Da Ming Lake

On the second day in China, I already had the chance to visit somewhere with my Chinese 'buddy' (the person who helps me out here). As we were both free, we agreed to visit somewhere in Jinan - Da Ming Lake. Even though it would have been better to visit in spring or summer when the water lillies are supposedly out, it was still very beautiful.

The lake was huge, and was surrounded by many beautiful old buildings where important people in the area once lived. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, as I never really thought China would be such a beautiful country (not sure why!).

We were also able to take a boat to little islands in the middle of the lake which was really cool to do (if not a little cold!). It was a really nice place to visit, and definitely sparked my interests in seeing more of Jinan and the rest of China.

After visiting the lake, we then went to eat Chinese hotpot (which apparently varies by region, so I guess I ate Jinan's hotpot). It was interesting to say the least! The hotpot was basically a big bowl in the middle of the table, with vegetables in water inside which were boiled. You then bought plates of food, like meat, mushrooms, etc. to add and cook yourself in the boiling water. Yi xuan, being a true Chinese host, bought so many dishes, so many in fact that we couldn't eat a lot of it! The hot pot had 2 sections - one spicy, and one plain. The spicy side was indeed SPICY, reminding me what spicy actually is, after having spent the previous 5 months in Japan where very spicy seems to be like a medium nandos (I miss nandos..). It also was a reminder to me that I would be eating many different things in China - here I tried dried ducks blood, which, whether it was because I knew what it was before eating it or not, was disgusting! Dried blood aside, it was a tasty meal and I was happy that I could experience hot pot.
