DOCUMENTARY | BIARRITZ SURF GANG

Surfing in Biarritz, in the 1980s was wild: surfing was punk, surfers were outlaws. They had a thirst for pure thrill that could lead to the top of the world or directly into prison. Directed and written by two local surfers Pierre Denoyel and Nathan Curren, ‘Biarritz Surf Gang’ tells the unknown story of the six best European surfers of the 80s. The history of their greatness, decadence and their fall. It's also a story about how surfing changed from being a counterculture phenomenon to a high-performance sport it is nowadays. The setting in Biarritz, at La Grand Plage, the Super 8 archive footage and the crazy characters that to this day still rule the local scene make ‘Biarritz Surf Gang’ one of the outstanding documentaries of the genre. A lawless and unique moment in the 80s – enjoy.

PHOTOGRAPHY | TOSHIYUKI MAEDA: THE 80S MICRO PIRATE RADIO MOVEMENT IN JAPAN

Pirate radio was once the primary area of counterculture, contributing to the growth of rock, punk, hip hop, afrobeat, and even mainstream culture and politics. In the 1980s, Japan experienced a massive, or as it is sometimes called, a “micro” pirate radio movement. Countless radio stations that could only broadcast within walking distance appeared; they were deeply experimental, doing things like hanging microphones from the ceiling or making portable radio stations by putting their equipment on bicycles. FM Koenji, KIDS, Boss-FM, Two & A Half, IBS-FM, Radio Home Run and others had a certain “local” and “DIY” aesthetic, with the use of self-published papers, stylized verification cards, and some even experimented with “cassette magazines”. Many of them even attempted to turn listeners into active participants and would let anyone broadcast on the show. This mini-FM movement was pivotal to radio culture in Japan and has never been thoroughly explored. Mini-FM did not last forever. It seems that it started to decline in the late 80s and fell off completely around the 90s.

PHOTOGRAPHY | ANDREAS WEINAND: COLOSSAL YOUTH

Between 1988 and 1990, the german photographer Andreas Weinand accompanied a group of young friends living in Essen, Germany, following their lives. The result was the photo project titled ‘Colossal Youth’. It struck us. Weinand documents youth in the simplest, ugliest and most beautiful of ways. What was most striking about this series of images is that there is not one style, or one specific thing Weinand focuses on. This makes his work less about proving a point or sharing a judgement and more about an open observation of the different aspects of teenage life. ‘Colossal Youth’ reminded us of growing up, and the range of emotions any teenager is subject to feeling. Passion, lust, rebellion, sadness, excitement, love, despair and lethargy are only a few on the wild spectrum of emotion that adolescents’ experience, which were documented perfectly in this book.

Co-founder of the labels Onda Records and GIM Records (he’s part of Groove In Mind duo together with Roberto Calamia), he counts collaborations with Kai Alcé, Vincent Floyd, Byron The Aquarius, Emanuele Inglese, The Mechanical Man, Raoul and others. His style is escapist, deeply cinematic, crafting soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, jazz, electronic, deep house and disco. Bencini’s passion for music knows no boundaries, whether on mix or behind the decks, he invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm. Roll a fat one, look at the sea and listen to this inspired forty-minutes tapestry of ambient, electro, world, soft rock and afro in a blissful, slow-motion fashion - dare we say, it’s so balearic.

PHOTOGRAPHY | PENNY VAN HAZELBERG: MASKS OF CRIME

In ancient tribes, masks are believed to embody spirits or ancestors, acting as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. They’re used in rituals to invoke these spirits and ask them for guidance, protection, or blessings. In many cultures, these masks are worn during ceremonies. They can symbolize important life events such as births, marriages, and deaths, helping to mark the transition between different stages of life. In the context of theft, masks are mainly used to conceal identity and create an intimidating presence, inspiring fear in victims and making them more compliant during the crime. Wearing a mask can have a psychological effect on the perpetrator, allowing them to feel bolder or more detached from their actions, which can make it easier to carry out the crime. The Australian artist Penny Van Hazelberg realized ‘Masks of Crime’, where he explores criminals’ different approaches to hiding their identities during robberies. This is a collection of photographs gleaned from the internet and the result is somewhere between an ode to robbery, a book for gangsters, and a scathing critique of capitalism. DOCUMENTARY | RMHC - 1989/1999 HARDCORE A ROMA

