I’m starting to grow fond of indie games that are taking over 3 years to develop. At that point you know it’s a true passion project if the updates keep on coming.
Chasm is one such game, conceived in 2012, funded on Kickstarter in 2013 and estimated to be released in 2014 at the time (hehehe, we all know how this story goes … the team just hit Alpha stage now (2017) with gameplay being done from start to finish). Even though I expect the close-to-$200k raised must have dried up by now, the team keeps on going. So much time has passed they even changed the company name: from Discord to Bit Kid (I wonder if the rise of a popular chat platform had anything to do with it).
Anyway, speaking of the team, two legends of the pixel art scene are contributing to the visuals: Dan Fessler (of HD Index Painting and Pixelation.org fame) joins Tony Redmer in pixeling the environments, while Glauber ‘Unseven’ Kotaki (of Duelyst fame) does the animations.
There haven’t been any new trailers for the game, so here’s some more recent gameplay, although the Polygon guys make it look like it’s a game about destroying lamps. It sure looks amazing though.
I made a quick sketch of a bob-omb while trying out this genius technique by Dan Fessler for quickly painting pixel art using standard Photoshop tools.
