I’m finally reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn which is set in the early 20th century, and there is this truly phenomenal exchange where the fifteen-year-old narrator buys herself sexy lingerie and shows it to her mother

and hopefully asks her mother if it’s slutty

and her mother is like, “man, if prostitutes wore this instead of long underwear they’d get pneumonia”

and the narrator is like “aren’t you just so mad at me for buying this”

and the mom is just like, “honey everyone goes through a slutty phase.”
