The nation of Britain was horrified by the abuse and murder of four-year-old Daniel Pelka, which raised many questions as to why his teachers did not intervene despite knowing that he was being abused at home. Daniel lived in Coventry, central England, with his Polish mother, Magdalena Luczak, and her boyfriend, Mariusz Krezolek. Magdalena had come to Britain in 2005 with her former partner and Daniel was born on the 15th of July, 2007. However, the following year, Magdalena and Daniel's father separated, and two years later, Mariusz entered the picture. Their relationship was tumultuous, to say the least. In August of 2010, police were called to their home following a violent altercation between Magdalena and Mariusz. She sustained a small cut from a knife and was choked into unconsciousness. Although Mariusz was drunk at the time, no charges were made against him. In early 2011, Daniel was taken to the hospital with a broken arm. During his stay, nurses noticed bruises on his arm, left shoulder, and lower stomach. They suspected that Daniel was being abused at home, and so the Children, Learning, and Young People Directorate were ordered to complete a Core Assessment of the family.
