A/N: Fic number two! There is way too litle Daniel content on this platform. Please enjoy!
He was glad to have you back home again. It had been hard for him having you away at college while he was stuck at home. He had no job, no papers and nothing to do without you here. Ever since the two of you met in highschool, you had always been the smart one. It was no wonder you went to college. You were always the one passing tests without studying too hard, the one that was always on top of her game. It was why you met in the first place. Daniel was failing algebra hard, not once had he passed a test, until the teacher had asked you to tutor him. The hour of tutoring after school turned into late nights at the library and getting kicked out by the librarian for staying too long. You helped him pass algebra and in return you got a life long friend. Late nights at the library turned into hangouts that turned into sleepovers. The two of you were like two pea’s in a pod.
It wasn’t like he wasn’t proud of you, he was extremely proud of you. His best friend, you, majoring in neuroscience. Every time you told him about a class you passed, or a research proposal that got approved he cheered with you. It had just been a little hard not having you near the last few weeks. Allie basically broke up with him, his grandma went missing for a day and he felt like a complete failure. Daniel needed you more than ever but you were busy with school. He would never blame you for not having enough time to reply to his texts or pick up when he called. You both lived seperate lives now, he had seen the Instagram stories with your new friends. It stung a little, but it was fine, he was fine. You were here now, even it was for a few days.
“Thanks for picking me up Danny.” You dragged your suitcase over the doorstep to your childhood home. It was just like how you remembered. The photo’s were still arranged the exact same way, a sense of familiarity in the mess that was in the living room. After months of studying, writing and reading it was good to be back. It was even better to see Daniel. You felt guilty for not being there for him and you had missed him terribly.
“It’s fine Y/N. It is good to have you back, this town isn’t the same without you.” He smiled and sounded genuinely happy. Clumsily he helped you drag your other bags inside. Both your parents happened to be on vacation while you were back home, a miscommunication that had you ranting to Daniel for hours. Daniel was secretly quite glad about this arrangement, it ment he could stay at your house the entire two weeks you were home. You never turned him down when he asked to sleep over, you wouldn’t this time either.
“You sound just like a cowboy.” You chuckled softly. “Only instead of the town not being big enough for both of us, the town is big enough for both us.” With an exhausted sigh you sat down on the couch. “Do you mind staying tonight? It feels weird being in a house this big alone.” It was like you read his mind. He joined you on the couch, as soon as he did you leaned your head against his shoulder. Being around him felt good, it felt comfortable and right.
“Yeah sure, only because you asked nicely.” He teases. If he was honest he would walk on thumbthacks for you if you asked him nicely. It was something that had always annoyed Allie. Often the two of them would fight about how Daniel was always talking about you. He knew she was right and that his friendship with you was different than with his other female friends, he just couldn’t help himself.
“Is your grandma okay? I mean from what you told me she went on quite a journey.” You lifted your head from his shoulder to look at him.
“Yeah she is fine. I think it was actually good for her in a weird way.” He chuckled and shook his head. “This guy Ben, you remember Ben right, she has been hanging out with him a lot. ” He told you.
“I am glad she is alright. Would be a waste to see that sassy old lady go so soon.” You looked a him and got up. “Come on, let's get these upstairs.” Softly, you kicked the suitcases on the floor.
Your bedroom was exactly how you left it. All your trophies lined up, degrees on the wall and of course, your photos with Daniel. For a moment you just stood there, so many memories. You had grown out of this version of you. When did that happen?
Daniel quickly burst you out of your thought bubble by placing his hand on your shoulder. “Getting sentimental now, Y/N.” His eyes found yours, a teasing look in them.
“Oh shut up.” You playfully gave him a push. “It’s weird. For years this was my bedroom, now I just feel like a guest.” You lifted one of your suitcases on the bed to open it. “This is going to take forever to unpack.” Sifting through your clothes you realised just how many pairs of socks you brought.
“Did you pack for a trip to Mount Everest or something.” He watched over your shoulder. “And who needs that many socks.”
“Obviously, I do. You never know when the sockthief might strike.” You laughed as you placed your laptop on your desk. “I need to finish his proposal. Do you mind waiting?”
It stung, but he wouldn't tell you that. Of course you were busy with school, when weren't you? “Yeah sure.” His voice betrayed his dissapointment.
“I swear once I am done I have surprise for you Daniel.” You smirked as you grabbed your laptop and placed it on your desk.
“Really now? Thats a deal.” He fell down on your bed.
Daniel had nothing to do but scroll on his phone while you were busy typing away. With no job or school most of his afternoon's were spend like this. In bed, doomscrolling. He ended up Allie's Instagram, she seemed so happy. With a sigh he looked at the photos. You had taken notice and grabbed his phone.
“Hey!” He shot up to take back his phone.
“Stop looking at her page. This way you’re never getting over her Danny.” You close Instagram and throw his phone back on the bed.
“We didn’t break up, we’re just on a break.” He corrected you. Allie had been there for him while you were away, filling the hole you left behind in his life.
“You need to get your mind off it.” You stood up from the chair, closing your laptop. Finally, you were finished. “I have just the thing to help you with that.” With a grin you walk to one of your many bags, digging through some stuff until you pulled out a little tube. It had a joint inside. Danny didn't know you smoked? What did they do to you at that school?
“You smoke?” He asked you with a tone that made it seem like he didn’t believe you. You were a good girl, never stepped out of line.
“No, of course not!” You said defensively. Just because you didn’t like breaking rules didn’t mean you didn’t like to let loose sometimes. Slowly you got closer to him. “I just.. thought it would be fun to try with you?” You titled your head, a playful half-smile on your face. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”
Danny hesitated for a moment. He had smoked weed before, but that was a few years ago. The problem was that he always spoke his mind when he was intoxicated and spilling his guts to you on the first day didn’t sound that smart to him. He watched you plop down next to him while you were still holding the joint. “Alright.” He gave in, he was never one to deny you.
A few minutes later the two of you were sitting on the old leather couch in the basement. You feared that the smell would stay in your room if you smoked the joint upstairs and you knew for a fact that your parents would kill you if they found out. With your leg tucked under you and your body facing Daniel. The joint was pressed between your lips as he lit it for you. You took a deep inhale and as soon as the smoke hit your lungs you started coughing. A silent ‘oh fuck’ left your lips as you passed it to him.
“Oh so you weren’t lying about never having done this before.” Daniel teased you before also taking a hit. He did it with a little more grace than you, the smoke leaving his mouth as he tilted his head back.
“You look like a dragon when you do that.” You laugh as you snatch the joint back. With a lot less coughing you took another hit, and then another and another. Before you could take a fourth he took it out of your hands.
“Quit hogging it, you’re gonna get sick like that.”
