Any tips for someone who can't take dance class currently? I have dance experience, we took ballet in gymnastics and i took a few classes a few years ago and i dance in theatre and show choir but i have no way to really learn more technique and stuff. I wanna improve my dance skills is there anything i can do on my own time?
Hi!
There are so many different skills and styles involved in dance. Sadly, there’s no overnight fix for being a good dancer. So I’ll leave with a few recommendations, otherwise I could go on for hours.
I don’t really recommend doing barre work or technique work on your own, unless you’ve already built up technique with the guidance of a teacher. Otherwise, you could form really bad habits and/or injure yourself, which will be a waste of time and hurt you in the long run. If you have studied technique recently and are looking to continue that, check out Kathryn Morgan’s youtube channel - she posts tons of barre and center exercises for ballet dancers. Ballet is the style I highly, highly recommend for anyone interested in dance or improving technique… It gives you an irreplaceable basis of body awareness, technique, strength, flexibility, and musicality.
If you haven’t studied technique recently, you could try cross-training, which will help you build strength for dancing in the future. Here’s a link to my favorite pilates youtuber - she posts tons of workouts you can follow along with. Here’s some of the benefits of pilates for dancers, I highly recommend it! If pilates isn’t your thing, here’s a list of 120 stretches and strengthening exercises. It’s divided into sections, so each one focuses on one part of the body. I can’t emphasize how important it is to work on flexibility along with strengthening, so definitely check out that link.
Good luck! Hope this helps!
