on a sure thing" Wayne chuckles.
Eowyn climbs into her jeep and heads back to her uncle's cabin. Driving slowly, she takes in the ruins of a once peaceful small town. The town that made her who she is. But there is a bitterness to her thoughts. This town shunned a man who allegedly died to save it. This town led a witch hunt on a man simply because he dared to be his true authentic self; something she would have not been able to do if it hadn't been for that same man she found two years ago. Eowyn was brought into this world kicking, screaming, and covered in someone else's blood. She would have no problem going out the same way; especially if that meant defending the people she cares about most.
Chapter Four: Heavy Is The Heart of the One Who Walks Alone
Flashback chapter! TW: Violence, injury, character death
Two Years Ago
âEcho weâve got a live one on radar!â Her father yells to her. Eowyn zips up her flight suit and heads down to the hangar. âWhat are we thinking? Full search and rescue or just single extraction?â She asks. âSolitary extraction. Itâs just one. But itâs a couple klicks in. Think you can handle it?â He asks. âDad Iâve been flying recon in there for how long? Just make sure we have medical on board just in case.â She answers. âYouâre going to have to drop in to collect the survivor. Hopefully Sanderson can get you low enough.â Her dad tells her. âSANDERSONâ she yells âletâs fucking do thisâ Sanderson gives a salute and the team heads to the chopper. As Eowyn climbs into the helicopter her dad grabs her arm. âYou come back in one piece. You understand?â He pulls her into a hug and pets her hair. âI promise dad.â She sniffles and jumps into her seat. âYou ready boys?â She asks. Several murmurs of agreement are uttered. âGet us in the air Sandersonâ
Crossing over into an alternate dimension in a standard helicopter would shred it like a log in a wood chipper. Fortunately for Delta squad they were able to modify the armor to prevent that and allow for interdimensional travel. âDelta base this is Echo. Crossing over now. We may lose you so keep your eye on radar.â She calls back to base. She punches in the coordinates that popped up on the radar to help navigate them to the person theyâre trying to save. âWho do you think it is?â Sanderson asks. âI donât know. Potentially someone who can help us figure this shit out?â She answers. âIt looks like weâre coming up on our target now. Iâll suit up.â Eowyn attaches her harness to herself and hooks the cables to the rings in the chopper and to her harness. âJacobsen do NOT drop me. Got it? I donât want a repeat of 84â she says. âOh come on Win. That was one time and in training. I havenât dropped you sinceâ Jacobsen answers. âYeah well the bruise on my ass that lasted for 8 weeks said otherwise.â She retorts with a laugh. âHop weâre closing in get ready to jumpâ Sanderson calls.
Freedom. Thatâs the only way Eowyn can describe the feeling of free falling from a helicopterâŠwell as free of a fall she can get while strapped to a Kevlar harness and rope. âSanderson I see the target. It looks bad. Jacobsen get medipacks ready. I canât quite reach. Sanderson get me lowerâ she calls back. âIf I go too much lower we risk disturbing the hive. Jacobsen can you give her more length?â Sanderson calls out. âIâve got a few more yards.â Jacobsen says. âHow we looking down there win?â âBoys we have bats incoming.â Eowyn radios back. âShit shit shit. Jacobsen drop the extra lines so I can strap him in. Iâve got him but I canât raise him on my own. Not with these fucking spider monkey bats trying to bite my ass.â She yells.
Three extra ropes come down and Eowyn straps the survivor in and tugs on the ropes to have Jacobsen raise the survivor. Eowyn reaches for her side arm and fires at the bats flying toward her. âJacobsen get me the fuck out of here!â She yells. She fires off a couple more shots before she finally makes it back into the chopper. Adrenaline pumping through her body. âFuck yeah! We fuckin did it boysâ she high fives Jacobsen before kneeling down to the survivor. âMy name is Eowyn. Youâre safe now and weâre going to take care of you.â She softly pets his head pushing the hair back from his face.
