Well, this was unexpected. Galaxie 500 is releasing a 2 LP behemoth - including many unreleased gems from between 1988-1990.

There's not a lot to add to this except that the two songs here rock more than I was expecting. I mean this is Dean, Damon and Naomi. This is pre-Luna Dean Wareham. And this clearly influenced by The Velvet Underground and The Dream Syndicate.

This release is housed in a mock TMOQ sleeve.

[Spotify ‘data alchemist’ Glenn] McDonald explained to [Damon] Krukowski that the Autoplay feature actually cues up music that “resembles” what you’ve just been listening to, based on a series of sonic signifiers too complex to describe.

In this case, “Strange” had been algorithmically determined to sound similar to a lot of other music, and was frequently being Autoplayed to the point that it took on a life of its own, and eventually eclipsed the band’s other tracks. It continues to do so to this day... “‘Strange’ is a touch faster, louder, with a more regular backbeat and a more predictable song structure than most Galaxie 500 songs,” Krukowski pointed out on his blog. “Might an unintended result of Autoplay, then, be the separating out and rewarding of the most ‘normal’ songs in each band’s catalogue…?

Reading this, I couldn’t even recall Galaxie 500′s “Strange” and had to dig it up -- and could immediately hear Krukowski’s point to such a degree I didn’t want to listen to the whole thing. There was suddenly this creepy feeling like it might as well have been Oasis.

It ain’t essential Galaxie 500 listening. Most essential to me? “Tugboat” B-side “King of Spain” -- Part One as it were, not the later “Part Two” album track.

As is taught in elementary schools across the United States these days, GALAXIE 500 broke up in 1991 around the same time as the Soviet Union. In the 30 years since Jimmy Johnson wrote this fuckin’ record review, a few things have happened:

DEAN WAREHAM formed LUNA in 1991, who wrapped up activities in 2005, but then reformed around 2015. The band will be touring the USA and Canada in 2020!

Dean also consolidated forces with ex-Luna bandmate Britta Phillips for DEAN & BRITTA. One of the things they do is write soundtracks for well regarded movies like The Squid and the Whale. Dean can be found in 2019 at deanwareham.com.

GALAXIE 500 drummer DAMON KRUKOWSKI and bassist NAOMI YANG joined with FRR heroes WAYNE ROGERS and KATE BIGGAR to form MAGIC HOUR (1993-1996), but have made excellent dream pie recordings as DAMON & NAOMI since 1992. They also operate Exact Change Press, which “...publishes books of experimental literature with an emphasis on Surrealism, Dada, Pataphysics, and other nineteenth and twentieth century avant-garde art movements.”

Today can be found in 2019 at the Galaxie 500 bandcamp page, among other places.
