every time you reblog Jane and the Dragon things I get the strongest sense of nostalgia? but in a weird unspecific way bc it was a show I super loved and was aggressively into for a while, but I was a bab who had no concept of TV schedules so I don't even know how much of it I saw. mostly I remember printing colouring pages off the website, and scouring FFNet for Pepper/Rake (bc I've been an embarrassingly diehard romantic since birth or something I guess, and they were an OTP)
aww
Yeah they’re a pretty decent ship. I like that Rake was basically an agoraphobic garden hermit who memorized the layout of the yard and Pepper is almost always in the kitchen and is very serious about seasoning and also how all her swear words are just like “you biscuit weevil!” and all her praise is like “that’s lovely as linen” aughh
I watched that series on the Youtube after seeing it on Boomerang or something, with my sis, @xala and it gives me a lil nostalgia too. It’s sad that weird animation choices (motion capture CGI) happen to good scripts. But Jane is an awesome chara and I wish they did more with it bc it was very limited bc of the animation and they rarely left the castle. You should liveblog an ep sometime! I like your opinions. Be warned though, this is one of those shows that instantly gives you the urge to re-draw some life into the characters.
“I’ve made someone else. I mean, I’ve met someone else, who I made...”
“It’s complicated.”
♪ That’s cre-a-tive.
your giving such a weird nostalgia right now with mission hill and home movies because those are shows that I literally only ever saw as a kid when I had tried to stay up really late in the summer and then flipped channels on the tv and i would see these and not understand them but still watch a little bit like this is too weird
B^) I hope that’s a good thing! Ahh man that sounds so cathartic-yet-confusing. Sweet
I used to watch Mission Hill and Home Movies on adult swim and dug them a lot, I reallly related with Brendon Small even though a lot of the humour/references of the show went over my head.
Since Mission Hill has a lot more visual comedy/ aesthetic distraction I would just watch it cause I loved the animation which sometimes went super smooth and sometimes erratic and sometimes goddamn Hanna Barbara dotted-line eye beams and pull whistle sound FX.
Also even though MH failed because of being too niche audience it really gave me a nostalgic 90s off-beat bohemian feel that made me think of the peeps I grew up around.
The appeal of Home Movies was almost 100% in the improv comedy even though the squigglevision animation grew on you, we had freaking 8 year olds talking in a sandbox and making rock operas about Kafka and I bought it! A kid being friends with a football coach/dysfunctional father figure [now voicing the somehow functional Bob Belcher] and at the same time everything was still soft around the edges and there was symbolism too like damn.
Sigh.
I like when people draw ladies w/ distinctive facial features e.g actual noses, and guys with lips [western animation tends to only emphasize lips/eyelashes if a character is wearing lipstick/is female which works sometimes but when it comes to characters of colour the effect can be a disservice]
Another thing that's weird is how all characters hands are drawn the same colour all over, another trope that seems to have been extrapolated from drawing white characters, because brown people's palms tend to be paler than the rest of the hand, although it could be an attempt to avoid the caricature-ish feel of like Mammy Two Shoes of Tom n Jerry... although modern Black directed cartoons like the animated TV show of Friday make it look real good.
Also there are actual cartoons that seem to break rule number one re: skin-tone and just make characters of colour look like greyer versions of the white cast.
Exaggerated sexual dimorphism is not a fave of mine either cause it's occasionally distracting to be like 'damn his crotch lines up with her ankles' and I'm lookin @ you, Total Drama. They have a pleasing style that gets knocked a lot because it's all 2D angular Canadian-y and the first season had some questionable colour schemes buuut they do have some damn diversity of shape, race, and style even though the general hourglass-ness of the girls is detrimental IMO like Sadie's unrealistically long/slender legs, Leshawna's skinny waist and Gwen's torso being narrower than her eyes. It can be stiff but it works for the high action/stunt/dialogue driven-ness of the show, though it's not as righteous for the softer moments.
Detentionaire characters have weirdly long necks and I love it and I don't even notice anymore cause it's across the board. Their hands get strangely detailed in close-up but it works for the vibe of the show, because in general looking closer will show you things. The texture and languid-ness of the forms of the backgroundies competes with the simpler-looking, non-pencil drawn, flash-animated-ness of the main characters even though they have more interesting [and quite diverse] designs. The animators put a lot of effort into giving everyone a different walk-cycle and movement style, like just look how animatedly and almost hyper Cam is, how Biffy carries himself self-conscious of how much space he occupies [ducking when he runs], Holger's emotive gesticulations, Brandy's posing and Tina's alternating calm and aggression. And Lee being the most still [facially expressive] when he's not forced to evade and fight.
Honestly I could go on forever but I'll stop there for now hmu if you have any character design/ animation pet-peeves.