The joint lasted quite a few rounds and both of you were now plastered on the couch. The saying ‘as high as a kite’ suddenly made sense to you. With heavy eyes you looked at Daniel. Sweet Daniel. He had always been kind to you. You still remember the first time you met him. His stupid grin had dethawded your cold behaviour towards him within the first tutoring session. You missed this, missed him. You hadn’t been a good friend the last few months, you knew that, but you hoped these few weeks would make it up to him. Oh sweet Daniel. Your hand had found it’s way to his thigh as you softly brushed your thumb against him. It wasn’t your intention for it to be a sexual gesture, you enjoyed touching people when you were intoxicated. For you it was nice way to feel connected. But the longer your hand lingered on his thigh, the hotter your skin felt.
Daniel knew that you enjoyed having contact. He knew that very well. It didn’t stop his dick from getting hard from the soft and gentle movement of your fingers. The weed had removed all filters in his mind so he just blurted out. “You’re gonna give me boner if you keep doing that.”
It took a few seconds before the words hit you. “Sorry, this weed has me horny ‘n shit.” You lifted your hand to rub your eyes. He watched you silently. Really, he tried to have some self control but your words had effect on him. Deep down he knew he two of you had always been more than just friends, Allie was just a distraction because he knew he wanted you. But being with you felt like tying you down with him. With no degrees or job he would just be a bother. He would hold you back when all hewanted was to see you soar. In the fog of his high, his lips found yours. And to his surprise you kissed him back.
It was a slow and sloppy kiss. You crawled onto his lap as your hands we’re already trying to take of your shirt. The dial went from 0 to a 100 quickly. Never being one to take things slow you were half naked grinding down on his hard-on. One of his hands was on your shoulder brushing away your hair, the other groping a boob. You reached for the waistband of his sweatpants. The thought of having sex with Danny had been on your mind a few times, more times than you liked to admit, but you never thought you would end up actually fucking him.
“You sure ‘bout this.” Your lips were on his neck as you slurred your words.
Daniel couldn't think straight. “Yes.. yes please just..” He squinted his eyes shut as you pulled his dick out. More words than that weren’t needed. You gave him a few pumps before looking at him.
“Condom.” You muttered suddenly, getting off his lap to desperately search for one. He sat there. His legs slightly spread, breathless, his boner on full display and mind clouded from the weed. Once you found one you climbed back onto his lap. You ripped it open with your teeth and slowly rolled it onto him. Without waiting another second you lowered your wet pussy onto him, feeling him deep inside you and fulling you up so nicely. It had been a while since you had a good fuck.
Daniel groaned, god you clenched so thightly around him. It felt like his head was going to explode. His hands found it’s way to your hips and held them as you slowly rocked. “Missed you so much..” He mumbled softly against your neck. After months you were finally here again.
You pressed your lips against his once more. The pace was sloppy, the sex was messy. Lewd sounds filled the basement. In his haze Daniel started to ramble. “Everything has just been so hard without you. I am such a failure and you’re so..” He panted as you nibbled his earlobe. “So great.” He groaned.
“Hey Daniel?” You paused for a moment and smiled. “Shut the fuck up okay?” With a swift moment you pushed him down on the couch as you sat up straight, the leather was cold against his skin.
“You’re such an amazing person.” While saying the words you could feel him twitching inside you. Is this what he was into? You leaned forward and pulled his shirt up to his chest, planting kisses on his stomach. “And you’re so talented and funny.” A whine left his mouth as he curled his hands gently in your hair. “And so loving and kind.” It didn’t surprise you that he had a praise kink and you were happy to give into his desires.
You straightened your back again and lead his hand to your breast again. His touch tingled against your skin, you should definitely have more sex while high. With another thrust of your hips you threw your head back. The sight alone had Daniel nearly bursting. “Fuck.. I’m gonna cum.”
“I know. ” You threw you head forward and with half-lidded eyes you stared down at him. He couldn’t stop himself from spilling all inside the condom from the sheer confidence you said those words with. Damn you truely were perfect. With a loud groan he came and sent you over the edge as well. Your orgasm hit you like a brick wall making you almost collapse forward.
You laid on his chest for a moment, just catching you breath in silence. His arm wrapped around you, holding you close. The only sound was the two of you panting.
“I meant what I said Daniel.” Eventually you break the silence. You wanted him to know you cared. “I am sorry I haven’t been as present in your life as I should be.”
Daniel was certainly surprised. “Hey it’s okay, you’re here now aren’t you?” He gave your arm a squeeze. “Maybe I should drive to your dorm every once in a while too.”
“You’d do that for me?” You turn to look him in the eye. The smile that you loved so much greeted you back.
“Of course. When have I ever told you no.” He chuckled. You laid back again. Laying there with him felt right. This is what you wanted, who you wanted. It had always been him but you were just to busy to wrap your head around that. So smart and yet still so dumb.
“I do need your help with a favor tho.”
“With what?”
“Do you know how to get your ID replaced?”

Fem!Reader x Daniel Markowitz
Warnings: Fluff, Fem!Reader, Lovey Dovey Valentine's Day Shit, Flowers, Reader works at a Bakery, Reader and Danny are Roommates, I guess Friends to Lovers? If you squint
Word Count: 1000
this was written for @fredhechingerfrenzy for the valentine's day mini pop-up event! prompt i chose was "flowers" and really i just wanted an excuse to write some danny fluff so enjoy! also huge thank you to @romantic-genocide + @fortunatelyhauntedblackcherry + @smallratboy for reading this over! <3
Valentine's Day was just another stupid day. A stupid Hallmark holiday that thrived off of consumerism and emotions. It made those in relationships more annoying and those single more sad. There was no in between—people either loved the holiday or hated it. And unfortunately for your-single-and-never-able-to-find-love-self, you hated it.
You hated everything about February 14th, and working at a bakery just made the shitty holiday drag on. Tons of people came in during the morning rush, looking for the best treat to get the love of their life! And during that rush, you stood behind the counter with a fake smile on your face giving opinions on baked goods while wanting to scream in the walk-in cooler at the top of your lungs. The day dragged on with more customers needing something sweet for their lover, more heart shaped donuts that needed that annoyingly bright pink frosting and heart shaped sprinkles added to them and more couples snuggling up to each other in the booths, sharing sweet treats and sweeter words.
When the clock finally struck five, you were the first one to grab your personal belongings and the extra donuts before sprinting to you car to get home and spend time with your best friend, Danny. The two of you had been best friends since childhood and both sucked at the whole romance and relationships thing. This holiday in particular was one that made you both just want to order some pizza, watch horror movies and fall asleep on the couch together while ranting about your past love attempts… and that was exactly what you had planned to do when you got home.
On the way to your car, your phone buzzed with a message from Danny.
