I just read “What doesn’t kill you makes you Blacker” by @damonyoungvsb . Hilariously and poignantly, Damon Young illustrates what his life was like growing up in Pittsburgh. . The book and Young are unapologetically black. Each essay tells a story, but also relates it back to his blackness. White people are hardly mentioned. Even as minor characters in his life. Even when he talks about when he wrote an essay responding to a woman’s essay, arguing that women need to protect themselves better, he carves our a special portion to describe how this hurt the black women in his life. And apologize to them. It’s not racist (it can’t be). But it’s not even biased. It’s beautiful. When he writes about how excited to learn who Barack Obama’s wife was back In 2004, discovering she was a black woman. . He just loves his blackness. But he also talks a lot about the anxiety and neuroses he’s developed over the years, as a result of growing up as a black man in America. It’s like when @issarae was asked at an awards show who are you rooting for and replied “everybody black”. It’s just fucking beautiful solidarity. . But what I loved the most about the book, is how much it speaks to the shared human experience. His anxiety, shame, issues with dating, money troubles, conflict with parents, is something we can all relate to. . I am not saying that I know what his life is like or what it’s like to be black. Only that there is so much that connects us. Reading stories like this are important to remember how much we have in common, which is a powerful tool against racism/sexism/hatred of any kind. And also that pain is the most single most commonly shared experience. Sometimes it’s fucking terrible and sometimes it can be made into a humorous essay years after.