The team crosses back over into the correct dimension and Eowyn calls out âGET MEDICAL IN HERE. WE NEED O NEG RIGHT NOW.â The medical team rushes to the team and immediately whisks the survivor away. Eowyn runs to her dad. âDadâŠI think I knew him. From before.â Despite the overwhelming emotion she doesnât show it. âHeâs safe now. You can see him after medical is done with himâ her dad says. He hugs her one last time before going to his office to file his report.
Eowyn paces for what seems like hours until a medic comes out of the medical bay. "LieutenantâŠ.heyâŠWinnie!" they finally shout. "HuhâŠwhat? Oh. How is he?" she asks. "Well it was touch and go for a while but he's stable. He's going to be on bedrest for quite some time but he should be waking up anytime. It would help him to see a kind face. And it would help me to not have you wear a hole in the floor with your pacing." the medic responds. Eowyn slowly walks into the med bay to see a man once covered in the grime of the worlds living hell now clean. Stitched up and covered in bandages she still recognizes him but can't quite place it. "I know your face. You probably don't know me but you're safe now. If anything wants to hurt you, they're going to have to go through me. I'm amazed that you survived to be honest, but you're one of us now. Welcome to Delta." Eowyn says before she silently walks out of the room. Little did she know the sleeping man heard every word she said and her voice brought him comfort. Something he hasn't felt in a very long time.
Two days later Eowyn is back at the man's bedside. She holds up a few different books asking which she should read to him first. He doesn't answer, but she would still feel bad if he didn't want her to read Tolkien. Eventually she decides on The Hobbit, something her mother would read to her when she was young. "I'm going to read to you because Doc says that it could help you wake up. I hope you're as much of a book nerd as I am." she says quietly. She opens her book and begins to read "Chapter One. An Unexpected Party." At this she thinks she sees a bit of movement but she can't be certain. "In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty dirty wet hole filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell.." she continues on and reads to the man. As Gandalf speaks with Bilbo she proceeds to attempt to change up her voice to the characters. That's when she hears it. The faintest sound of a laugh from the mans lips. "Well hello there sleeping beauty. Did you get enough beauty sleep?" Eowyn jokes. The man attempts to speak but his throat and mouth are dry. Eowyn quickly scrambles to get him some water. "Shit I'm sorry I forgot you probably need some water if you want to talk. Here you go." she hands him the cup of water with a straw and helps him to drink.
Finally when his thirst is quenched, he answers. "Where am I? Am I dead? Is this the afterlife because I gotta say it's not a bad afterlife when a gorgeous girl is reading Tolkien to me." Eowyn laughs with happy tears springing to her eyes. "You're not dead. Quite the opposite in fact. You are however very far from home. Let me call the medics so they can check you over and make sure everything is alright and we can continue talking." Eowyn pages the medics and tells them that their patient is awake and talking. As they check him over she runs to her father's office. "Dad! Dad! He's awake!" she yells. "Excellent. Let's go talk to the boy." her dad responds smiling. She needs this win, her dad thinks. It's been 5 months since Shefield and she hasn't been the same since.
The duo makes their way to the med bay to see the man sitting up with a cup of jell-o in his hand. "Hello son. My name's Eli. Eli Hopper." her dad introduces himself. "This is my daughter Eowyn. She's the one who helped pull you out of what we call hell." Eowyn gives a small wave. "What's your name son?" Eli asks. "Eddie, sir. Eddie Munson." he answers. "Munson? Like Corporal Wayne Munson? Son of a bitch, you're his boy?" Eli asks. "He's my uncle but he's more of a father to me than my own ever was soâŠyeah I guess you can consider me his boy." Eddie answers. "I know your face." Eowyn says. Her dad looks down at her with a curious expression. "Mrs. Thompsons class first grade. Andy pushed me off the swings and you helped me go to the nurse for a bandage." "I remember now." he mutters. "Lucky for you now I can return the favor. You've got a lot of work to do to get fully functional again, but I'm going to help you." she smiles at him with a warmth he hasn't seen in a long time.
