E’ difficile immaginare come lo skateboard, elemento essenziale della cultura giovanile, stia diventando un fenomeno crescente in paesi come l’Ethiopia. Nel 2015, il fotografo berlinese Daniel Reiter visita il paese, per aiutare un suo amico a ritrovare la madre dopo 33 anni. Mentre sta facendo delle ricerche per il viaggio, s’imbatte in Ethiopia Skate, un’organizzazione no profit che sostiene i talenti locali dello skateboard. Da quel momento, Reiter si mette in contatto con il fondatore Abenezer Temesgen e i vari giovani di Addis Abeba, che sono coinvolti nel progetto. In poco tempo, si trova a documentare l’ambiente skate della città. Le sue fotografie rappresentano le speranze e i sogni dei giovani skater africani, facendo luce su questa meravigliosa sottocultura. Reiter afferma che “una delle cose più belle dello skateboard, è che riesce a mostrare, forse meglio di tanti altri sport, la forza di questi ragazzi […] E’ un mezzo per far vedere la passione e la grinta di questi skater.” Cliccando qua potete vedervi l’intero reportage. It’s hard to imagine that something as integral to youth culture as skateboarding is becoming a growing phenomenon in countries like Ethiopia. The Berlin photographer Daniel Reiter first visited the country in 2015, to support a friend who was meeting her mother for the first time in 33 years. While researching for his trip, he came across Ethiopia Skate, a non profit organisation championing local skate talent. From there, he connected with its founder Abenezer Temesgen and the local youngsters of Addis Ababa involved. In a short time, he found himself documenting the city’s skate life. His beautiful pictures represent the hopes and dreams of young african skaters, sheding light on this wondrous subculture. Reiter says: “one of the great things about skateboarding is how it illustrates – perhaps more so than other sports just – how strong and tough these kids are […] It’s an awesome way to show the passion and drive of these young skaters.” Watch this beautiful reportage here.