Dans!: hey gorg, i hope work went well! i ordered us some pizza and cheesy bread, should be here when you get home! :) also happy shitty hallmark holiday that makes people spend way to much on chocolates and teddy bears. i grabbed some wine from the store, and that new horror movie you've been wanting to watch is now streaming! i'll see you and your pretty face home soon, okay? <3
You smiled at his text, your face flushing red at it and his words. Danny was always a flirt, a natural one who didn't know how to use those skills when he needed it, but he always meant well. Always. It's just that sometimes his words got you a bit more flustered than you wanted to admit.
You: hey! work was ok, i guess. i was able to snag some of your favorite donuts, though! you know… the custard filled ones with chocolate frosting!! just that today they're shaped like little hearts… gross. anyways, i'll be home soon, okay? can't wait to just have some pizza, wine and sit back to watch a movie with you
You texted him back quickly, before starting your short trip back to your shared apartment.
During the entire drive your heart was pounding with anticipation, nervousness and excitement. For some reason, these chill and fun nights alone with Danny always made you smile uncontrollably and your heart flutter with longing and desire.
The nights when you would be seated beside each other on the couch, thighs touching or legs tangled over each other as you shared that handmade quilt his grandma had made for him. The nights when your hands would brush against each other, the feeling of skin on skin electric as you both took the time to pull away. The nights when you just wished he would lean in and finally close the distance and kiss you like there was no tomorrow, finally confessing all of the feelings and emotions that you both held so deep and hidden from the other. The nights when the lingering looks you shared as you both went off to your respected bedrooms meant more, and you were in turn making your way to his room with him or he was making his way to your room with you. The nights when you wished you were waking up beside him the next morning.
You fumbled with your keys, struggling to unlock the front door of your apartment with a sigh. The day just could not end soon enough. After pushing the door open and stepping inside, you were met with the scent of pizza and also freshly baked cookies. Of course, Danny always got those little break and bake sugar cookies every time he went to the store.
"Hey! How was work?" Danny asked, carefully retrieving some items from your hands.
"It was work," you sighed, smiling at him. "How was your day?"
"Oh, the same old. Visited grandma, ran to the store, you know. All of the fun things I usually do in my spare time. Pizza is on the counter, wine is poured in glasses. Why don't you go change and I'll start the movie?"
"You're the best, truly." You smiled, retreating to your bedroom to change. When you opened the door, you were instantly caught off guard as a vase of various colored roses sat on your dresser. The red, pink and white roses were arranged perfectly in a vase, a small card with your name on it sitting in front.
You picked the card up carefully, opening it before reading the contents inside. Danny's messy and slanted handwriting sat there, staring back at you.
"I know it's nothing huge, but you deserve something nice on Valentine's Day. I saw these flowers and thought of you—they're so pretty, like you. I hope you enjoy them and they make you smile and make your day brighter. Because that's what you do to me."
You closed the card, holding it close to your chest as a smile formed on your face. You shuffled back to the kitchen, watching Danny make you both plates of food from the doorway.
Maybe Valentine's Day wasn't so bad after all, at least, not with Danny by your side.

BEST FRIENDS | DANIEL MARKOWITZ
summary: danny has always been your best friend.
cw: fluff, anxiety, sexual joke at the end, kissing
The chipped mug warmed your hands, a small comfort against the hollowness that had taken root in your chest. Rain lashed against the windowpane of Danny’s small apartment, mirroring the storm brewing inside you. Another one bites the dust, you thought with a bitter laugh that didn't quite reach your eyes. Mark had been… well, Mark had been Mark. Charming on the surface, but ultimately shallow and unwilling to truly see you. The breakup had been messy, punctuated by his bewildered protests that you were “overreacting” to his blatant flirtation with the waitress.
Danny had been your rock through it all, as he always was. He’d answered your tearful call at midnight without a hint of annoyance, offering his couch and a steady supply of bad television and even worse jokes. Now, a few days later, the initial rawness had faded, leaving behind a dull ache and a weariness that settled deep in your bones.
“Rough day?” Danny’s voice was soft, pulling you from your thoughts. He settled onto the worn armchair opposite the couch, a half-eaten sandwich in his hand.
You managed a weak smile. “You could say that. I just… I don’t get it, Danny. What is wrong with me? Why does this keep happening?” The question hung in the air, heavy with years of accumulated disappointment.
Danny set his sandwich down on the small table beside him, his gaze serious. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. You’re… you’re amazing.” He stumbled slightly over the last word, a faint blush dusting his cheeks.
You scoffed, the sound devoid of humor. “Amazing at picking the wrong guys, apparently.”
He leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “Look, those guys… they were idiots. They didn’t see what was right in front of them.” His eyes met yours, and there was a sincerity in them that made your heart flutter despite yourself.
A comfortable silence settled between you, interrupted only by the drumming of the rain. You watched Danny, the way the lamplight caught the slight wave in his blonde hair, the familiar curve of his lips when he was deep in thought. You’d known Danny since forever, practically. You’d navigated awkward teenage dances, celebrated small victories, and weathered countless heartbreaks – mostly yours – by each other’s sides. He was a constant, a safe harbor in the often-turbulent waters of your life.
“You know,” Danny said after a while, his voice low, “if we were dating, I’d take you to all the best places.”
Your eyebrows shot up, a genuine flicker of surprise breaking through the gloom. “Oh yeah? Like where?”
A small, hopeful smile touched his lips. “Well, first, there’s this little Italian place downtown, Marco’s. They make the most incredible pasta carbonara you’ve ever tasted. And then, there’s that overlook on Route 17, the one where you can see the whole coastline? The sunsets there are unreal.” He was warming to the subject, his eyes sparkling with an enthusiasm you hadn’t seen in a while. “And we’d have to go to that quirky little bookstore with the hidden café, the one with the mismatched chairs and the owner who always recommends the weirdest books. You’d love it.”
He continued, painting a picture with his words of cozy dinners, breathtaking views, and hidden gems. You found yourself smiling, a genuine smile this time, as you imagined these outings. They sounded… nice. Simple, thoughtful, real. Everything your recent relationships hadn’t been.
As his voice trailed off, a playful challenge bubbled up within you. “So, what’s stopping you?”
Danny’s eyes widened, a look of utter surprise washing over his face. He blinked a few times, as if he hadn’t quite processed your words. “Excuse me?”
You leaned back against the cushions, a newfound boldness stirring within you. “You said, ‘if we were dating, I’d take you to all the best places.’ Well, we’re not not dating. So, what’s stopping you from taking me?”
The silence that followed was thick with unspoken words and years of suppressed feelings. Danny’s gaze was intense, searching yours, as if trying to decipher if you were serious. You held his gaze, a nervous flutter in your stomach but a determined glint in your eyes.
