Hey! I used to study historical swordplay (and taught for 3ish years) and it makes me SO HAPPY that you are studying different kinds of swords (there are a lot of swords, even within the confines of the western european medieval era) for the sake of accuracy. It just. I'm so happy to see lady knights and girl squires and ladies being awesome whether or not they wield swords. Anyway your art is awesome and you are awesome and I look forward to all your art!
That’s so cool! I’m glad you’re enjoying my work! I endeavour to only break history in the “that’s cool!” way not the “that’s moronic they’d totally just get themselves killed” way! (Except Nobility I have this fun idea they strap weird bits of armour on themselves, like a single pauldron, to look tough and cool and the real fighters are sniggering. Same way high end fashion works now only a bit more metal bits…)
I’m a bit of a history nut myself (as if you couldn’t tell) but I’ve always been more focussed on the clothing aspect, starting with what women wore, and more lately men’s clothing and armours.
I like to know what I can break I guess.
I’ve never actually looked into the fighting style or the weaponry (beyond like… this is a sword, this is an axe etc) and it wasn’t until I started drawing a scene in which Serafina has a sword fighting bout that I went “huh.. I know jack all about how actual sword fights work outside a context of TV. Film and Video Games”
Since I’ve started with history with the armours and costumes why screw it up with the fight styles? I mean I can’t be 100% accurate, it’s not my life’s study, and this world is a psuedo historical one where I have plans to mess about with the reality of history, but better to start with a solid base of knowledge as opposed to my previous knowledge base. which was “A sword is a cross shape and you swing it about a bit!”
The whole project isn’t meant to be all about complete polished comics (though hopefully there will be some) but also a place for me to explore this kind of research and share the work I make.
But certainly it’ll be about the Lady Knights! Swinging their hopefully more accurate swords!
If there’s any resources you can reccomend (esp visual ones, reading doesn’t help much lol) please do message them to me!!
