Song Review(s): Grateful Dead - “The Other One” -> “I Need a Miracle” (Live, Oct. 1, 1988)
“The Other One” rolled gently out of “Space,” slowly morphing from pure improv into song proper. But it never really left its primordial birthing grounds behind - this “TOO” is loose. Weird. Full of the sounds of laser death rays and gremlin effects on Bob Weir’s voice.
Always an aural changling, “The Other One” as performed Oct. 1, 1988, in California and out as Grateful Dead’s latest “All the Years Live” video, is unique. What could be perceived as sloppy can just as easily be heard and seen as the band, on the cusp of another creative peak, taking chances with one of the oldest songs in its canon.
And while tighter, unrelenting iterations are preferable, this “Other One” is a must-hear.
“I Need a Miracle” follows. Weir is still getting the Dan Healy treatment at the mic and Jerry Garcia’s voice, as on the preceding, is still roached, though his fingers are in good working order, as are those of keyboardist Brent Mydland and bassist Phil Lesh.

Song Review: Grateful Dead - “The Other One” (Live, July 10, 1990)
For five minutes on July 10, 1990, Dan Healy was the most-adventurous Dead man.
Healy wasn’t on stage with the Gratefuls for “the Other One” as bassist Phil Lesh played his famous rolling intro; drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann drove with polyrhythmic propulsion; and guitarist Jerry Garcia offered spidery leads and added nifty MIDI effects. But sound man Healy, who fucked with Bob Weir’s voice via delays and echoes and coated the band’s work in extra-musical sounds, was the one who made this “Other One” another thing entirely.
It’s short. But super-intense. Which may explain why the folks at GDHQ pulled this North Carolinian specimen out of the vault for the latest “All the Years Live” installment.

Song Review: Grateful Dead - "Estimated Prophet" (Live, July 8, 1990)
Of the Brent Mydland-era Grateful Dead shows Sound Bites saw in 1990, Pittsburgh is remembered as the weakest of the lot.
Now, this, of course, is a relative thing, as the Dead had been on a hot streak since early 1989. But even the most searing heat cools at some point and this was the case at Three Rivers Stadium on July 8, 1990, despite some terrific moments and a fun opening set by Crosby, Stills and Nash.
"Estimated Prophet" from that show is now out as the latest installment of the Dead's "All the Years Live" video series and it confirms the blog's recollections of a relatively tepid performance. This is far from bad. The tune is wobbly and wonky as "Estimated" should be and Weir's gonzo performance on the screaming-as-singing vocal outro, where he clutches his mic like a real crooner and Dan Healy adds delirious echo effects to the mix, is a delight.
But it's a testament to the Grateful Dead's power in '89 and '90 that this comes off as a fairly tame rendition from a fairly tame show from a time when the Grateful Dead were as feral as they ever were in the last half of their career.

Dan Healy didn't just mix the Grateful Dead's live sound. He invented the taper section.
A designated area at every concert where fans could set up recording equipment and tape the show — with the band's blessing. That decision created the largest unofficial archive of live music in history. Thousands of shows. Tens of thousands of tapes. All circulated through a mail-trading network that predated the internet by two decades.
When Archive.org launched the Live Music Archive, the Dead's tapes were the foundation.
