D and AD Research
The reason I chose to do this project (even though it can be quite limiting) It’s due to the fact, I want to become an animator/ illustrator. Thus, I started tertiary research. This includes checking out what the show-room video appears.
It is not too colorful, but the graphics is commendable, the direction of the camera allows watchers to immersed themselves in. From the airplane coming forward to the sound (imagine being in the cinema).
Thus, I decided to animate and not just present images. As animating takes time. I will not be doing any additional interactive work.
I watched animations. From ones on TikTok (content creators) to proper animation studios. Below are some that I watched. Both 2D and 3D.
As I enjoy listening to music, I watched an animated video -
There was not a lot of movement, and the color palette matched the eerie
Klaus
It is a child’s movie about Christmas. Well one can tell from the name.
Jesper, a selfish postman, is forced to relocate to Smeerensburg by his father. However, he joins hands with a reclusive toymaker, Klaus, to spread joy in the dark and dreary town.
Sergio Pablos
It is both 2D and 3D. This is because of the director wanting the movie to be lifelike even though it was initially hand-drawn or some elements to it. The layers being stacked up, gives a feel of the environment. With the use of light and texturing, the 2D animation became like 3D. Also, to save time, some 3D models were used. For instance, the reindeer, which was obvious.
A lot of thought was put into the directing of the movie. The warm light is being used to illustrate social concepts. Any scene Jesper is found doing evil, he is always in the darkness.
It fascinated me but as 3D is not my area of expertise, I left the idea of doing such magnificent work. As 3D allows for 360 models, it would have been nice.
Avatar the way of water.
The director of avatar, is known for his way with mass water. He also directed Titanic back in the day. In the first avatar movie, the water isn’t known to be as life-like as the second. This is due to the fact technology isn’t as advanced to replicate the natural movement of water. Thus, the cast needed to dive.
As this is an IMAX movie, I chose to do research on it.
The director also wanted viewers to be one with the environment, just as he is with the oceans. Now, this showed me I needed to primary research on my case study and observe it. (The oceans being natural, I need to visit the beach in my city)
Reflecting this on my practice, the fascinating color scheme in avatar caught my attention too.
Include reddit.
Collecting data, I posted on reddit where to visit Bournemouth and why people watch imax. Surprisingly, people responded to both questions.
Below are screenshots of the responses.
Ideate
Wanted to do background of the directors. Initially, after reading the background of IMAX, the story was meant to be a silent one of the creation of imax. Unfortunately, I re-read the brief and realized that couldn’t be.
Thus, I wanted to create my own world in which viewers have an overview of the scene. Not just a part of the world.
Golden city
Personally, I like gold. The aesthetic of being rich. The aesthetic of liquid dripping down (gold preferably). That is my reason to create elderoda (city of gold) . In this city, there is no poverty because everything is gold.
After digging, it’s found in the end, Elderoda is a prince and not a city of gold. The reason being is he wore a lot of gold (obviously)
I guess that’s why I adore gold.
However, during the tutorial, Sally advised me gold is a precious metal so.... In the end, I should focus on the environment in sight.
I did research on my nearby environment. The beaches and gardens. I’ve already done research on the Bournemouth gardens. However, my main subject study is nature as I plan to animate it.
Later, the idea of cyber punk came into my mind as I typed this. I realized I am a fan of technology advancement more than nature. Okay that sounds bad, what I mean is I like tech.
The problem with that idea is sound. Now, the brief does say sound is not necessary but again I want to obtain the full imax experience. Or try to.
