Sri Lankan Classical Dance.

Under 3 main Classical Dances in Sri Lanka which are Upper Country Dance(Kandyan Dance/Udarata Natum), Low Country Dance(Pahatharata Natum) and Sabaragamuwa Dance( Sabaragamuwa Natum). Low Country Dance is one of my favourites which I chose to create my headdress with a little bit of a spice including some cultural things. Kolam is one of the main low country dance which is like a drama performance. Kolam was very popular during 1800 - 1950 since it fulfill all entertainment requirement of the people while addressing to spiritual aspects. Kolam Dance has special masks which the dancers use to perform. Where I got the idea to dance play my headdress(we still do dance with headdresses almost in every classical dance)

These are Kolam Dances. There are few Kolam Dances which has different stories to each.

Kolam dance looks scary when the dancers are with the masks especially in the way they perform. Though that's entertainment I feel scary too being a Sri Lankan.

Project Statement (Update)

Two months ago I came to college and the first thing I was told to do a mind map for the theme 'Play'. As a little girl what I always had enjoyed was Fashion and Dance. This is what my family tells me now. So for the project I chose was Dance Play.

As per the theme, I had worked with 2D,3D and few Digital that I could express my Traditional Dance and Culture. I learnt many things that I always wanted to learn and explore the art. I loved working 3D the most, because I enjoy making 3D objects which can be more creative and can add more interesting ideas which seems real.

I enjoyed the whole semester working in the Studios and the Workshops although I was late to start the semester. I am happy about myself for the amount of work I've done in this little time period.

Artist Research

Late Kalaguru Tukkawadu Gunadasa.

Kalaguru Tukkawadu Gunadasa was a veteran Dancer of Traditional Kolam Drama and well known Traditional Kolam Mask Maker in Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka. The art of Mask Making is concentrated among few families who reside Ambalangoba Area. This craftsmanship has been passed from generations to generations. He is the major fact that I was inspired to work on my headdress as per my previous post. All his masks had the definition of low country art.

This mask right here inspired me to do my headdress in my own way. This is the Maha Sammatha King and Queen masks who lived 11 trillion years BP.

Now you might think why didn't I do masks?! Yes I didn't, because everyone can get inspired by someone do the same but I thought getting inspired from something and creating something else will be interesting than doing the same thing.

Theme of Play

The word 'Play' is a word which brings you joy, as the word itself is soo playful. When I first heard and taught to work on the theme play, which came to my mind was "Dance Play" which also can be called how dance plays in a life.

My project is all about me. Who I am, what I do, where I'm from and everything else about me.

As the start of the theme, I thought of bringing out the happiest thing which I always enjoy the most is Dance. It is and also will be about my tradition and culture which will be interesting to all others when its about something out of their culture.
