Half A Cup - First Winter

Sometimes you’re not in the mood for a full cup of tea. You’re in a hurry; you’re not that thirsty. When it comes to games, sometimes you can’t give them an entire review complete with a full set of terrible jokes. But you still want to say something. So you pour Half A Cup.

The threat of a total nuclear apocalypse never seems to be far from the news. The latter half of the twentieth century is where it shone the brightest, but it seems every time a threat to the world is talked about, the promise of nukes hangs just on the edge of the conversation. Still, at least they haven’t been actually fired. Yet. First Winter, as you can probably tell from the name, pushes this nuclear threat right into the forefront and in doing so creates an unsettling little horror game, with an ending that seeks to make everything my fault.

First Winter begins in your eighties apartment, with eighties posters on the wall. Pretty sure one of them was for Rambo. As you go about your eighties life, your music is interrupted with a radio broadcast. The damn Russians are at it again and one of their nuclear submarines is ‘Provocatively Close’, meaning one more step and its grounds for war. And nukes. With that lovely threat laid down, the music kicks back in for a while before a sudden power cut. You open your front door and… now you’re in a bunker.

First Winter plays heavily on the warped architecture gimmick that Layers of Fear made strong use of. Rooms change on you when you’re not looking. Not just that, the whole setting flicks between a nuclear bunker and an abandoned submarine. It’s where a lot of the creepy atmosphere comes from as it’s impossible to predict what’s behind each door in the first run. The ambient noises, and the cassette tapes that warble vague advice at you, kept the hairs up on my neck the whole run. Couple that with some of the more subtle designs (there’s a lot of bodies draped in sheets following you) and you have something quite spooky. It all ends with you in the control room of the submarine; the last occupant having set the timer before blowing his brains out.

It’s a little short, as games go, which is kind of disappointing. It handles its main gimmick well and I would’ve liked to spend a bit more time in each of its main locales. That said, it means it never really wears out the changing room gimmicks like Layers of Fear quickly does. It doesn’t fall into cheesiness either, bar a strange jumpscare around the middle mark. You open and door and receive a bullet to the face for seemingly no reason. Still, it’s an intriguing little horror game that takes a good idea and works it until it’s done. First Winter has a few things to say on that overarching threat of nuclear destruction and it does it in a smart and unsettling way.