He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Are… are you serious?”
You nodded slowly. “Yeah, Danny. I think I am.”
A slow smile spread across his face, chasing away the surprise and replacing it with a warmth that made your chest ache in a completely different way. “Wow.” He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous energy suddenly radiating from him. “Wow. Okay.”
He stood up abruptly, pacing the small living room. “Okay, best places. Right. Well, we should definitely start with Marco’s. I can make a reservation for tonight. Or tomorrow? Tonight? Yeah, tonight. Tonight’s good.” He was rambling slightly, a charmingly flustered look on his face.
You chuckled, the sound light and genuine. “Tonight sounds perfect.”
He stopped pacing and looked at you, his smile widening. “Perfect. So… this is a date?”
“I think,” you said, meeting his gaze steadily, “this is a date.”
The air crackled with a new kind of energy, a shift in the dynamic you’d shared for so long. It was exhilarating and terrifying all at once. You’d always felt comfortable with Danny, safe. But this… this was different. This was stepping into uncharted territory, a territory you’d secretly longed to explore for years.
Over the next few weeks, Danny made good on his promise. He took you to Marco’s, where the carbonara was indeed heavenly and the conversation flowed easily. You stood hand-in-hand at the Route 17 overlook, the setting sun painting the sky in vibrant hues, a comfortable warmth spreading through you as Danny’s fingers intertwined with yours. You spent an afternoon lost in the quirky bookstore, discovering hidden literary treasures and sharing slices of surprisingly delicious lemon cake in the hidden café.
Each outing was a revelation. You saw Danny in a new light, not just as your steadfast friend, but as someone who saw you, truly saw you, with a depth and appreciation that had been missing in your past relationships. He noticed the small things – the way your eyes lit up when you talked about your passion for photography, the way you hummed along to the radio in the car, the way you always ordered your coffee with an extra shot of espresso. He listened intently, his gaze unwavering, making you feel like the most important person in the world.
There were moments of awkwardness, of course. The tentative brush of hands, the lingering gazes that held unspoken questions, the nervous laughter that filled the spaces between words. But beneath it all was a genuine connection, a foundation of years of friendship that made navigating these new waters feel less daunting.
One rainy Saturday, you found yourselves back at Danny’s apartment, curled up on the couch watching an old movie. The rain pattered softly against the window, a soothing soundtrack to the comfortable silence that had settled between you. Your head rested on Danny’s shoulder, his arm draped loosely around you.
“You know,” you said softly, breaking the silence, “you were right. These are the best places.”
Danny’s fingers tightened gently on your arm. “They’re only the best because I’m sharing them with you, sweets.”
You lifted your head to look at him, your heart swelling with a warmth that had nothing to do with the blankets draped around you. His eyes were soft, filled with a tenderness that made your breath catch in your throat.
“Danny,” you began, unsure of what you wanted to say but knowing you needed to say something.
He leaned in, his forehead resting against yours. “I’ve wanted to do this for so long,” he whispered, his voice husky.
And then he kissed you.
It wasn’t a dramatic, movie-worthy kiss, but it was perfect. It was soft and hesitant at first, then grew in confidence, a silent acknowledgment of years of unspoken feelings finally finding their voice. When you pulled apart, a breathless smile touched both your lips.
“So,” you said, your voice a little shaky, “what’s next on the ‘best places’ tour?”
Danny’s smile widened, a genuine, heart-melting smile that made your stomach flip. “Well,” he said, his eyes sparkling with mischief, “there’s this one place… it’s kind of private.”
He leaned in again, and you knew, with a certainty that settled deep in your soul, that this was just the beginning of finding all the best places, together. The rain outside had stopped, and a sliver of sunlight peeked through the clouds, painting the small apartment in a warm, hopeful glow. For the first time in a long time, you felt a sense of peace, a sense of belonging. You were finally where you were meant to be.

➺ summary. When Danny's parents ask the pair of you to rake up the leaves in the backyard, a sudden downpour forces you out of your clothes and into some of Danny's.
“Oh, you’re so goin’ down!” you exclaimed, mashing the buttons on the controller in your hands.
“Not if I take you out first!” Danny countered, catching the tip of his tongue between his teeth as his thumb moved deftly over the joystick.
“Daniel!”
Just as he was about to land the killing blow, a shout from downstairs broke his concentration just long enough for you to evade his attack and counter, stealing the win.
“HA! I won!” you cried, throwing your arms in the air in victory.
“Oh c’mon, that’s not fair! I was distracted!” Danny exclaimed, dropping his controller to the floor and reluctantly getting to his feet to lean out his bedroom door. “Whaaaat?” “Daniel, did you rake up the leaves in the backyard yet?” his dad called from the bottom of the stairs.
“No, not yet!” he shouted back.
“Well, it’s supposed to rain within the next hour and your mother wants it done before they get wet.”
“They’re harder to rake when they're all matted down!” Gail chimed in and Danny let out an exasperated groan.
“Can’t it wait? My girlfriend is here!” he protested.
“Daniel, this is your responsibility—” Alan exclaimed, gearing up for a lecture when his mom cut in.
“Why doesn’t she help you? Then you could get it done in half the time.”
“I don’t mind,” you exclaimed, joining Danny in the hall.
“See, she doesn’t mind!” Gail replied as if that settled it and you had to stifle a laugh at the way Danny rolled his eyes.
“C’mon, it’ll be fun,” you insisted, grabbing his hand and tugging him down the stairs.
“There’s gloves in the garage, next to the rakes,” Alan said as you passed to put your shoes on.
“Thanks Mr. Markowitz!” you called.
Out in the garage, Danny let out a loud sigh as he tugged on a pair of gardening gloves and grabbed a rake.
“Aw, what’s with that face?” you teased, pulling open the door to the backyard, and your boyfriend shot you a flat look.
“This isn’t exactly what I had in mind for us today, that’s all,” he mumbled, pushing his hair out of his eyes.
“Don’t worry, we’ll end up in your bed with a movie on in no time,” you assured him, kissing the pout from his face before pushing him out the door.
Outside, the sun shone brightly despite the chill October air, and several more orange tinted leaves drifted down from the nearly bare branches above.
“At least it’s warm in the sun,” you pointed out cheerfully, heading toward the far side of the yard to start raking near the fence. “Why don’t you start on the opposite side and we can meet in the middle,” you suggested, directing Daniel where to start.
“You actually seem like you’re enjoying this,” he said, raking a little more haphazardly than you, missing swaths of leaves here and there.
“I am,” you laughed, starting a small leaf pile. “I used to help my grandma rake her yard every year. It reminds me of her,” you explained, smiling softly despite the bittersweet pang of grief that came with the memory.
