Souza talks, presenting his evidence and painting an unbelievable picture, and Jack is having a hard time matching this new information to the woman who saved his skin not two days ago, and listened to his story without judgement, and who, just last night, nearly drank him and the boys under the table at the pub, laughing the entire time.

There’s got to be a mistake, he thinks, frowning. “Are you sure about all of this?”

Both Souza and the chief look at him in surprise. “Since when did you turn into the Peggy Carter Defence Squad?” Chief asks, eyebrow raised in a way that has Jack’s hackles raising. ‘Your crush is showing,’ that look says, and it’s not fucking that.

Jack shrugs, looking back down at the spread of papers on the desk. “It just doesn’t sound like goody two shoes Carter, is all.” He knows she’s capable of it all, yes, has learned not to underestimate her while on their trip to the Russian border, but he doesn’t think she would do any of what Souza’s implying. Could, yes, but wouldn't, Jack's sure.

“Yes, well,” Souza says, eyes carefully blank. “Seems there’s more to her than we thought.”
