The Highlights for the Men’s Practice for me:
- Daniel Samohin looked better, hopefully the injury is fully healed.
- Alexei Bychenko looked good! He had a pretty solid run through.
- Nathan Chen just... wow. He looks incredible. For this point in the season, and everything going on, just... wow.
What do I need to do to make Daniel Samohin have a decent skate? I am not even asking for clean just for decent pls 🙏
Ok he was injured and only been back on ice for only 2 weeks, still this free skate and the short program too was....underwhelming....
Skate America 2020 Men’s LP Pt. 1
And now for the Men’s long programs. Will Vincent overtake Nathan? Will Nathan continue his undefeated streak? Let’s find out.
Daniel Samohin starts us off. He did not have a good short. He is a little shaky on his first combo, but pulls it off, only to fall on the triple axel. He looks nervous. I blame the giant Gieco lizard. I like his skating but I feel like he would do better with a coach like Brian Orser or Stephane Lambiel. And a better choreographer. He’s struggling. Not his best and he doesn’t look thrilled over it. That was funny. After he finished, he eyed the cutouts like ‘what do you want?’.
Jimmy Ma is next. Skating to Linkin Park, so a little closer to the Jimmy Ma that broke out. He landed his quad in his first combo but the second jump was a little messy. Same for the second quad. Second combo much cleaner. Second triple axel had a wild landing but he turned it into spins so yay. I think he was excited to land his quads. He’s another who I think could do better with a different coach. He’s got potential and wonderful musicality. A fall on one loop but comes back with a wonderfully clean combo. He’s doing well today. He comes alive with some really interesting footwork. What a nice performance for him! Well, minus a few errors. I think he’s happy with it. I like that, he waved to the camera for the real audience.
Joseph Kang is skating to a classic skating song, Danse Macabe. Haven’t head this one in a while. Oh, he flubbed that quad badly. He’s struggling with his jumps today. He just doesn’t seem into it. Perhaps, lack of experience. I see the potential in him but I’m really not feeling this program. Interesting spin positions though. He’s disappointed. Jimmy should move ahead of him and he does.
Camden Pulkinen is in a very purple shirt. I like it! A new program for him. He’s starting well. A very soft program for Camden. I’m enjoying it. It’s a good style for him. He doubled that combo though. Ooh that was a bad fall on the triple axel. Not the best he could have performed that I think but it’s a good program. I can see it getting the crowd involved if he performs it well, like Mariah’s Hallelujah program at Nationals. He’ll take first thanks to the component score and likely his short.
Maxim Naumov follows that. He doubles his first axel, and squeaks out the second in a combo. He’s a very fast spinner. I’m dizzy just watching him. Not sure about this music though. He’s got so much speed, I don’t know how he’s keeping it all under control. Well, besides the jumps. He’s kind of rushing those and making a lot mistakes. Interesting. He takes first. I imagine that’s thanks to his short program?
Ah, the kid is next. So little. Ilia Malinin is just so young but he’s competing welling with the big boys. And immediately starts with a lovely quad toeloop. He’s got the jumps and flexibility. That combo got a little wild there. And then comes back with a triple flip and double loop. The future of US men’s skating. He’s good. Needs some growing and maturity artistically wise but he reminds me of little Nathan. Very nice. He should be in first easily. Not bad at all for his senior international debut.
The second group is next!
