Sherlock & Daughter (2025— ) 1.04: For Kith and Kin
Lmao?????
Hell hath no fury like Amelia Rojas
Gifs made not by me but a mysterious benefactor
Was "Wylie" really the best unsuspect alias Dan Moriarty could have come up with. He really said G'day my name is Michael McManipulate and I have a normal amount of interest in your employer Sherlock Holmes, let's make out about it. Himbo antagonist of the year
Do you guys think Sherlock & Daughter will get renewed cause even if I said that the show was generic, we were left off on a cliff-hanger and I seriously cannot survive another show without a proper ending being cancelled...
Sherlock & Daughter Review
Rating: 5.5/10
Starring: David Thewlis, Blu Hunt, Joe Klocek, Fiona Glascott, Gia Hunter, Aidan McArdle, etc.
Synopsis: In 1896, Sherlock Holmes has found himself unable to solve certain cases as he is being threatened by a criminal syndicate who have kidnapped his closest friends. However, after young American Amelia Rojas comes to him, claiming to potentially be his daughter, they join forces to solve a global conspiracy, solve Amelia's mother's murder, and find out if she really is Sherlock's daughter.
General Review
Honestly, mid.
I'll admit that I didn't go into this with high expectations. I mean, Sherlock with a daughter? Sounds like a 2010's Wattpad fanfic.
The show isn't awful. I definitely did find myself enjoying it. However, I just think that this show is just... generic. Compared to other Sherlock Holmes adaptations, nothing about this besides the daughter aspect stands out - and that's not even that interesting, to be honest. It just feels like another mystery drama that has the Sherlock IP attached to it.
Acting isn't awful. I particularly liked the performances of David, Blu, Fiona and Joe. I really think they stood out compared to everyone else. Nobody was particularly awful. With the script they were given, they all did the best that they could do.
Characters
Sherlock: Decent. I think David gives a great performance as Sherlock, especially considering the high expectations for the role (Sherlock is an iconic character). I think he does come off as a bit mean at times, but I think it makes sense regarding his situation in the show. He had great chemistry with Blu and if the show doesn't get renewed, I hope they can work together again on another project.
Amelia: Fun. Quite falling into the "I'm not like the other girls" stereotype, but Blu does a great job at giving Amelia depth. However, sometimes her character seems inconsistent with the show's time period, which takes me out a bit. Not Blu's fault, obviously. That's all on the script writers. Other than that, she was really good. Her chemistry with Joe is especially really good and I really enjoyed their dynamic.
Dan: I do love Joe Klocek and he was such a standout. He has good chemistry with Blu. However, I don't really like Dan being a surprise villain. Making him an activist who is then revealed to want a war feels so weird and is such a waste of his character. What were the writers trying to do? You establish an interesting dynamic between him and Amelia, establish that he wants to help marginalised communities, only to go throw it out the window to make him a villain. Why? Because he's Moriarty's son? Doesn't make much sense.
Clara: Really forgettable. While Gia's performance is good, all I really remember about Clara is that she orchestrated her own kidnapping for her "boyfriend" who then turned on her. After that, she's just... there. Her friendship with Amelia really lacked and I didn't feel a connection between them. It sucks, because Clara had a lot of potential, but was just not fleshed out enough.
Lady Violet: Lowkey one of the best written characters. Fiona gives such a convincing performance as a villain. She just stole the spotlight every time she was on screen. Lady Violet was just so insane. Kind of sad that she's dead cause there's no character this show can introduce in a potential season two that can ever live up to her.
Ambassador Anderson: Just like his daughter, he's forgettable. Didn't even surprise me that he was involved in the Red Thread cause these crime dramas really love pulling that exact plot-twist. Honestly, while the show can't exactly remove him cause of the plot, I really don't feel interested in his character. If he died in season 2, I probably wouldn't care.
Professor Moriarty: 10/10 performance from Dougray Scott. I kind of like how he was kind of helping Sherlock solve the case (though we know his motives behind it lol). One of more entertaining aspects from the series.
Detective Swann: FORGETTABLE. Is he meant to be a love interest for Amelia? Cause they do not have any chemistry. Fine, he helped out and all in the end, but I genuinely do not care about his character. If he just didn't exist, I wouldn't even bat an eye.
What Season Two Needs To Improve On
Figure out its audience: This is such a common critique regarding the show and I agree. I feel like the show doesn't exactly know who it's for. Sure, we know it's based off Sherlock Holmes, but who is the exact audience? What's the ideal age range that should be watching the show? I honestly don't know who the show was made for. It feels like it's made for teens, but it also seems to want to be for adults, too, making it quite confusing.
Properly promote the show: Do you guys want to know how I know this show exists? Because of Jude Morgan-Collie - an actor from AGGGTM, who's not even involved with this show. If he had not reposted about the show on his story, I would not even know this show even came out. There needs to be better promotion from the network because most Sherlock fans are probably not even aware that this show exists. And if it does get cancelled, it'll be because nobody knew about the show.
Don't be afraid to take risks: Another common critique I've seen about the show is that it lacks with originality. Sure, the concept of Sherlock having an American daughter is original, but that's as far as the show goes. Besides the daughter plot-line, nothing else stood out about this show. The mystery was predictable, which made me feel bored at times. For season two, the show needs to be taking risks and not be afraid in doing so. I think, with how the show ended off, this could be a sign for an interesting story in season two, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Conclusion
I don't hate this show. I think it's enjoyable. However, I wouldn't say you need to go watch it immediately, because you're not missing out on anything major. It's fun, but just didn't use its full potential.
