Down with Love (2003)
This tongue-in-cheek parody of the early 60s films of Rock Hudson and Doris Day went under-appreciated on release, despite the delightful chemistry and gumption of era stars Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor (both never better) AND the comedic stylings of Gay Icons David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Paulson. It’s aged like a fine wine.
Director: Peyton Reed
Starring: Renée Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, Sarah Paulson, and David Hyde Pierce
Cinematographer: Jeff Cronenweth
Costume Designer: Daniel Orlandi
One Dress a Day Challenge
March: Pink Redux
Down with Love / Renee Zellweger as Barbara Novak
This dress with matching jacket is our introduction to the film's main character. The exaggerated white collar on this pink windowpane coat sets the tone for the stylized and slightly over-the-top comedy.
You can see in the closeup that it appears to be made of a textured woven fabric, with the smoother material of the dress's white top for contrast. The "pocket flaps" on the front of of the jacket appear to be merely decorative.
The designer, Daniel Orlandi, talks more about costumes for this film here. Below is his sketch for this outfit, along with fabric swatches.