'RMHC - 1989/1999 Hardcore a Roma' directed by Giulio Squillacciotti tells the story behind the hardcore punk scene that grew and developed in Rome, between the end of the '80's and the end of the '90's. The movie clearly shows the spirit which animated those young people, who built a scene with almost no budget, endorsing a fully DIY attitude. Squillacciotti provides an amazing collection of video footage, flyers, fanzines, t-shirts and interviews with Inti Carboni, Chef Ragoo (Anti You), Robert? (Hellnation), il Perilli (Redemption), Paolo Petralia (Soa Records / So What? / Vegan Riot), bands like Growning Concern, Comrades, Student Zombie, Opposite Force and and many others. The key point is showing that even if hardcore punk was a social and musical concern, imported from another country (United States), those boys and girls were able to customize it, according to the local culture and transforming it in something very original and unique. Plonged in a low fi aesthetics, RMHC is a socio-anthropological research, focusing on the passion, the urgence, the lives and memories of those who experienced that era. It’s a true gem – don’t miss the chance to watch it.

PHOTOGRAPHY | TREVOR HUGHES: THE BIKE MESSENGERS 1992-1998

Trevor Hughes is a street photographer living in Toronto, Canada. These photos are a look back – way back to the years 1992-1998 when he worked as a bike messenger. He had an unique opportunity to document an intimate portrait of the bike messenger community in Toronto. His approach was minimalist: small compact waist bag (allowed quick access to camera), a Rollei 35 SE, Ilford HP5 film, B+W rubber lens hood. For 9 years the Rollei was his constant companion on the road while he was working as a messenger. Throughout the seasons and in all weather conditions the Rollei performed flawlessly. Trevor declared: "it was impossible for me when photographing not only to want to record but also to glamorize, romanticize, mythologize this tribe/subculture with their camaraderie, swagger and outsider attitude. I sought stillness, the intimate moments I could capture between the hectic dashes through city streets and traffic". Here's the 'golden age' of bike messengers. Before cycling cafes, before fixed gear bikes became the trademark of hipsters, before the word hipster even existed. Being a cycle courier was just another way of making a living, and not some kind of misguided fashion statement.

All Junglists: A London Someting Dis

'All Junglists: A London Someting Dis' is a documentary tracing the origins of drum & bass through jungle music that was first shown as part of Channel 4's Black Christmas season in 1994. With All Junglists you really feel like you’re capturing the energy of the jungle and rave scene in 1993-1994. There's a sense that something special is happening with the music, and with the communities around it. A great variety of people are featured from Mickey Finn, LTJ Bukem, Navigator and the Ragga Twinz to Paul Ibiza, and Paul and Kingsley from Roast. Issues around race and class are not skirted around. While it is acknowledged that jungle is bringing black and white communities together — “we are all under one roof raving, laughing and joking together,” Kenny Ken says in the documentary — it is also acknowledged that Black ravers are also being denied access to events. We learn what Congo Natty means when he asserts that “jungle is the ragamuffin of house”. A great introduction to what jungle was, and how it captured the hearts of the nation’s young in such a way that it caught the eye of the mainstream media. If you had to pick one documentary to represent the emergence of jungle, this would be it.

PHOTOGRAPHY | PARKOUR IN GAZA (2011-2013)

For a group of young Palestinians, the niche sport of parkour that emerged in France has served as an escape from the grim realities of Isreali occupation. This project by the 2024 Word Press Winner and Reuters photographer Mohammed Salem and Klau Thymann illustrated the rise of this discipline in Gaza’s Shati and Khan Yunis refugee camps from 2011-2013. For a sport that is literally about overcoming obstacles and living beyond imposed physical restraints, parkour has perhaps even greater resonance in the narrow, politically and militarily confined gaza strip. Abdullah Enshasy who cofounded gaza parkour team (Gaza PK), explains: “there’s a big relationship between parkour and barriers that we’re surrounded by in the gaza strip. Walls are everywhere. Parkour gives us a sense of freedom and allows us to endure these conditions without getting deeply depressed”. At first people didn’t accept us. they would say, ‘you jump like monkeys and you climb buildings like thieves’.” But as they explain, parkour is about breaking from conventional paths in life and finding your own.