Danny paused to watch you, leaning against the handle of his rake.
“I bet she really enjoyed that,” he said, sharing your smile, and your chest tightened with affection.
The sky slowly darkened as you worked, and you had to pause to wipe the sheen of sweat from your face, glad for the wind that had picked up, stirring a few leaves from your piles. You’d pretty much finished your side–raking all the smaller piles you’d made into one large one–but when you turned to check Daniel’s progress, you found him still working.
“You’re not done yet?” you teased, sauntering over.
“I’m almost there!” he exclaimed, grinning as he launched several leaves at you with his rake.
“Hey!” you cried, feigning indignance, holding your hands up to shield your face. “Daniel Alexander!”
Danny merely snorted and flung more leaves your way.
“Oh, now you’re really asking for it!” you exclaimed and Danny let out a playful yelp as you took off after him, chasing him across the yard.
“Yeah? What’re you gunna do about it?” he laughed, taunting you as he rounded the tree and turned the tables on you, now chasing you, instead of the other way round.
Instead of an answer, a shriek of laughter left your lungs as he tackled you to the ground, landing atop the leaf pile.
“Now you’re the one in trouble,” Danny chuckled, tickling your sides till you were breathless with laughter, the leaves crunching beneath you as you struggled.
“Uncle! Uncle!” you cried, squirming beneath him, and he finally relented, though he still held you pinned.
For a moment you both lay panting, holding each other’s gaze as you caught your breath, neither noticing the dark clouds that had rolled in, now obscuring the sun overhead.
“I love you,” Danny murmured, pushing his hair from his face before he leaned in to kiss you, his lips parting to taste you and his tongue met yours briefly before you kissed him back deeper, humming into his mouth as you snaked your arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
“I love you,” you replied, nudging his nose with yours and grinning against his lips, gasping when he parted your legs with your thigh to press against your core, his kisses turning heated.
“Your parents can’t see us, can they?” you asked breathlessly, laughter tinging your voice at the thought.
Daniel lifted his head to look through the sliding glass door into the living room.
“Nope. My dad’s back is to us and my mom’s focused on her laptop,” he replied, grinning down at you, a curtain of messy dirty blonde hair falling against your cheek. “Now where were we?” he mused, leaning back in.
Before his lips could find yours again, however, a fat rain drop landed square in the middle of your forehead and you blinked in surprise.
“Danny, I think—” The words were barely from your mouth before the patter of light rain turned to a deluge, soaking you both as you still struggled to get out of the leaves.
“Shit!” Daniel cried, pulling you to your feet and toward the garage, abandoning the rakes where they lay.
By the time you finally escaped the downpour, you were both thoroughly soaked through, your clothes clinging to you wetly, and Danny’s sopping hair plastered to his face. For a second you both stared at each other as you bent to catch your breath, only to dissolve into laughter moments later.
“Well, at least the leaves are raked,” you giggled, wiping the water from your eyes.
“Yeah, I guess so,” Danny agreed, shaking his head ruefully before pushing his dripping hair from his face. “C’mon, I'll get ya a towel and then we can get out of these wet clothes.”
“That sounds nice,” you murmured, starting to feel the chill.
Leaving your shoes by the door, you stripped off your damp socks and followed Danny inside.
“Hey guys, did you get the leaves finished before the rain started?” Alan asked, glancing up from the paper when you entered the room. As soon as he noticed your sopping state however, his brows raised and his lips gave an amused twitch.
“Not quite,” Danny replied wryly and his mom finally looked up from her laptop and snorted, fighting not to laugh.
“Well, at least you don’t have to worry about it anymore,” she said, managing to keep a straight face, only to share an amused look with her husband as you and Danny began to climb the stairs to his room. “Oh hon!” she called as you neared the top. “Make sure not to drip all over the hardwood.”
“I won’t!” Danny called back and you grinned at the exasperation in his voice.
Stopping at the small closet in the hall, he grabbed a couple towels and handed you one. “If you wanna get out of your clothes, I’ll put them in the dryer,” he said, rubbing the towel over his head to dry his drenched hair and you couldn’t help but let out a soft snort.
“No, I thought I’d just keep them on,” you joked, drying your hair as well before gripping the hem of your shirt and peeling it up and over your head, finding Daniel watching you once you were freed from the soaked garment.
“What?” you asked, a small grin playing at your lips.
“Nothing,” he murmured, his cheeks flushing slightly. “Am I not allowed to admire my girlfriend?” he asked with a grin, pulling his own t-shirt over his head. “No, you’re allowed,” you replied, biting your lip softly at the sight of his bare chest and soft tummy. “As long as you don’t mind me checking you out,” you teased gently.
“I suppose that’s alright,” Danny chuckled, though his face flushed darker and he ducked his head as he unbuttoned his jeans.
You smiled to yourself as you busied yourself with working your leggings down, finding his bashfulness endearing. Waiting till his gaze lifted, you reached behind you to unclasp your bra, letting it slide slowly down your shoulders before dropping it to the floor with the rest of your discarded clothes and Danny wet his lips as his eyes roamed your body.
“You’re so beautiful,” he breathed, awe in his voice and eyes, and you took a step closer, brushing your fingertips up his chest, relishing the way his muscles twitched and flexed beneath your touch.
“So are you,” you murmured, an impish smile curling your lips as you met his gaze. “You can touch me, you know,” you teased, pressing your palm to Danny’s chest, over his heart.
“I know,” he huffed lightly, wearing a hesitant grin.
Resting his hands at your hips, he slipped them up your back, pulling you against him. “This better?” he asked, caressing your shoulder blade with his thumb, and you nuzzled your face into the crook of his neck.
“Much,” you sighed, relishing the feel of his skin against yours, and you could feel the rumble of his chuckle vibrate through you. “I love you, Dans,” you whispered, your chest aching with affection and he squeezed you tighter, dropping his face to your shoulder.
“I love you too.”
For a long moment, you merely stayed that way, content in his comfortable embrace, but despite the warmth of his body against your, the chill in the air sent a shiver up your spine, pebbling your skin.
Danny felt you tremble and pulled back. “Shit, I should probably get you some dry clothes to wear,” he exclaimed, reluctantly releasing you to rummage through his dresser for an oversized sweater and a clean pair of boxer shorts. “This okay?” he asked, offering them to you.
“Yeah, that’s perfect,” you replied, pulling the thick sweater over your head before peeling off your underwear and pulling up Danny’s boxers, the blue plaid clashing with the busy design of his sweater.
While you dressed, Daniel did as well, putting on a pair of grey sweats and rumpled t-shirt he’d worn the night before.
“Thank you, babe,” you murmured, pulling the sweater’s collar up over your nose to snuggle into the soft fibers, finding it still smelled like Danny.
