Name Meaning: Dandakaranya Reptile
First Described: 1982
Described By: Yadagiri
Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides
Dandakosaurus is an interesting crappy theropod that was found in the Kota Formation of India, living from the Hettangian to Pliensbachian ages of the Early Jurassic, approximately sometime between 200 and 182 million years ago. It is only known from part of the pubis, but this itself is interesting - it appears to have a vertical pubis, rather than forward facing like in the “Saurischian” hip type, or reverse facing as in the “Ornithischian” hip type. It cannot be very well classified beyond, perhaps, a theropod closely related to the Megalosauroids; however, it could have interesting implications on the evolution of the dinosaur pubis, given that “Ornithischian” hip types evolved multiple times within the group.
