GRYFFINDOR: “Love isn’t brains, children, it’s blood. Blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love’s bitch, but at least I’m man enough to admit it.” --Dan Vebber (Spike: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Lovers Walk)
360° Tracking shot + Betrayal Since neither the same writer nor director worked on both episodes, I'm wondering what torture artist decided that these two moments should mirror each other.
"Lovers Walk" (1998) written by Dan Vebber directed by David Semel
"The Wish" (1998) written by Mari Noxon directed by David Greenwalt
You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love 'til it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other until it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Love isn't brains, children, it's blood — blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it.

Spike in "Lovers Walk", Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3, Episode 8 (Written by Dan Vebber)
The Zeppo: Now That's What I Call Meta
If you don't understand that The Zeppo's entire point is to make fun of the usual dramatic occurrences in Buffy by visiting them from an outside perspective? I don't know what to tell you. The point of the episode to pull back the curtain a little. The point is to get you to realize how RIDICULOUS the universe is by intensifying everything. Like, OF COURSE the hell mouth is going to reopen. OF COURSE the demon within has grown larger and more powerful. OF COURSE Buffy and Angel must tearfully hash out their emotional problems. OF COURSE there are three female demons, vicious beyond all reason, wreaking havoc. OF COURSE criminals are raising each other from their graves and PLANTING BOMBS and RUNNING AROUND LIKE IN A BENNY HILL SKETCH.
It takes the dramatic -- which the show normally embraces -- and turns it into farce. Instead of the revelation that the monster from the hell mouth as grown being an intense moment, it's side-splitting! The camera dramatically zooms in on Giles's face and then in the background you just see Xander flailing as he sprints by the library door. It's absurdity. It's intelligent and self-referencing and BRILLIANT.
Xander tries and fails to implement heroic Buffy-like puns. Faith and Xander randomly decide to go at it and their cliche "steamy, romantic" sex scene is abruptly ended, not by pillow talk, cuddling, and professions of undying love, but by Faith THROWING XANDER OUT ON THE STREET SO SHE CAN TAKE A SHOWER. The episode takes all of the tropes that Buffy perfected AND INVERTS THEM IN A SINGLE EPISODE. THAT IS TV WRITING AT ITS FINEST.
Not to mention, the meta doesn't become masturbatory, as it is so wont to do. The episode, while laughing at itself, also manages to develop a longstanding side character in a creative new way! Xander is normally the comic relief and occasionally a little shithead. So you put him center-stage, throw everything you can at the guy, and watch as he defies expectations and rises to the challenge -- all while remaining in character and gut-busting. It's genius. The timing, the editing, the writing, the acting -- all completely and utterly on par.
The thing that kills me is that Dan Vebber, who wrote the episode and my other favorite Buffy episode so far (Lover's Walk), ONLY WROTE THOSE TWO EPISODES AND NO OTHERS.
DAMMIT DAN. DAN, COMEBACK. I LOVE YOU.