“No problem,” he replied, shaking his head with a fond grin at the sight of you in his clothes. “Get comfy and pick out a movie for us and I’ll be right back,” he said, gathering up all your wet clothes and the towels.
Once he left the room, you climbed into his unmade bed and pulled the covers over your legs, starting to feel warmer already. By the time Danny returned, you had a movie all queued up and ready to go.
“Oooh, you picked a good one,” he exclaimed, carefully shutting his door before joining you and pulling you into his arms, letting out a content sigh. “Y’know… I’ve been thinking,” he murmured hesitantly as the opening credits played.
“Yeah?” you prompted, shifting from the screen to look at him, resting your chin against his shoulder, a stray strand of his wavy hair tickling your cheek.
“Well… you know I’ve had this job for a couple months now and I’ve been saving…” he paused to wet his lips, his eyes studying your face nervously. “I think I have enough to split a deposit on an apartment, if you wanna, I dunno, maybe get a place together?”
No sooner was the question out of his mouth than the answer was on your tongue.
“Yes!” you cried, throwing your arms around his neck, a wide smile splitting your face. “Yes, I wanna get a place with you!”
A whoosh of air left his lips in relief and Danny grinned, wrapping his arms around your middle.
“Great! We can start looking at places tomorrow,” he suggested and you nodded, catching him by surprise with a fervent kiss.
Moaning as his tongue moved against yours, he rolled you to your back and leaned over you, his messy golden waves falling in a curtain against your cheek.
“When we get our own place, we won’t have to worry about your parents walking in on us,” you giggled, carding your fingers in his hair to tuck it behind his ear.
“Or having to be quiet,” Danny added, huffing a soft laugh, his lips brushing against your cheek and down your jaw as his hand snaked under your sweater to cover your breast, teasing your nipple with his finger and thumb as he sucked at your pulse point, drawing a soft whine from you.
“I think this was about where we were earlier when we were interrupted by the rain,” he mused, a mischievous light dancing in his blue eyes.
“You know, I think you’re right,” you murmured, grinning up at him and Danny leaned in to kiss you, exploring your mouth as if you had all the time in the world, the movie playing on in the background, forgotten.

Chapter 1
The weather in LA on this particular Thursday night is cool and slightly balmy. Your arms, exposed due to your blue halter dress, prickle with goosebumps. You watch as the last bit of sun dips down below the horizon, and a pang of anticipatory excitement blooms in your stomach.
You’re standing with your older sister, Iris, outside on the sidewalk in front of your apartment building while you wait for your uber to take you to a house party. You’re celebrating a recent promotion from intern to production assistant at ENews, and Iris is celebrating a night away from her fiance, Ben, who you also share an apartment with.
The timing couldn’t be better when your friend from college texted you earlier that day to invite you to a house party happening in a nearby neighborhood. Ever since graduating from college, you’ve worked your ass off to move up the ranks in Hollywood, and all you want is a night to celebrate and let loose.
When you arrive, the party is already in full swing.
“I’m way too sober for this,” you whine, stepping into the foyer of the large LA house. “I’m gonna go find a drink,” you tell Iris.
“Okay, I’m gonna find Megan,” she replies, and you two split off.
You wind your way through the crowded hallways, until you find the kitchen. Ever since your frontal cortex developed, your body decided to stop metabolizing hard liquors. You peruse the options - tequilas, vodkas, whiskeys, pre- mixed concoctions of who-knows-what's. Since it was a work night, you knew you’d need to stick to beer or seltzer if you were going to make it in on your first day at your new job.
You spot a cooler on the end of the bar and pop open the lid, all to find a pile of ice that has started melting. You frown and sigh.
“Dang, they ran out of beer already?” a guy next to you notes.
You sigh again. “It’s gonna be one of those nights, huh…”
The guy standing by you pauses to think for a second, drumming his fingers on the lid of the cooler.
“You know, I think they have another fridge outside on the patio. Wanna go check?” he asks you, hopefully.
You look at him for the first time, and see he is actually pretty cute. His head is topped with super messy, dirty blonde hair, and the lower half of his face is covered with a full copper colored beard. He squints his sparkling blue eyes while he waits for your response.
“Why not?” you reply, and he signals for you to follow him out into the back patio.
He finds the fridge and opens the door. Inside, are rows and rows of beers.
“Yay!” you exclaim, jumping onto the balls of your feet.
He laughs, handing you a beer, while grabbing one for himself.
“I guess my night has turned around,” you say to him.
“I’ll cheers to that,” you clink glasses. “I’m Danny by the way. How do you know Tyler?” he asks you.
You shake your head. “I don’t. My friend Megan invited me. Who’s Tyler?”
“He’s the older brother of one of my friends,” he explains.
“What does he do to have such a nice house?”
Danny rolls his eyes, “Some kind of crypto thing. He’s gone on and on about it before, but we’re all so sick of hearing about it. Anyways, what do you do?”
You go on to tell him all about your career journey, and how you’re celebrating your promotion. You stand and talk with him, and enjoy a few beers, before you know it you’re back inside and dancing to whatever Doja Cat remix is blasting through the speakers.
Your head buzzes, but you don’t care. You’re having so much fun dancing and laughing with Danny, Iris, and Megan (who have joined you now), plus a couple of Danny’s friends, and Tyler’s little brother, Tanner.
Tanner is shamelessly flirting with Iris. “She’s engaged,” you try to tell him.
“If you think that’s going to stop him from hitting on your sister, it’s not,” Danny says to you and you laugh.
“I’m always open to polyamory,” Tanner says.
“Oh really?” Iris jokes.
Iris turns to you. “Speaking of Ben, it's getting late. I kind of want to head back. Wanna call an uber?”
You look at your phone and can’t believe it's already 11. You know you should leave too, but you’re having too much fun with Danny, and you’re still way too buzzed. You know that if you go home now and try to go to bed, you’ll just have the spins and want to order pizza.
“Nah, you head back,” you tell her. “I’m gonna hang out a little longer.”
After another beer, your buzz has turned into full fledged intoxication.
“I just love your hair,” you say to Danny over the loud music. You reach out to push his hair slightly out of his eyes. “Do you use the product in it or something?”
He looks at you, somewhat bashfully. “Thanks, it’s all natural. Thank my Jewish ancestors!”
You throw your head back and laugh.
“Wanna come over?” you ask him bluntly.
He stares at you, flabbergasted. “Um… yes! Yes… I.. - I want to come over,” he stumbles over his words.
“Great! I can show you my audition tape!” you grab his hand and lead him out of the party.
The next morning
You stare at Danny’s sleeping form, in your bed, wrapped up in your pink floral sheets.
You take a sip of your coffee, and try to scrape together remnants of the night before. Images of the party, dancing, the uber ride home all run through your head.
