In short, the Decalogue ("10 Commandments") charges heads of households to be covenantally committed to YHWH, their households, and their neighbors, so that they will resist seeking their own advantage at others' expenses and will always seek others' interests above their own. This is why Jesus can distill this document to two commands: 'You shall demonstrate love for YHWH you God with all your heart and with all your being and with all your resources,' and 'You shall demonstrate love for your neighbor as yourself.'
