A plan to abandon the city hall committee system that Guelph has always used barely survived Monday, with a motion to go to the next stage of planning approved on a tight 7-6 vote.

The approval means city staff will now work on details for converting to a committee-of-the-whole system on Sept. 1. Under this system, all 13 council members would sit on a committee that considers most items of business before they go to council for a final decision.

A report on these details is to come back to council in June for approval.

Currently, council gets recommendations from five-member standing committees, each consisting of four ward councillors and the mayor. Councillors who aren’t members of particular committee can participate in meetings of that committee, but only to a limited degree.

Guelph has a high rate of civic engagement and volunteerism because we like our city and want to participate in making it better ... Don’t take this away.