You remember that you did have sex, but you can’t remember any real details. Before you could get too worried, you see a (used) condom lying next to the dresser. Phew. At least you’re safe in that regard.
You take another sip of your coffee, hoping the caffeine can erase the pounding in your head. You decide its time to wake him up by slightly tapping his shoulder with your finger.
“Danny,” you whisper.
Nothing. You tap harder.
“Danny?”
Nothing.
Now you shake his shoulder with a new-found sense of urgency.
“Not now, Mom,” he mumbles.
“What?”
“Okay, I’m getting up, Mo-” he turns over and sees you, in your business casual work clothes, mug in hand, staring down at him.
“Oh,” he says, rubbing his eyes. “Hey,”
“Hey…” you say back.
“What time is it?” he asks, squinting into the sun which shines through the curtains which you pulled back in an initial attempt to wake him up.
“7:30,” you reply.
“What are you doing? Let’s go back to bed,” he says.
You cross your arms. “I have work.”
“Oh. Right.”
“Don’t you have work?” you ask him.
He laughs, somewhat embarrassed. “No, uh… no work today.”
“Ah,” you say, still waiting for him to get up.
“Wanna get some breakfast?” he offers.
You smile. “I’ll never say no to breakfast.”
He puts on last night’s attire- a baggy white graphic tea, jeans, a blue cardigan, and his Nikes- before you both head into the kitchen where Iris and Ben are chatting over coffee.
“Oh hey, I’m Danny,” he says to Ben, while nodding at Iris.
“Ben,” says Ben, as he shakes Danny’s hand. “Ah, to be young,” he jokingly says to you, giving you a huge grin.
“Oh my god,” You half laugh and roll your eyes. You and Danny walk outside to your car.
You sit across Danny in the orange booths in the sunny, cozy diner that is around the corner from your office.
“Wow, I feel, like, terrible,” Danny says rubbing his temples.
“Me too,” you say, sipping your second coffee.
“Did you throw up?” he asks.
“Uhhh, no.”
“I did,” he admits. “I feel WAY better. Sometimes you just gotta throw up ya know?”
You purse your lips and nod slightly. Not the topic you want to be discussing while actively trying to feel better.
“So what do you do for work, anyway?” he asks, stirring copious amounts of cream and sugar into his mug.
“I work for E!… remember, I was out celebrating my promotion last night?”
Danny thinks for a second, and then replies, “Ohhh, uh, yeah! Right! E! The promotion, the promotion at E!”
You grin back. Nice cover. “And what about you? What do you do?” you ask him over a bite of pancake.
“Well, I’m sort of in between jobs right now,” he says, brushing his messy hair out of his face.
“Ah,” you nod.
“Yeah, I’m thinking about taking a couple of community college classes to get some more skills so I can apply for some better jobs. I’m sort of doing some random pet sitting here and there, especially for some of my grandma’s friends who are too old to walk their dogs anymore,” he explains. “It pays the bills, ya know. Not that I have many bills. I live at home right now.”
“Uhh, right,” you reply, starting to lose interest. He’s cute, yes, but you two have almost nothing in common. You notice you need to head out soon anyway, because you cannot risk being late on your first day. “Listen, Danny, it was so nice meeting you. I gotta leave for work soon, though,” you start to take out your wallet.
“Oh no no no, I got this,” he scrambles for his wallet.
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely. I like, never get to go out with beautiful, smart girls. Please, let me get this, it's the least I can do,” he sets down his credit card.
You feel a pang in your chest. Is it pity? Genuine gratitude for his sweetness? Guilt for brushing him off so quickly? Whatever it is, something clicks in you. You’re not sure what is going on, or what entity takes over your hand, when you decide to write down your number on the napkin on the table. You slide it over to him, before giving him a wave and walking out of the diner.
7 weeks later
You’re standing on the red carpet for the premier of the Fantastic Four: First Steps.
You’re standing with your E! News mic, dressed in a long gold, sequin dress. Your hair is professionally done, Pam Anderson style, in a 90s updo. You look hot. The problem is, under the LA sun, the lights, and Joseph Quinn staring right into your eyes and soul - you don’t FEEL so hot.
“So tell me, Joseph,” you say, “growing up, were you a big fan of the–” you stop and cover your mouth. You move your mic away as you feel a small belch coming up your throat. Panicked, you swallow it down as best you can. Drops of sweat roll down your back.
Joe looks at you concerned.
You clear your throat. “So sorry about that, can we take that again?” you ask the camera man, as well as Joe.
“It’s okay, please go on,” Joe says sincerely.
You get a thumbs up from the camera man.
You take a deep breath. “Tell me, Joe, were you a big fan of the comic books growing up?”
“No actually,” Joe begins to talk about getting the role and then something about finally reading the books, when you suddenly feel another belch coming up. You try to take some breaths, and imagine your stomach settling. Instead, a deep roll of nausea hits you this time.
Joe notices. “You okay, doll?” he asks in his british accent, hand going to your shoulder. You must look sick as hell if Joe is stopping the interview.
“Yeah, yeah, of course,” you try to get back on track, gulping down another belch. “Just, what about the comic books again? Just keep talking,” You nod at Joe as confidently as you can and try to breathe away the stomach ache.
“Yeah, so, like I said, I wasn’t really into them, but now that I did the research, I think they’re really amaz–”
This time a huge wave of nausea rolls over you, and you know you cannot stop the puke that is coming. You run behind the camera, to the nearest garbage can you can find, and puke your heart out.
The next morning at work
You watch the video back with your coworker, Finn, who is dying of laughter next to you.
“Come on, we gotta put this on TikTok,” he says trying to catch his breath from laughing.
You can’t help but laugh at yourself too. Especially after seeing the reactions of Joe and the other Fantastic Four cast members watching you puke your guts out.
You cover your face with your palms. “This is SO embarrassing! They’re never going to let me do interviews again,” you whine.
“Look how sweaty you are,” Finn points out. “You look like you just ran a marathon.” “Shut up,” you roll your eyes, but can’t help giggling. “Stop replaying it, I’m gonna throw up again,” you warn, gently smacking him on the arm.
“Ahhh I'm just messing around,” Finn says. “I’ll fix this no problem,” he says as he starts to edit the clip.
“Yeah, I guess maybe you can just edit this out, and we can use the interviews that Maya-” you start to say, when nausea hits you again.
You cover your mouth and gag, frantically looking for a garbage can.
“Whoa!” Finn says, “not on the equipment!” he grabs a can from under the desk and holds it out for you while you puke.
When you come up for air, he hands you a kleenex. “Dude. Are you okay?” he asks.
“Ughhhh,” you moan.
”What the hell is going on with you. Are you pregnant or something?”
Your face drops and you remember.
