Daniel Alvarez
This my favorite band right now. they sound super grunge, you should definitely give them a listen.
Hello True Tail Fans!
Our second posting of Fan Art comes from Daniel Alvarez, who decided to draw a teenage Caleb on the cover of his own comic book! (The map of Splitpaw behind him is a nice touch). Great job!
Much Love,
Allison & Zach
Can't stop thinking about Daniel Alvarez and the ingenuity of him incorporating Q&A into his set.
Alvarez, who uses a wheelchair, plays with social conventions throughout his comedy. Funny dude, good-natured humor. Early jokes set the table, soothe (unfortunately common) conditioned tension to seeing a comedian with a disability.
Specifically opening up a comedy set to the audience, being affable enough to encourage (and receive) their tipsy jeers, is a gambit. Alvarez has to prove, in a fraction of his allotted time, that the audience can ask anything. The audience has to prove, despite discomfort or social mores, that they can satisfy the request with their genuine curiosity (or their most intrusive thoughts).
What results is a brilliant conceit: an interactive way to deliver established material or to shoot an off the cuff observation. For Alvarez, there's no telling which inquiries will inspire which response. For the uniformed, it's no telling which responses are improvised or canned. For those who investigate, who can note the craft or see the seams, it ultimately doesn't matter.
The measured chaos envelops artist and audience in a communal spirit. Something is "happening" in a Daniel Alvarez set. Anything is possible. It's magic.