Danny.
That was what? Like 2 months ago? But you have had your period since then, right? You start to do the math. You had been so preoccupied with work and caught up with the Hollywood rat race, that you didn’t even pay any mind to the fact that you did miss your cycle the past month.
“Oh god,” you mutter.
But we used a condom. You’re positive. You remember seeing the used condom. So you’re fine! Unless, the condom was just…. There…. And you start to wonder what role the condom even played in your one night stand.
The rest of the work day drags on agonizingly slow. All you want to do is go home and tell Iris what is going on. Your older sister always knows what to do in these situations.
You both stare at the row of positive pregnancy tests littering the bathroom in your apartment.
“Shit, I don’t know what the hell to do,” Iris says. “Did I even meet this guy?”
You both walk out into your bedroom and sit cross-legged together on your bed.
“Yeah, yeah, he had like blondish, messy hair, thick beard…”
“The short one?” Iris asks.
“Yes,” you reply, pulling out your phone. “Here, he sent me this selfie of us from that night,” you also realize you never replied to him.
The photo is of you 2 in the middle of the dance floor at the house party. Danny is holding the camera out in front of you two. You are both grinning, huge, wide, goofy grins. You can’t help but smile at the photo as you look at it. That was the last time you felt truly care-free.
Iris isn’t as charmed.
“Oh,” she says in a flat voice.
“Come on, he’s cute,” you try to justify it.
“Oh god,” Iris says, realizing the weight of this reality. “What are you gonna do?”
“Ugh,” you say, flopping onto the bed and closing your eyes. “You’re supposed to tell ME what to do in these situations,” you remind her.
“Well, I guess you have to tell him,” she suggests.
“No way!” you shoot back up, sitting up straight.
“Yeah,” Iris says. “It’s the right thing to do, and you know it.”
You groan again, pulling up your text conversation (your very one sided text conversation, at that):
(March 3)
Danny: [Selfie Photo of you 2]
(March 4)
Danny: Hey!! It’s Danny by the way. Had so much fun the other night, would love to see you again!
(April 7)
You: Hey, Danny, how’s it going?
Danny: Oh hey!!! Pretty good, how about you?
You: Great. Do you think we can get together to talk?
Danny: Of course! How about the Perch, tomorrow, 8pm?
You: Can we make it 6?
Danny: Absolutely - It’s a date! :)
“This beats the diner, huh?” he asks you.
You’re sitting next to Danny at the Perch, a popular LA rooftop bar. You’d have to agree that it does beat the diner. Though, you hope he can actually afford it. Danny slowly sips a glass of wine, and doesn't bat an eye when you order iced tea with lemonade. Poor guy has no clue that you lured him here to drop a bomb. When you stare into his twinkling blue eyes, you just can’t muster the courage to tell him the truth. Not yet.
“So, I just thought we could get to know each other a bit better,” you suggest, sipping from the sugared rim of your tea, licking the sweet sugar crystals off your lips.
“For sure,” he replies. “What do you want to know?” he casually props one elbow up on the bar, and turns to you, all ears.
“Um, tell me about your family,” you say. Slowly ease into the topic.
“Oh, my family is the best,” he says with a big grin. “Sure, my mom can be a little much sometimes, but she’s a great woman and I love her so much. My dad can sometimes come down hard on me about the job thing, but hey, I’m trying my hardest,” he explains. You nod, listening.
“And my grandma also lives here, she lives at a community for older people. But i love visiting her. She’s like, one of my best friends. She gets into a lot of trouble, sometimes, but I’m so lucky to have her,” he says, smiling down at his wine.
It warms your heart to hear him talk about his family this way. You’ve hardly heard many guys be so open about their feelings like this, especially so early on.
“I think it’s sweet that you consider your grandma your friend,” you say.
“Well, its true!” he exclaims. “I mean i’ve got my own friends my age too, obviously, but sometimes they can be real dipshits.”
“I know what you mean,” you giggle.
“So, what about you? What’s your family like?”
Even though you had asked him first, you hadn’t really mentally prepared what you were going to say.
“It’s, a little, complicated,” you say.
He stares at you patiently and sincerely waiting for you to continue on. His presence and genuineness catches you slightly off guard, and you can’t help the misty feeling that sets over your eyes.
“Wow,” you say, “I didn’t think I was gonna cry….” your voice trials off.
“No, no, no, don’t even worry about it,” he says, “You don’t have to talk about it now if you don’t want to.”
You give a small smile and dab your eye with the thick fabric napkin. It’s not like you to cry easily, and you realize it must be your hormones. You guess this is as good a time as any to tell him.
“Danny, I really brought you here because I have something to tell you.”
“Oh! What is it?” His eyes go wide, eager, listening.
“So…. I’m…. pregnant.”
He stares at you blankly.
“With….. emotion?” he asks, he blinks his eyes a few times.
“With a baby,” you say. “Your baby.”
“What!” Danny exclaims, a few people at surrounding tables look at you. He lowers his voice and leans in closer to you. “What!?” he asks again.
“Yeah, I’m not sure how, but I took like 20 pregnancy tests and they were all positive. I’m not sure how this happened. I mean, we used a condom right?”
Danny looks to the side, thinking for a sec. “Oh wait, no we didn’t. You said not to.”
You sit back in your seat, physically taken aback by what he has revealed. Then you scoff loudly, as you feel your heart starting to race and blood rushing.
“What the fuck do you mean I told you not to?” Drunk or not, you would never tell someone not to use a condom! You try your best not to explode with anger.
He holds his hands out in front of him defensively. “Well, I- I was trying to put it on, but I was having a hard time and it was taking a while. Then, you said to me, ‘just do it already’,” he explains.
You smack the palm of your hand on your face, “‘Just do it already’ as in JUST PUT THE CONDOM ON YOUR DICK ALREADY!!” you have decided to give up on being quiet.
Danny rubs his hand down his mouth and jaw, “Oh shit.”
“Yeah, OH, SHIT!” you say.
You sit in silence for a little bit.
Danny says your name tenderly, “I am so sorry about this. I feel absolutely horrible,” he says, shrinking in on himself. “I’m such a fucking idiot.”
You start to feel a little bad at your reaction. It seems like it was a misunderstanding. A dumb one at that, but he clearly means no harm.
“Look, Danny,” you say, softening your tone. “I was also drunk, and making dumb decisions. These things…. They happen….”
Danny is still looking down at his lap. He swallows and sighs, shaking his head. “Still, I feel like this is all my fault. I am so sorry. What can I do? I’ll do anything to make it up to you.”
“Well, I have an OBGYN appointment on friday morning. You can come with me to that… if you want.”
“Of course, what time is the appointment?” he asks.
“10:30.”
"I'll pick you up at 10."
